also, surely aeroplanes have a better navigation system than a compass on the dashboard.

I'd like to experience the 'ping' moment. I wonder if it would affect you physically in any way, or if you'd just start walking into walls and such. Or, probably, nothing.

Acording to Wikipedia it can take between 1000 and 10,000 years to fully reverse. During which time all of human civilization will collapse into chaos.

I may be paraphrasing.

huh, what? But it hasn't happened since the time of planes, has it? Or do you mean it is happening now? But we are still settled on magnetic north, no?

Magnetic North and True North are different, and I'm fairly sure it changes over time.

How long does your head take to change polarity, DavPaz?

Yeah, I know that. There are three 'norths' all together, I think. I think it fluctuates a little, but I mean when the magnetic pole flips in polarity which only happens once in a ... Whatever (how often DOES it happen actually? Are we due?)

I'm unsure how I feel about the "Academic Spring" moement. This wants scientific papers to be shared freely over the internet. Whilst a noble and worthy goal, I don't think they recognise the costs involved. Papers need to be copy edited, peer reviewed, pageset and typeset, and this costs money and time. Journals need to be edited, and submissions looked at. The process also gets rid of papers that aren't very good for that specific journal. It's a lofty ambition, but not one terribly well thought out.

When you've accidentally glued enough fridge magnets to yourself.

With enough magnets, maybe you'll stick to someone else's fridge door instead.

Big Earthquake of coast of Indonesia:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ ... 00905e.php
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has just said a 17cm-tall wave was heading to Aceh (The Japan one was 30cm)
From BBC News

"A later alert said that sea level readings indicated a tsunami measuring 17cm (6.7 inches) was generated and that it "may already have been destructive along some coasts".

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told reports in the capital that there had been no tsunami reports so far, "but we remain vigilant".

"Our warning system is working well, and I have ordered the national relief team to fly immediately to Aceh to ensure the situation is under control and to take any necessary action," he said.

Bruce Presgrave of the USGS told the BBC that the quake was caused by the earth moving horizontally, rather than vertically, therefore had not displaced large volumes of water.

"We can't rule out the possibility, but horizontal motion is less likely to produce a destructive tsunami," he said."

Looks like it should be okay, but there is still a risk that it will get deeper as it goes toward land.

EDIT, there was an aftershock > than the original!!!

9.2* aftershock, FFS!

THIS BULLETIN IS ISSUED AS ADVICE TO GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. ONLY
NATIONAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO MAKE
DECISIONS REGARDING THE OFFICIAL STATE OF ALERT IN THEIR AREA AND
ANY ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN RESPONSE.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 0839Z 11 APR 2012
COORDINATES - 2.3 NORTH 93.1 EAST
LOCATION - OFF W COAST OF NORTHERN SUMATRA
MAGNITUDE - 8.7

MEASUREMENTS OR REPORTS OF TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY

LAT - LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
LON - LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)
TIME - TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

NOTE - DART MEASUREMENTS ARE FROM THE DEEP OCEAN AND THEY
ARE GENERALLY MUCH SMALLER THAN WOULD BE COASTAL
MEASUREMENTS AT SIMILAR LOCATIONS.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY
ALREADY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG SOME COASTS.

BASED ON THESE DATA THE THREAT CONTINUES FOR ALL COASTAL AREAS OF
THE INDIAN OCEAN. FOR THOSE AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES HAVE
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME
OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN
LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO
BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE
TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE
VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST
BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

Wow, if they start issuing warning for Yemen, South Africa and Australia all at once, you know something big has happened.

Yes, I heard on teh radio at about 9:30 that they had issued a warning. Hopefully it doesn't hit anywhere populated if it does form.

Hit us here about an hour ago. Was down to just a gentle swell by that time, but we're up in one of the high rooms, and we've had 30 people in our room for the last four hours trying to share towels (it's been absolutely tipping it down as well) and stuff because they evacuated most of the lower levels. No all-clear yet, but they've let most people go back to their rooms.

Zardoz was suggesting that we'd already discussed the (rather rubbish looking, IMO) zombie experience in the Zombie thread.

No all-clear yet, but they've let most people go back to their rooms.

It's not bad at all, out here at least - but they're not announcing the all-clear because of all the aftershocks, so they're still taking all the precautions.

No power, which is fun. 30 people in one room (although it's a fucking nice room) including half a dozen kids, in the mostly dark.

Not really sure what I'd claim for, frankly. Spent a few extra hours having a party in my room, with a load of very nice people. Including a couple of stunning chicks in bikinis who'd been evacuated straight off the beach.

You know there are other sites beside Beex, right? This isn't the whole Internet.

Amazing. That is surely compensation enough.

I'll bet it wasn't even the hotels idea, I can imagine Craster herding beautiful, half naked girls into his room for 'their own safety'. Not sure about the kids though, dude. Not cool.

Hope it all dies down soon and you stay safe :)

Rumours that the shocks were caused by the hotel's sewage system following a particularly decadent meal enjoyed by Craster have yet to be confirmed.

Whereas I dislike holidays, in the traditional "going away" sense. I'd rather sit at home.

I'd like to sit on a beach and read my book and drink cocktails from 11am until 3pm as our friends did when they were in Thailand last month.

EDIT: The last time I was out of Europe was when I went to Tunisia, and I didn't have a great time (was a bit ill, and realising that relationship proabbly wasn't going to last a long time). That was in 2004. Since then i've been to Ireland for a week, France for a week, and France for a long weekend with MrsA. Oh, and Bruge with the Afterthoughts and MrsA. Fucking Bruge.

I love being on holiday but really dislike all the faff at airports and stuff. The holiday we had the other week where we just set off in the car and drove for a whole day suited me fine.

I've done some awesome things on holiday, but I'm always far more knackered at the end than I am at the beginning. I don't find them "relaxing" at all. I'm just as happy sitting in the garden reading and drinking beer than doing the same thing on a far away beach.

I think if I sell MaliTowers (South) I'm going to use some of the money to go to the otherside of the world for at least 10 days. I might take MrsA, too.

EDIT: Typed as the outside went very black and the rain started hammering on the office window.

I'm much the same. I've not been away for a full week (I don't think) since I was a child and it doesn't bother me. I should probably at least use my passport once before it expires though.
