There was an interesting article about the influence the golden ratio had on the design of Metro for WP7

Spotlight starts filtering once you type something, so you must know it's there in order to search. My mock-up's closer to some of the add-ons I used to have for the Mac, which listed all your apps and then enabled you to filter that list. (This is also how iTunes works in terms of search—everything within the selected container is displayed, but you can filter the list if you wish.)

Your mockup is exactly how it works on WP7, except that you have to hit a little search icon for the search box to appear. I'd post screenshots, but...er...yeah. Bloody patents.

Oh, I didn't realise you had to press the button to search. That's the same as Android ICS, then. That's a shame.
Does it order them alphabetically or by amount used? Amount used would be good.

The thing I'm annoyed about is the smaller charger socket. All of my chargers/expensive iPod dock rendered useless.

Says a tenuous rumour from a crummy site.

(I don't think it will be uUSB though. That would require a second jack for video out, and I can't see Apple doing that. I think there's a reasonable chance, maybe even a good one, that we're going to see a new, proprietary connector.)

Post subject:  Re: iPhone 5 rumour thread

I'm sure the Doc has made a case before for why they can never put a standard USB port on the thing. Well, they couldn't only put on there and would still need a proprietary dock connector of some kind. And given the premium of space inside modern devices like this I imagine they would just always go with a dock connector because it covers all their bases so you're eternally fucked for micro USB.

HTC do video out via the USB port - you need a special cable (USB to HDMI), but that's hardly a surprise.

Not just HTC, Samsung have had that MHL (almost) standard implemented in their phones since the Galaxy S II.

The HDMI adapter cable requires a separate power supply via a micro USB charging cable included to the compatible devices.

It's not the most elegant of solutions though.

It's a bit odd that is says that, I'm sure the Samsung devices with that capability don't need an extra power supply and the Wiki page for MHL even says "The HDTV provides power to the connected device." Is this HTC-implementation specific or just a not very well publicised downside to the whole concept?

Post subject:  Re: iPhone 5 rumour thread

I've never used one, but I was under the impression that the Samsung cables required external power as well.

Edit - I guess with the right cable, and a tv with a usb socket, you could power the cable from the tv?

No-one's ever used one, because no-one ever uses video out on their sodding telephone.

I thought the Wiki page was just saying that the power came from the TV down the cable but:

(a) that would mean the HDMI socket on a TV carried power which I can't see why it would and
(b) this review confirm that you need a separate power supply.

Either way, I really didn't think that through at all did I?

Author:  Joans [ Thu May 31, 2012 22:37 ]
Post subject:  Re: iPhone 5 rumour thread

That Wiki page only lists a handful of tvs as being compatible, so maybe they do supply power through the HDMI socket (or through some other means). I'm interested (maybe) to know what's different about the original Galaxy S that means it doesn't comply with the standard.

Is it not just that it doesn't have this functionality at all? My understanding was that Samsung only started putting it in their phones from the S II onwards. This article seems to support that.

Author:  Joans [ Thu May 31, 2012 22:50 ]
Post subject:  Re: iPhone 5 rumour thread

And the Galaxy S in front of me refutes it :p. Like I said though, I've never used it, although I'm pretty sure the option was always there, and when CM7 came out, enough people were moaning about the lack of TV-Out on XDA, but my understanding is that it works on CM9. Whether or not it's a proper MHL implementation, I have no idea, but from what I can see, there doesn't appear to be any difference in terms of how it works.

Edit - Maybe it's the lack of 1080p?

Edit again - Or I might be completely wrong and it doesn't do hdmi at all, but just does composite out from the headphone jack. I thought I'd seen hdmi cables available, but a quick search is a bit vague about compatibility.

I can send pictures / video to the TV from my phone anyway, as long as they're on the same network.

I was rather surprised about that, what with it being a Samsung TV and a non-Samsung phone, but there you are.

It'll just be using DLNA so any two certified devices can talk to each other and loads of devices and software use it; my Samsung phone will happily throw stuff to my Sony TV using it. I think it's even what Windows uses to share your media out with things like the PS3.

It looks the same... Only difference is that's a fully built model and the earlier leaks were just parts of the case.
