I'm fairly certain no one's going to kick down the door of my flat and rush in whether I'm having a wank or not. And if that does happen the wanking factor is probably the least of my worries.

I'm less convinced. I mean conceptually yeah; if you could offer some proper VR porn experience then it would shift units no doubt. But that's a massive technical challenge* so it's not as if people will actually have a load (or possible even any) of these apps to use as a basis for their adoption decision. The VHS/Betamax thing was different in that there were no real changes to the porn production process so it was just a case of near instantly being able to churn loads of content out on one platform and none on the other; an easy decision for the consumer there.

*By which I mean that developing anything even remotely decent in VR is presumably pretty challenging so to that and make it 'usefully titillating' is another degree of difficulty again which means you're not going to see a weight of such stuff any time soon, and certainly not soon enough IMHO to make any headset more attractive than any other in that regard.

Stop thinking apps and start thinking video. There's loads of people, in porn and normal video, figuring out the problem of recording 360 degree video for VR playback; so the video rolls as normal, but you can look around and get the same immersive experience that a VR game gives you.

Edit -- here's a, ahem, hands-on writeup of VR porn: http://arstechnica.co.uk/gadgets/2016/0 ... -liked-it/ (not technically NSFW but, well, y'know)

From what I've read, it's possible on cardboard to make it, with a certain know how with filming, extraordinarily realistic, so not exactly impossible.

As above, I imagine it will drive some VR uptake at the lower end. Quite whether this will cause an uptake of...ahem... high definition virtual tittilation is where it becomes of potential relevance. (but not to the ps4, natch)

You can play porn Blu-Rays on a PS4 and you can visit porn sites on a PS4's web browser.

VR will have to head towards common formats, if it's not going to die in a twisted maze of fragmented experiences; I imagine we'll see some standards emerge, and one of those standards will be for playback of streaming VR video, and the PS4 will most likely support that, and some of that content will definitely be porn.

Yeah, I'll admit I don't know how it works from the technical side, but I was expecting some kind of dedicated thing would be required which Sony would be hesitant to allow due to the entire view that it's still aimed towards kids.

Holodexxx is currently showing off their VR porn content and technology, and I was linked to an Indiegogo campaign the other day that was for a "Fleshlight" style controller that you thwap your dilznick into to "control the action" (or, thanks to it's inbuilt motors etc., allow the action to control you...)

It's going to be a huge market, much like every new technology it always seems to be porn at the cutting edge.

Well, I still think that simply adding 360 degrees to a standard fixed-camera porn video (which is what most of the current stuff seems to be) will be gimmicky shite that is unlikely to actually sell people on an ~£800 VR kit, but there's obviously more going on there than I thought so I suppose we'll see.

I agree that it isn't likely to impact sales significantly at that level, but if the porn industry gets behind (fnar) a specific product that might a) be the tipping point that selects one format over another, and b), depending on licensing, might bring the initial costs down for final customer for a single format, leading to more people buying it, leading to more people buying porn, leading to more films, leading to lower costs, lead...

I was part of an outreach thing at a primary school yesterday. My bit involved schlepping a beastly PC (Titan Black, aww yeah) with a Rift DK2 and giving the kids a go in RiftCoasterHD. They went absolutely mental, they loved it; we had moderate screaming, kids gripping the seat, kids nearly falling over, and one teacher with vertigo who tried it anyway and came away white and sweating. Three of them told me it was "well sick" which I believe is high praise indeed.

This sounds weird. http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2 ... -alt-space

Here’s where things get potentially uncomfortable. You can move in the world with a joypad or by pointing your head at an area of the map and instantly transporting there. If you’re using an HTC Vive you can move around by actually walking but it’s quicker to just direct your cursor and teleport. When people do that to you they pop up right into your vicinity, and it’s super intimidating. Some get really close and you can find yourself in the middle of a huddle. Although it’s not really your body, you feel your personal space being pressed and pushed at. The polite barriers we put up in ‘meatspace’ (as cyberpunk authors used to call the real world), don’t yet exist in the virtual space. I can’t imagine how different that experience will be for a woman, I just know that I found myself stepping away from other avatars on several occasions.

Yeah, there's a lot of discussion about the potential for bullying/harrassment in VR at the moment. I posted an article about it in the PS4 thread.

Review now up at Eurogamer, seems the hardware and software has really come together well, but I'm still not totally sold on it overall. The motion sickness problem sounds like it's really a thing too.

I think it's the kind of contraption I'd really like a mate to buy so I can go round and have a go, for myself though, maybe wait for the second-gen units - and even then I'd need to try one first to see if it agrees with me.

A friend of mine refers to this as "throwing yourself on the gadget grenade" ie. there's something cool but expensive, everyone wants to try it but no-one wants to buy it, eventually someone steps up and says "fine I guess it's my turn."
