Well that's just it, I don't know, I'm trying to work out how varied the game world and roles really are. Sorry if I've come across as all tossy, by the way, I do appreciate everyone's patience and advice.

Are there not items people horde, or particularly sought after things that I could find and lead people to them? Or illegal trades, or secret routes, or anything like that? That's more the sort of thing I was thinking - tipping people off for a fee/favour, maybe tipping off favoured traders if a war was on the way, or something. I don't know, really, but I'd have hoped there'd be something that isn't just direct war/trade.

There are places that you need skills to find, however, you'll need to bookmark them, and then sell them, and people won't really want to buy bookmarks from an unknown person, due to the possibility of it landing them on top of a hostile space station filled full of guns. Which, by the way, is seriously funny.

Thinking about it, you could get into a cloaking ship and scout out the 0.0 alliance systems, and report what is at each moon (POS, Capital shipyard POS, Mining POS) and sell that information BUT alliances at war would have people doing that already for free.

What are the specs of the EvE server, out of interest?

IBM Blades, IIRC. Lots of them. Lots and lots of them.

There's something about "load balancing" and "Ramsan" but I don't understand that.

Brief google says this:

Quote:
# Stackless Python used for both server and client game logic. It allows programmers to reap the benefits of thread-based programming without the performance and complexity problems associated with conventional threads.
# SQL Server
# Blade servers with SSDs for high IOPS
# Plans to use Infiniband interconnects for low latency networking

Quote:
The EVE Cluster is broken into 3 distinct layers

* Proxy Blades - These are the public facing segment of the EVE Cluster - they are responsible for taking player connections and establishing player communication within the rest of the cluster.
* SOL Blades - These are the workhorses of Tranquility. The cluster is divided across 90 - 100 SOL blades which run 2 nodes each. A node is the primarily CPU intensive EVE server process running on one core. There are some SOL blades dedicated to one busy solar systems such as Jita, Motsu and Saila.
* Database Cluster - This is the persistence layer of EVE Online. The running nodes interact heavily with the Database, and of course pretty much everything to do with the game lives here. Thanks to Solid-state drives, the database is able to keep up with the enormous I/O load that Tranquility generates.

Dunno if that answers your question.

I tested those RAMSAN solid state disks a few years back. Dear God, they were quick. They were very proud of the EvE contract too -- they used it quite prominently in their advertising.

Cheers, Mali. Most interesting.

I've just realised what EvE stands for. I'm such an idiot.

It's worth pointing out that, uniquely amongst MMOs, the game has a single universe with all the players in. I can log in to EvE and meet anyone who plays the game, provided I'm willing to haul arse to go find them (and potentially cross dangerous areas). This is why it has a real working economy; you need a critical mass of people to make an economy turn, and most MMOs don't have enough people on each shard to support that.

Everyone v Everyone? Maybe it's not then. I just assumed because of the silly capitalisation.

Oh well, I thought it was a clever variation on PvP, PvE, etc.

Might be, but "EvE", "New Eden" sits nicely in my head, but you're probably on to something.

CCP always capitalise it "EVE Online" actually, although the official logo's V is slightly lower than the Es. I think "EvE" is a pun on Everyone vs Everyone, but it's not CCP's pun.

The background is: mankind starts to explore the universe and finds a natural wormhole that leads to a galaxy called New Eden. The wormhole collapses, leaving hundreds millions of colonists stranded on the other side. Millions die, lots of war and misery over limited resources, like habitable planets. Hundreds of years pass and the human races start to diverge into subtly different genotypes characterised as five big factions (sort of like nation states). EVE was the name of the wormhole gate they built that got them there. In the timeframe you play the game in, no-one in New Eden knows where Earth is, or if it still exists.

You can visit the Eve system in game and see the wormhole remains, although you get destroyed if you go too close. I always meant to get around to doing that.

I thought New Eden was the second garden of Eden, then it all goes to shit, like it did before, due to women, hence EvE. Like in the bible.

They must have been thinking that when they came up with the names, but that's not the official backstory.

Good call.

I maintain that everyone who is interested in gaming rather than just games should play EvE for a good chunk of time; a month or so. It's fascinating, intricate, cold, and hard to love. It can lay a stronger claim to being genuinely "unique" (an overused phrase!) than any other game I've ever played. I'm not sure I want to play it again, but I really enjoyed the time I spent with it.

I'm aware of the backstory, but the names fit in well with it, so it pleases me to think this, correct, or not. I'm into religious symbolism at the moment.

I agree. Although I am tempted to resub at some point in the future, seeing as my wireless net connection is stable now. When I've got time, that is.

It is a fascinating game, but I quit when I caught myself timing skills and logging on during work specifically to start training a new one. Down that road, madness lives.

I got around that problem by getting my boss into the game. At one point, me, my boss, and the intern were spending all day background mining in Indy ships, alt-tabbing every hour or so to dock and empty the hold.

Bumping AFK indy miners 200km away from the rock is funny if they don't have "keep at range" set.

Crikey, reading some of the stories here has reinforced my view that I've made the right choice.

I loved Frontier, X-Wing and X2: The Threat. I really want LucasArts to redo X-Wing and TIE Fighter for the XBLA.

Bumping an AFK Thorax 200km off a low sec gate and ganking it was funnier, though. Took bloody forever.

EvE intro movie seems to hold water with my neobiblical theory.

Amused me:

Person infiltrates high sec corporation in an alliance. Person then slips in a battleship and parks it between all of their mining barges which are happily chewing on asteroids. Person activates smartbombs.

Result? 24 ship kills, and 23 pods.

Quote:
I have fraps of it and an mp3 of their vent during the event. Also the CEO telling them to petition me for grief tactics. I'll slap something together tonight!

Then, the same corporation gets a war dec, and more kills ensue.

Some story here

Lovely, thanks.

I suppose I should mention why.

THE PLAN: I work out exactly how many of these ships I can afford. You deliver them either in bulk, or dropwise to Hevrice. Which is low sec, 1 jump from high sec, and I think it's in Verge Vendor, or Ishomilken, which is in Lonetrek, again a jump from high sec, or somewhere else wehre I used to live but I've forgotten where it is. On arriving in system I pay you for all the ships and a sum on top for your trouble. Then I spend 5 days trying to fight anything and everything in Hevrice, and make the system my own again. You can join in as well, if you want. And after the five days are up, I'll think about resubbing. It'll end in tears (theirs, hopefully, not mine/ours) and I can guarantee fights, excitement, rage and hopefully some killmails. And frozen corpses. it'll cost a fortune in ships, as I'll probably lose some, but I'm happy to pay others to BRING ME MOAR! it's be lvoely if someone could bring a cov ops and probe people out if they are in missions, as I can't do that. Then we can kill them.

I can't see that video, but I'm guessing it's something to with Amy Smart and Ashton Kutcher playing MMOs.

Just started this now. In training missions. Fancy learning slowly so if there's a thingummy I can join and just pootle about mining for the accumulation of space dimrills then cool.

Quite overwhelming menus so far and might be too micro-managey for me in the end, depends how much fiddling I have to do.
