That doesn't sit well with my mind at all. My mind comprehends a d-pad by the orientation of my hands, not where the ground is; the x-axis is fine, but doing the same physical movement I'd do for UP on a regular d-pad moves the cursor DOWN.

Maybe my mind is in the wrong here, but if I was designing a controller, I'd never assume the user thought they were underneath it looking up.

what is amusing is that Bioshock took many months to be cracked and it sold shitload on the PC. How can you blame the developers when their DRM method worked so well?

Man you talk out of your arse. A lot of industry machines do not connect to the internet, so why would microsoft produce an OS that needs it. All OS must be able to operate on a standalone system.

edit: - where did you get all that twoddle from? Don't tell me you either made all that up or got it from wiki?

Go and buy GTA4 on the PC. Install it and play it without an internet connection. OOP ! you can't.

Try it with Crysis or any other recent game, too.

You'll find out what a DRM is and what it does. Oh, there's also no way to remove them, either. So, even after the game has been uninstalled and is long gone you still have that cunty thing sitting there watching what you're up to.

As for that 'twoddle' you will find it all very real.

What you don't know won't hurt? wrong. Do some poking around. Read documents released by the U.S govt and then come back to me and tell me I'm talking twoddle.

Far Cry 2. Less than an hour. GTA4, less than 24 hours.

$2m rockstar paid for it. Value, then.

Interesting. I've never thought about it -- it just felt right for me from the get-go. I imagine the usability labs testing for this was quite fun.

It's still DRM. I prefer just getting retail, but i hate this latest trend of having retail games forcing you to sign on steam. And they're $=€ thing is hateful.

Playing new third-party games and running Windows 7 are a long, long way from being the same thing. Why is the DRM that game publishers decide to use suddenly Microsoft's fault?

I don't think you can really chastise Microsoft and other companies for using DRM to protect their assets when you've admitted that you're a pirate on a public forum.

BioShock
Consumers have accused BioShock of installing a rootkit. An official announcement was made denying the use of any type of rootkit.[6][7]

The game required consumers to activate the game online and originally set a maximum of two activations before they would have to call to get more activations. This was raised to five activations because an incorrect phone number had been printed on the manual and call centers were only in the United States. Users also found that the game had to be activated for each user on the same machine.[8][9]

In 2008, 2K Games removed the activation limit, although users are still required to activate it online.[10]

JC.... I am calling you on the crap you wrote. Can you prove any of it?

I think I need some proof.

World in Conflict does not need access to the internet to play.
A lot of games don't as not every one has the the internet but plays games.

Win 98 never did need you to use MSN dial up at all.

Serously you have got a lot of facts muddled...

They're not using DRM to protect anything. Read up on it and you'll see why they're using it.

They lose hardly anything through piracy just like most other companies.

People who pirate games and play them wouldn't have bought them any way.

Note how in the 80s pop and rock stars did not lead the lives they live today? Yet piracy back then consisted of a few fucking tapes. These days it takes seconds to grab the latest track yet now they all have private jets and so on.

These companies still make mountains of cash, even with the piracy.

John, if all that stuff bothers you so much, wouldn't it be simpler, honestly, just to use a console? Then there's nothing to spy on in the first place, and if you're still paranoid about it, all the games will still work if you never plug it into the internet.

DRM is a name for any suite of products that seek to enforce copyright on software. It's existed since DOS - having to put in a license key for a piece of software is a form of DRM.

Securom is nothing to do with Microsoft whatsoever. Certain games to run on it may use Securom, but that's nothing to do with Microsoft.

i thought it was the other way around. Nowadays with the internet people are free to find the stuff they like, and there aren't any new bands selling loads of stuff like in the 80s. Everything is more distributed. Imagine how sad would be if Coldplay or Kings of Leon were as big as the Beatles were.

Unfortunately U2 are still big

How about some Securom?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Securom

Quote:

Fucking great.

So you are quoting wiki.. we all know how accurate that crap is...

So you're telling me if it was not true the companies would laugh and say "haha, let them slander and use defamation and we will leave it alone !"

Come on now....

Do some reading.

JC I work with in one of teh largest IT/IS companies in the world.

We have to know what the OS's will do, so we can make it fit clients requirements.

I am now starting the long climb up the solution architects route.

So I do read, and read a lot, but they are tech journals not wiki or any other rumor mill.

Quote me facts and I will belive you.

They're not using DRM to protect anything. Read up on it and you'll see why they're using it.

I'm not going to read up on it, I want you to tell me why they're using DRM, if not to protect their assets and stop casual pirates.

The continued usage of DRM by the vast majority (if not all) of software publishers suggests that it's meeting the goals they have set for it.

Your big rant was against Microsoft/Win7 though. Securom/DRM is nothing to do with Microsoft, other than the fact that some propriatory Microsoft AV formats support its use.

Win7 will use DRM and securom. The reason I said I wouldnt go near it.

And you know this how?

Because I read about it last night. And yes, I do consider things I read to be true or else Billy boy would start hurling around cease and desists like he is famous for.

You do know Bill Gates has retired right?

What do people have against Bill Gates? The man is one of the greatest philanthropists the world has ever known, he's been instrumental in bringing computing to where it is today, and he has a roman numeral after his name.

And if he had never had drawn breath, you'd have never been able to play with your precious Alienware.
