Oh, yeah, apparently it has context sensitive adverts. I've never really noticed them.

Christ, I have, yes. 10 October, wasn't it?

It was, but I likely can't make that date now.
Nov 7th and Dec 5th are the next ones - I should be able to make either, but that would depend on Ma looking after the Grimlet / where the wedding on the 4th is.

Also, you use AOL, so I suspect you'll try and steer with your teeth, or something.

Tell you what, I'll set up a gmail account tonight, and email you from that.

I'll check the diary, but 5 December is probably out as 4th is my birthday, and I will be hungover.

Not that I'm knocking Gmail you understand. I think it's ace, especially on the Desire.. Oh, apart from not being able to save attachements that aren't Jpegs.

We've done this before, and you're still wrong. People thought it was shit when it started because it was just a webmail, overhyped, and it worked a bit different to everything else. But it's always had the majority of the key features which make it worth using, i.e. the search and the intelligent threading.

Mad Bollywood sci-fi movie trailer. Looks awesome.

You've pretty much seen everything by 1.30 in as it just then shows three 15 sec clips recycling footage already shown.

How does this happen?

You mislay your iPod, but you know it is in your handbag. Your handbag measures about 12x8" (roughly) and has one main compartment plus a flimsy mobile phone packet which is too small for the iPod. In your handbag is a pair of mittens and some mints. Nothing else. you are sure of this because you have looked through and emptied out your handbag FOUR TIMES.

This has happened before, though, and you know that in 5 hours when you think of it again you will open your handbag and it will be there, gleaming away.

5 hours later...

Open bag and there it is, plain to see. You COULD NOT miss it.

How does this happen?

I've never even used an RSS aggregator.

Clicking on the label on the left, or on 'all mail' would have found it again.

Being married immediately gives your wife half of everything or something, regardless of whats in the will?
And what does common law wife mean? Cohabiting but not legally wed? What does that allow them to claim?

My very first account was with Compuserve and was crap. You couldn't choose your own account name so I was known as something like [email protected]. Not very helpful, and browsing was akin to AOL, so I ditched it before the free trial was over. I had a CCTA (Government) account for a while, which I thought gave me a bit of nerdy kudos.

Then I had a Freeserve address for a few years, until they got bought out and started screwing around at which point I ditched it. By then I'd also got my first web based mail via Yahoo and despite it being a bit clunky to begin with, I've used it ever since. I think they pulled their socks up when Gmail scared them by entering the market and they removed the mailbox size limits. Their major upgrade to the current version looked nice, but ran like snail, so I reverted to the original until performance improved. Also got a Gmail account which keep as for contingencies, but I'm quite happy with Yahoo so I just get my Gmail stuff forwarded there.

Oddly, our infrastructure consultant, who's knowledge of things IT seems to know no bounds, has always used an AOL address, but then he doesn't give two tuppeny turds what anyone thinks about that.

He means that the "common law wife" thing that a lot of people seem to believe in is a myth - doesn't exist, no such concept. People often think that if you're cohabiting you're a "common law wife" and so have the same rights as a married couple. tis not true.

Internets. I had:
A university of Aberdeen SLIP dialup that was meant for staff use. I first used that with a 2400 baud modem.

Then: Enterprise.net. A cheap-o operation based on the isle of wight or somewhere. Can't believe it cost something like £12 a month PLUS you had to pay for the calls! 14.4 Supra modem FTW.

Then: freeserve (0800) for years until it went shit, and then something else I can't remember until I finally got ADSL in 2005 or so.

Say I am married to MrsA, and I don't have a will. The assets we own are: a house in both our names, £50,000 cash in a joint account, I have £30,000 Shares and a car.

I die and there are 5 years of national mourning. The myth is that MrsA gets the lot. In fact she'd only get the house and the cash in the joint account. The shares and the car will pass upon intestacy which means she would only get as much as the intestacy rules allow and the other stuff goes to others.

OK I understand. But if you DID have a will and said "if I die I want my car and shares to pass to my wife" then she would get the lot?

Say I wanted to play Minecraft at work and say the network won't allow me to...

Say I wanted to set up an SSH tunnel to home to let me do this...

A) Would it work?

B) How do I do it? :)

Has the amount gone up, then? I could have sworn it used to be the first 150k.

1) Install "Putty" ssh telnet program on your work machine. Set up tunneling in the prefs for the port that minecraft uses, i.e. 127.0.0.1:3333 or whatever it is.

2) Log in to your home machine.

3) don't do this.

Yeah after piking my friend's Nildram account for a while I also went with Compuserve. They were horrific. Ditched them before the trial was up, then briefly toyed with MSN. They were also horrific, just slightly less so, so I ditched them also before the trial was up and went back to stealing my friend's Nildram account until Freeserve came about.

We stayed on the 0800 Freeserve account for a while before my father got us an NTL phone line and associated dial-up internet account. As broadband became popular, we went to NTL's cable broadband service. This eventually became Virgin Media. My father eventually got sick of them, so had a BT phone line installed and I got him an account with O2 for broadband. He seems happy enough with that.

BT's phone lines are beyond awful where I live with my girlfriend and the best speed prediction I could get was with Sky broadband, who reckoned I could get a maximum 1.5Mbps connection. So we're on Virgin Media as their cable service nets us a 20Mbps connection. Their customer service appears to remain shocking, however.

Any network that actually allows outbound ssh tunnelling while attempting to enforce security rules like website blocking is a silly network.

How would it know, if it's over port 80?

If no children, then spouse gets first £450,000 my personal possessions and half the rest, the other half goes to parents or, sisters, brothers of the whole blood, then nephews and nieces.

Has the amount gone up, then? I could have sworn it used to be the first 150k.

Depends on if you have kids or not. Having kids drops it to first £250,000 I'll go and get "THE BOOK" but i'm 99.99999% sure I'm correct.

Heh, we briefly used that at a previous employer to bypass a client's firewall protection and grant us access to their network, until they specifically blocked it. Presumably they never worked out who was doing this as they continued to renew their contract with us.

To be fair though, it was being done to access our assets through one of our servers that the client's IS security team were being deliberately awkward over.

Er - well it isn't over port 80 if you're using Putty.

Only if the target machine has a telnet server running on that port, is the point.

We have an Openreach employee down the road, who got fed up with the slow speeds recently at his end of the line (a long way from the junction box doohicky) and he did something to the line that's sped it up considerably for everyone. Hoorays!
