Hmmm..... The house we were looking at last year and couldn't come to a deal on, is still up for sale a year later.
I wonder how desperate they are to sell it now...

Similarly, there was a place in Haworth which might have been suitable last year, but now isn't, and it is £20k cheaper or so.

Reduce what your final offer was by 30% and start over...

Or buy the house over from me, it's only two and a bit hours to King's Cross from Shipley.

Today, My mental soundtrack as the big song from Frozen. Which isn't too bad, but it reminds me about 3 other songs, too, and i can't think what those ones are. I'm trying really hard, but my brain just won't let it go.

I think the main question to ask yourself is "why".

The European Court has upheld the full veil ban, although I don't undeerstand the reasoning on he BBC website. I would have thought it would have said the ban was too much, because it's really the state interferring with how people dress. and that's a bit uncomfrotable for me.

If they were asking people to remove their veils when going into shops it could be argued to be for security reasons and have parity with the helmet thing ( :hat: ) but if it's saying people can't wear them at all that's a very different thing. Especially given this statement:

Quote:
The Court was also able to understand the view that individuals might not wish to see, in places open to all, practices or attitudes which would fundamentally call into question the possibility of open interpersonal relationships, which, by virtue of an established consensus, formed an indispensable element of community life within the society in question.

That's just insane to me, that a court would comment on how people interacted with a community, or how someone's actions related to forming interpersonal relationships. How is any of that the business of a court?

You don't get fined for wearing a criminal fine for wearing a motorcycle helmet indoors.

You don't wear the veil for health and safety grounds.

You don't wear a motorcycle helmet because of your religion.

So, no, not really.

How can a veil impact driving, surely it interferes with peripheral vision?

Well actually you do. The French law applies to anything that covers the face.

Shocked it's been upheld though. It really is quite nastily aimed at people who wear them for religious reasons.

why would you wear a crash helmet for religious reasons?

Are you part of the church of Senna?

It's the final house in a new build estate that is the showroom, so it comes fully furnished with everything in it, which will put a lot of people off. Plus the price it is up at is a tad overpriced, hence we couldn't make a deal last time. It's a year later now, and it's a business rather than a private sale, so hopefully they will be a bit more bottom line about it all. We shall see.

I'd say regardless of your views on the EU, there are concerningly few things that the EU think that they don't have a right to comment on.

To summarise my views
- I want to stay in Europe, and have no real desire to renogotiate terms
- France shouldn't impose a Veil ban
- It shouldn't be any of the EUs business if France imposes a veil ban, and even if they uphold it, their reasoning seems to go even further over the line of their mission creep.

So, conflicted.

I'm conflicted over this:

One one hand, I don't think that the veil is a good thing at all for anyone; on the other, I don't want a state telling people what they can or can't wear. It causes me tremendous headaches.

The pedant in me resists the urge to note that this is a decision of the European Court of Human Rights, which is not an institution of the beloved EU.

Me? I think as the intent of this legislation is openly discriminatory, targetting a particular section of society, it's wrong.

Isn't it a <cough> blanket ban on any face covering though?

Well, yes, but off the top of my head are there any other groups that regularly do this? I think the intent of the rule is plain. Of cousre, France has a long history of secularism and anti-clericalism and this has to be viewed in this light.

As for full face coverings, I saw a couple of French exchange students on the High the other week wearing Kate Middleton masks. That creeped me out.

Is it true that some of the call for a ban has been lead by women who used to wear these, or was that just a fashionable thing that appeared in the papers a while back to make us feel better about ourselves?

I just recall some Muslim women saying that it was impossible for them to gain equality while being treated like property in that fashion.

There's a lot of recent historical misgivings over full-face coverings because of balaclava and ski masks worn by groups associated with terrorist activities.

I suppose Black and White Minstrel/Papa Lazarou impersonators could also be potentially included too, not to mention beauty product "face mask" users. Would sliced cucumbers over the eyes count?

I downloaded photoshop last night and it's the first time I've ever messed with a programme such as this. Years ago, I'd have been all over it and keen to learn but my advancing years mean that I just can't be bothered. It looks complicated.

I'm getting old.... Instead, I played Street Fighter IV online.

I'm still a big fan of PaintShop Pro... version 7.

I had a go on version 12 a few years ago, and it's now called something like Corel PaintShop 12.

I couldn't make it work.

I see Mimi using Photoshop though, and it's like wizardry.

Part three in particular might be a good starting point to show you how she gets her still life style photos.

Ah, happy memories of a never-ending 30-day trial of Paintshop Pro on Windows 95.
I use Paint.Net these days. Tried the GIMP a while back but the controls were horrid.

Something like Adobe Illustrator would be far better for that job. Again though, like any powerful software, it's quite complicated with a fairly steep learning curve.

All I want to do is design a Trivial Pursuit board on it but it involves a lot of cutting and pasting of characters. I thought it would be simple....

Cutting from one image and pasting it into another seems like a task too far for the latest image editing applications, I find. I usually give up after it fafs around with layers, and doesn't actually paste anything, or resizes it and doen't let you change it, or won't let you just paste onto a plain white background, you have to have some crazy invisible checkboard shit that you can't get rid of, etc...

I'm sure it is wonderful for the complex stuff, but simple shit like pasting craster's head on a fit naked woman is way too complicated these days.

Not a great day, out network suppliers have fucked up.

They had to configure one switch, have they done it right... no

I now have to talk to the site director to explain why they can't move 100 people today!
