Heh, I just texted a friend who is a solicitor "What if I sleep with you, can I have a training contract?". She replied "What about your girlfriend?" so I replied "It's OK, she's staying in publishing"

Heh.

Note, also, that she did not immediately say no. Invitation to treat.

She does family law. in my book, women doing family law are to be treated the same as women who own more than 2 cats.

It was. I've stopped reading it now, as I think I've got it, it was obviously a mistake and sumamt to do with it not being a contract as some dude once wrote, when talking about the price of hare pelts "X per pelt" rather than "X per pound", the person noticing this, and making about 3 times as much money as he would of done, then the court making him pay it back.

EDIT: Or somesuch. I'm a little tired this afternoon after beers last night. And probably am wrong.

That's fucking awesome because I'm one of the people who got that camera. I still have it. I got Trading Standards involved and everything; I did a longish phone call with them whilst driving to DBSnappa's house.

In which case, I really should read back over it all.

100 quid, wasn't it?

Camera was RRPd at £330, priced for £100. The case for them having to sell it revolved around the fact that, firstly, it was not a totally obvious misprice (Argos once sold some £299 TVs for £2.99; people sued to get the TV at that price; the case was thrown out because it was obvious to anyone that this was a misprint and therefore any offer to buy the TVs was in bad faith). On the other hand, this was an older model in a discounted end of line deal, and £330 was the original RRP, so it's not unbelievable that it could be £100, particularly sold direct from the manufacturer. Certainly I genuinely didn't think it was a misprice -- I just thought it was a storming deal.

Secondly the confirmation email I got from Kodak seconds after buying it (I probably still have this in my old email archive) simply said "here is your receipt" and did not, say, "here is the confirmation of your order" like they do normally. Hence, the argument went, the deal is already done at that point and the contract made. There is a precedent here involving some multi storey car park's automated barriers being able to make contracts, just like Kodak's website did. Someone vs NCP I think.

Last day in the flat tomorrow...well actually I have been at Gaz's all week-but still technically the last day. I shall salute this by maybe drinking my body-weight in alcohol tomorrow and holing myself in the flat until they come for me with pitch forks and torches...

Tanya, fancy a glass of coke? :D

God I was so worried that place was going to be uber posh last night, a poor owd mucka like me can't go into those places. But once over the threshold I am vampire-like and may go again...actually...4.50 FOR A GLASS OF WINE?! Bloody 'ell! You were right, I could have had a bottle of it for that :( I'd prefer to go to my local and have a knees up and then sleep in the corner with a blanket on me like when I used to go out *sigh* good times, good times

Ahoy! There are plenty of video tutorials online when you sign up for an adwords account with google.

All of the books, like you say are much of a muchness. I have pretty much every book on the subject on my desk at work (fortunately I didn't have to buy them myself) and they're all the same. Just get one that seems to give you a good overview of the subject. The first one I read was Google Adwords Guerilla Tactics, and after that all of the rest were telling me the same things. It's not necessarily a great book, but it's as good as the rest.

The best way to learn, though, is by setting up an account and creating an ad. Start small with a few quid budget a day and tweak things to see what happens. If you need any help give me a pm and I'll be happy to talk to you about it! Before long you'll be spending thousands of pounds a day on silly clicks :) Maybe.

Despite having a PS3, XBox 360 (with HD-DVD), PS2 and fuck-off laptop all plugged into my tv, I'm lacking the means to play Region 1 DVDs on any of them, so ordered a cheap'n'cheerful multi-region DVD player from them: http://www.datakits.co.uk/store/dansai- ... anguage=en

On the same day, I get an email saying:
Quote:
Your order has been dispatched

We send all items via Royal Mail Recorded Delivery or Parcel Force.
Please allow up to 5 days before following up this order.
Your order should arrive no later that this time.

Ten days later, no sign of it, so I email them to ask when I can expect to get it, and get this automated reply:
Quote:
Sorry for any delay in receiving your order. we will check the status and follow up the delivery company straight away. Thanks DataKits.co.uk ---------------------------------------------------

A couple of days later, still nothing, so I phone them. The number on their site only gives you an answerphone (they more-or-less admit this on the site) and says they'll get back to you in 48 hours. They didn't.

More emails follow, and eventually, five days after I first emailed, I get this:
Quote:
Hi I am sorry we sent this with royal mail to you at:

[my name and address]

Is this correct please as I am trying to locate it with them now

Regards
Mike

I reply that that is correct.

Another five days pass without hearing anything. I decide to log into their site to check and see my order status says "Paypal Awaiting Payment". This is most odd, because I paid at the time, with a debit card. So I email Mike, questioning this and get this reply.

Quote:
Hi yes it was sent. I have located it with royal mail. You should have this tomorrow. Sorry for the delay

Regards

Mike

No mention of the paypal business then, but I thought I'll wait and see. Sure enough, on Tuesday morning, it arrived. The box was falling to bits, which wasn't a great sign, but I figured at least I had the DVD player, finally.

Now, being quite busy lately (working late shifts and trying to organise a wedding), I haven't actually had time to have a proper look at it until today, when I plugged it in. There was no obvious documentation about how to make it region free, so I thought maybe it's region-free out-of-the-box. Testing a disc soon made me realise how hopelessly optimistic I'd been. So I thought I'd check the Datakits website, in case they had any info on there about it, given they were selling it as region-free.

It was at this point I realised what they had sent me was a totally different player to that I'd ordered. They'd sent me one of these: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134603 (but in silver). If there's a way to make this one region free, Google doesn't want to tell me about it.

What a shower of shit!

Wow dude.

That reminds me of my first DVD player. A relative had left me a few hundred quid in his will, so I went to the nearest Costco and bought myself a DVD player. They had pretty much only just come out over here at that point, and there was seemingly a grand total of about 5 Region 2 DVDs available to buy. Someone recommended to me that I send the player to a company call Techtronics (IIRC) to get it chipped. I checked them out and they seemed good, if a little pricey (I think it was about £80 to get it done).

In the finish, it took four months, many emails and phone calls (including at one point finding it had been worryingly put in the 'to be scrapped' pile of players they had there) to get the bloody thing back and when it did I found that, miraculously, none of the buttons on the actual machine worked anymore and you had to use the remote for everything and it could no longer output an RGB signal, leaving you with a crappy composite or S-VHS one instead. But at least it was multi-region. Arseholes.

The car is booked in for its two yearly-or-85k-whichever-comes-first on Monday. I'm rather astounded to have gotten in so quickly, given I only booked it this afternoon. Perhaps this time they can fix the faulty light switch in the rear and give me the paint touch-up stick I ordered two years ago.

Loads of people complained about Techtronics service, but I bought my first DVD player from them back in 2001 for the princely sum of £180. It was a Pioneer DV-340 and it was multi-region, with Macrovision unlocking and all those gubbins.

I didn't have a single problem with it and it still worked just as well as the day I bought it when I gave it to a friend earlier this year because I couldn't be arsed to have another box under the TV when the 360 would play 98% of my DVDs fine.

My first DVD player was carefully selected to be software hackable - the Samsung 709. Bought it in, oh, I dunno, 2001 maybe? For £150 from the Brigend shopping outlet. The same day I bought a couple of early DVDs; The Big Lebowski, The Right Stuff, a few others. I still have all those discs. I've never watched that copy of The Right Stuff!

Blimey. I remember the Samsung 709, spoken of in hushed, venerated tones on the dvdforums. My first was a Scan SC2000, with the replacement chip that took off macrovision. I never taped a single DVD though.

I bought mine in Best Buy for a couple of hundred bucks in October 99 or so. It was a Philips. Got Starship Troopers, Scream and Austin Powers with it, but Starship Troopers wouldn't play so I went back and swapped it for To Kill A Mockingbird.

Yeah, it was pretty famous. It was a compelling combination of cheap, software region-free, and very good quality.

I think that might have been the player that broke the snobs. I remember when "anyone paying les than £300 for a DVD player is a moron who doesn't care about films and should stick to VHS."

I don't think I've ever bought a standalone DVD player. I've got a PC, then I had various consoles.

I did buy a standalone HD-DVD player though.

I'm sure he'll bring you a bucket of fish heads every couple of days.

Somebody was just rickrolled to death on the Weakest Link.

How? Have they changed the meaning of the "link" to mean web-link?

Nah, it went all the way to a tiebreak, and the last question was something like "Which Rick Astley single previous released on the album 'Whenever I Need Somebody' was a worldwide number one hit in 1987?".

Cue everyone in the living room pointing at the screen at once yelling 'Never Gonna Give You Up!'*, and then breaking into song.

The guy got it wrong and lost the £3,200.

* Yes, yes, it's not a rickroll if it's actually in context. Shush.
