According to the laws of karma you should be a person who more happy things happen to, not all this rubbish stuff.
*sends positive wishes over internet*

When I had my card cloned/copied/I don't know, I had three transactions taking out a subscription to World of Warcraft in America. Barclays stopped the card, and sent me a form for me to sign to say I had been careful with my card, and not written my PIN code anywhere etc, and the money was back within a couple of weeks. Then another three transcations to World of Warcraft in France went out a week later because apparently they'd been authorised at the same time as the American ones, but took longer to show up. I closed the account, and moved banks, but I couldn't fault the people on the end of the line.

Just make sure you speak to the fraud department, not the customer services. They're pretty patient if you ring up more than once about the same issue I found.

It annoys me that it's referred to as fraud. Surely it's theft? Mimi has had over £200 taken from her - that's theft. The fact that the bank will recompense her, taking their sweet time about it, doesn't change that.

If I walk up to someone, grab their wallet and take £200, saying "I'll give this back to you. At some point in the near future. If you fill out these forms". Is that fraud?

It's both. It's fraud because someone pretended to be Mimi for financial gain, i.e. they used her card. All fraud is theft, not all theft is fraud.

I'm really sorry to hear that Mimi, you really do have the worst luck. :'(

I was fending off a school class invasion, so I only got chance to speed-read the first time and didn't quite absorb the misery of your situation. Sorry about that, it's going to take more than me naming a Pirate Queen after you to cheer up your week.

Other BETEO'ers here are better at giving advice than me, but I hope things get sorted soon and that the grudging response you got first time around was an unlucky stupidity in the customer service echelon. Here's hoping you get your money back soonish and get through this as painlessly as possible. :(

Love and hugs,

Pete

hehe, nooooo, I LOVE being the namesake of a pirate queen :smug:

Thanks for all of the help and understanding guys and girls, I will get back in touch with the bank. I will go into branch tomorrow and talk to them about it then phone up and speak to someone more understanding, hopefully.

I'm feeling a little better after a bit of a lie down and a sob. I bought a kokeshi doll last week to cheer myself up after being mugged, but it was in a secret box that you couldn't see into and I didn't open it in case I needed an emergency last minute gift for a female near Christmas time, but I decided that I could do with a gift to myself today. I just opened it up and it looks just like me. That cheered me up a lot. I think I might make an avatar out of it.

RE: fraud - actually, the guy on teh phone said that it wasn't fraud as they only use the term 'fraud' if they don't know where the money has gone to. Because we know that the money has gone to National Express it is not a case of fraud. To be honest I cared less about the technical terms and what they were going to do to help. That was the response to 'yes, but someone has fraudulently taken all of my money, and he tells me that. Thanks, that is really very helpful :S

Sheesh.

You'd expect a bank to understand what fraud is. How on earth are they going to have systems in place to prevent it if they don't know what it is?

It also makes me wonder how they can comply with their obligations under the Money Laundering regs...

Yes, indeed, it was the man from Nationwide that told me that.

i do not know the technical definition, but to my understanding someone has used my card fraudulently, the man from the bank said it was not technically fraud, but his technical definitions were not helping the situation so I just asked if and how I could go about getting my money back,

REPORT TO THE MONEY LAUNDERING REPORTING OFFICER!

A 20-point multiple choice annual test is the answer to complying with their obligations. One that you can retake as many times as you like until you pass. Oh, and the answer to every question is:

Jesus H. Really sorry to hear of all that Mimi (I've not had a lot of time recently to read a lot of the forum, but all this doesn't sound like much fun at all). A thought occurs - I don't think anyone here would begrudge you adding a tiny 'Paypal donate' link in your sig, so everyone can do a sort of cyber-whip-round. It's the sort of thing that would happen in non-internet (what's the correct term for everything that isn't the internet?) without the recipient knowing until they get given a card, but wouldn't work here (and you'd be forgiven right now for being wary of anyone saying "hey, what's your Paypal email address again? Why? No reason, erm, look over there"). It wouldn't necessarily cover everything lost, but enough to buy something shiny and at the same time act as a sort of Mimi's Faith In Human Nature Restoration Fund.

Just a thought, anyway.

That sounds very similar to our training. If they wanted people to take it more seriously they shouldn't have said that a complete defence to any of the offences was just to REPORT TO THE MONEY LAUNDERING REPORTING OFFICER. Accountants' firms apparently make something like 20 reports a day to SOCA, "just in case", like.

It's a nice thought Mark X, and thankyou, but it isn't necessary. I have borrowed some money from my nan (long term borrowed, as she won't accept it back in the future) and I'd find it hard to access my paypal accpunt at the moment even if that weren't the case, as my cards have all been cancelled due to the (it's not really called) fraud.

Either way I have some cash, I still have my train ticket back to Lancaster safe and sound, so I'll be back on my feet soon enough.

my cousn even bought around a box o food. Ever tried Heinz baked beans with sausages? TIP: don't. :smug:
