I bet that sticker is a real comfort on a rainy night as the traffic police look down the side of his seat cusions for drugs and check his tyre tread depths are legal -- including the spare.

It's for cruising at a continuous speed on the motorway. If you're accelerating hard, often, you will need to change frequently to do so. But then if you're needing to accelerate hard and often on the motorway, you're probably doing it wrong.

Your spare doesn't have to be legal, they can't do you for it unless it's actually being used. It's not an MOT requirement either. source

I'd be more concerned about being done for section 5 of the public order and deceny act for having BAD SWEARS on your car.

Just emailed the VW garage about the spare key they want £150 for. Car only came with one key and salesman was most insistent they could only supply what came with the car.

Went on a VW forum and someone from another dealer said they are obliged to give me a second key by VW and to refer them to the "MPI sheet".

I await their response. £150 for spare, fuckers!

If you have a spare it has to be legal... or whats the point of having it?

Yeah, the only time I use 6th in my car is for motorway cruising. My car can reach it's top speed in 5th (er... so I'm told, officer!), 6th is just for keeping the engine revs down when cruising at speed. It's no good for accelerating in.

As much as I love my car (and I do love my car) I'm starting to think that it may be time to consider a vehicle with more than two doors, as getting Zioette into and out of my present car is starting to get old. My back, for instance, detests the whole procedure. But I don't want something shitty.

So how's about a 2nd hand, current gen Seat Leon Cupra? I've been looking on Auto Trader and I reckon if I save the pennies over the next six months one of them should be doable. They're basically slightly cheaper Golf GTI's right? With a slightly more powerfully tuned engine?

Blackpool Honda are fucking knobheads.

Got the call I was expecting about my car being ready but the bodyshop guy said sales dept put a halt on a couple of things; replacing a tyre with a slow punture and spraying a couple of blemishes off the rear bumper. So I had to speak to the sales dept AGAIN, this time to the chief, I explained the situation and stated these things were agreed to be done by no fewer than two members of the sales team so why were they stopped, and more importanly why didn't they tell me? Long story short(er) they're doing it and I have their courtesy car for an extra two days costing them more time and money.

Not budging a fucking inch on this.

Cunts.

It can legally be as flat and as bald as you like until you actually have to put it on the car.

Oh cocksticks - the alarm isn't activating now either. I'm wondering if I cut one wire too many while removing the handsfree kit, but I'm sure I've seen the red light come on since I did that.

Have the garage fucked it up, I wonder?

And is a combined thatcham cat 1 alarm/immobiliser/tracker available, I also wonder?

TOAD do good Cat1 alarms/immobilisers, and they're fairly modular so I'd be surprised if you can't add a tracker of some sort to it. I've got the TOAD Ai606 in mine.

I have about 24 hours to buy a car or things are going to get expensive. I've got £500 to spend on something that will be the first thing that Darryl drives so needs to be a low ins group, it needs to be 5 door for kiddy seats and work.

I've seen this, but don't know how wary I should be?

I got pulled up on mine when the Picasso went for MOT. I thought the point of a spare was just to get to a tyre place anyway, that's the point of those thin wheels and that foam you can put in tyres isn't it?

You want something with at least six months on it.

Tell your MOT man he's a cunt who should learn how to do his job. If you paid for a replacement, threaten to take him to court if he doesn't refund you.

Try and get something, as Grim... said with at least 6 months MOT and check the insurance groups as insurance for children is very expensive. Anything smaller than a 1.2 is good.

I didn't, I took it elsewhere, they failed it on loads of stuff that had all been sorted and checked in it's service a few weeks earlier. I only went there because it was a free MOT with my car ins, so I didn't really lose anything.

I'd avoid Fords of that vintage.

You should happily get a Corsa 1.2 ecotec 5 door in that price range, no older than 2000. Ms K has one and it's pretty bulletproof. Look for a red one, private sale, they fade to a horrible pink colour and sell for nothing, but T-cut up very nicely.

that type of thing: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... &logcode=p

(OK, not that one, but similar)

It's weird though, the remote locks and unlocks it, the indicators flash and the siren chirps. It's just that the LED on the console doesn't light.

Oh, and what components should I expect to be visible for the ultrasonics? I have the two microphone type things now. I cut off a small microphone from the reading lights on the A frame, but I'd convinced myself it was for the handsfree kit I was cutting out. It was fixed on by a bit of velcro and sticky.

It does sound like you might have snipped a wire then :S

Should just be the two matching microphone things.

Thank fuck; I was sure I had it right. I only cut that one wire, right up by the microphone, everything else was a plug onto the Ericsson handsfree unit - the alarm is the stock BMW one.

I'm pretty sure it was arming after I did that work and swapped the head unit (half the wires are still there as I've not gotten around to dropping the glove box yet) - I've only noticed this since the garage had it for a service last week.

Maybe the LED's broken? If they'd disconnected the battery or something, it would've forgotten the fob entirely, wouldn't it?

If I lock it with the fob then unlock it with the key, that should trigger it, right?

Should do yeah. If it's doing everything apart from switching on that little LED, I'd say that there's something wrong with the LED or the wire leading up to it. I doubt there's anything broken in the alarm itself.

Try it!
If that doesn't work try locking it with the window down a bit and then stick your arm in.

Remember to wait a few minutes after locking it, they don't always arm immediately.

Like you said you probably just dislodged the LED wire when you were messing with the car kit or whatever.

Unlocking boot with key: alarm sounds.
Unlocking driver's door with key: single sound, then another whenever the door is opened/closed. I did manage to make it go off when I closed the door, oddly.
Waving arm around through door or open window: nothing.

Fuck (I didn't leave it more than 30 seconds though).

A small victory won. The car only came with one key, the dealer said an extra would be £150 but I might be able to get a deal.

I mentioned this on a VW forum and someone who worked for a dealer told me that the car (as an approved used) was required by VW to come with a spare.

Contacted dealer and now I get the key for free. Shouldn't have to do this though!

Got my car back today, they've done a fine job on the paintwork. Looks mint. Parcel shelf and tyre sorted too. Still think I should write to the head office and tell them what a bunck of arseholes they have in the sales team but don't know if I can be arsed now.

Also: Honda Jazzseses don't like going around corners at 50+ mph.
