Torfaen, Wales: their new MP from 2010 is re-elected. Minor brag: I did research for one of his books.

Hello, de-lurking as I can't get to sleep, as per usual for an election night. Funnily enough for these things I usually lay grimly in bed awaiting the result in the morning, as I can't bear to watch - which has led to awful awakenings the last two years. Anyway, here I find myself in front of the monitor, red-eyed. I'm actually mainly watching the CNN commentary, American lass plus two Brits - quite an amusing combo with no show-boating and on-the-ball comments, punctuated by the American lady explaining the odd quirk of the British system thing to the American viewers. They just had a good interview with the Green Party leader.

Can't bring myself to comment as to future results any which way yet, though I did vote Labour, owing to absurd superstitions. I've known initial good news to fall apart as the night goes on before. But in the run up to this I was reckoning myself happy with Teresa May being humiliated and a repudiation of the Murdoch paper tactics, so I may still get that...

Aye, trembling in the upper body, adrenaline kicking in. Good job I work flexi at work. Still think Tories will win, but it's looking like only just, and a superbly embarrassed Tory party. Gotta add again, CNN coverage is pretty fun!

The Tories are still likely to come out first. I just worry that they'll do some dodgy agreements with unionist parties in Northern Ireland that put back progress on peace.

Cavey, I love you and profer a big manly hug.

I'm not a Corbynite but I'm definitely centre-left and was appalled by the Tory government of late, so I'm a happy bunny so far. I can't say that Corbyn is a great thing for Britain (and I very much doubt he's going to win) but this result thus far at the very least restores my faith that the abominable Murdoch papers can't dictate to the British public.

I wonder if May will resign.

This was about as good an outcome as we could have hoped for.

Imagine how well Labour would have done if large numbers of their MPs hadn't tried to sabotage Corbyn from the start.

Not to be, sadly. WEP polled 1k votes. I hope she stays around.

Pragmatically, I'd trade that for the current overally position.

This is the first time since my teens that I can remember sleeping through election night. Woke up a couple of times but didn't check phone so feeling very good!

Locally our constituency increased its Labour majority by 10%

Just got up in the last half hour, nice cup of Yorkshire Tea on the go.

So, so happy. I lived in Brighton in 2010, and now in Canterbury. The latter swinging to Labour is a huge and joyful result. And may be an example of a further a May miscalculation/incompetence, if enough students registered round here to make a difference. Labour only took it by 187 votes.

Also it's a bank holiday here today (Senior TT Race Day) so I get to watch Tories looking sad on telly all day, which is far better than my original prediction that I'd have to watch them be smarmy fuckers all day.

One of our WhatsApp groups had a little sweepstake on the results and none of us called a hung parliament, it was just a case of how big or small the Tory majority would be.

I think this might herald the start of a genuine new Labour movement in the UK, crucially, with the engagement of young people.

EDIT - Just took Mrs H a cup of tea as I could hear movement upstairs, she asked what happened, I told her the Conservatives had lost their majority and she a did a proper fist in the air with a cheer :) Hearthly Jnr asked who the Conservatives are and I replied 'They're the ones we don't like'.

Labour are a shambles of a party who have proven time and again they can't control things financially; Corbyn is blinded by idealism and has only the dregs of a party at his disposal. I wouldn't trust them to run a school fete, never mind the country and I still voted for them over the Tories!

So there you go. Your vote DOES make a difference!

I think that'd be fantastic, he could properly sink the Tories IMO, a thoroughly nasty piece of work and any sort of election campaign would reveal him for what he is, same as happened with May.

Corbyn is in the ascendancy now and he'll have his party behind him (as should have been the case all along, but anyway....), he thrives on campaigning and I really fancy his chances against Johnson, who resorts to bluster and bullying when put under any sort of genuine pressure.
