Since I've been working here (2005) we've been encouraged to claim back any holidays that are also sick days.

I don't think many people do mind.

I thought 'claim back holidays you would've stayed off work' had been normal for years and years.

I should be able to claim back two of three weeks of this holiday :( I won't though.

Weird, i've never heard of this before, or ever thought to claim any holiday back as sick. Is it just me who thinks that doesn't feel morally right somehow?

Yesterday came close, but I powered through.

All those companies do is ask you for the information to fill in the same form that you can fill in yourself, and then take a percentage of whatever you get back.

Similarly, if ever you have to make a claim to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority because you've been a victim of crime, you can do all the paperwork yourself - again, it's only a form to fill in. You don't need a solicitor or claims management company to do that for you and then take 25% of any compensation. The only reason to use one of these places is if you are incapable of filling in the form and can't get a friend or family member to do it with you.

Proactive employers taking reasonable approaches on a case by case basis differs somewhat from a clear legislative statement though. A significant concern is that if this takes hold 'culturally', then firms will revisit their sickness policies down to the bare statutory minimum to prevent pisstaking.

APoD was talking about people doubling their entitlement by taking holiday days and then claiming them as sick days instead. That strongly suggests that they're claiming they were sick when they weren't - and in that case you'd be getting a free day off whether you pulled a sickie on a working day or claimed back a holiday.

Unless it's different from the normal process for having a sick day, you can self-certify if it's 5 days or under.

I'm fairly sure that if you're sick whilst on holiday it doesn't count as holiday and has done for some time.

Thing is, people don't want the Union Jack. When you see someone who's paid to have the extra flag on their licence plates, what have they got? The English, Scottish or Welsh flag. Hardly ever see the Union Jack.

It is only the Union Jack when on a ship, rest of the time it is a Union Flag...

I had a long weekend booked in Ireland during the two months I was off sick last year with the PE. My employer automatically gave me the annual leave back, which I wasn't expecting (and was very pleased about). Maybe this hasn't been law, before, but merely a common practice?

ECJ ruled on this in 2009, under the Working Time Directive. And even as far back as 2000.

I've woken up this morning with what feels like a 10 pint hangover. Which is strange. I think I'm just overtired, or something.

EDIT: And I didn't put a belt on today. And come out with no cash on me. Apart from 60p which i've already used to buy a tin of coke. Still, at least it is payday. All I've to do is pick up MrsA's train tickets so she can fuck off down south for the weekend, whilst I attend a party on Saturday night.

EDIT 2: I also seem to have come to work dressed as a shit country and western singer. Cock.

I've never thought to claim back holiday if I've been ill. In some circumstances it would seem right, but not in others. So if it stopped me going away or similar then fine, but if I was away for a week and was horribly ill on one day midweek then I wouldn't claim it back.

It's very nice of people to invite me to house warming parties in Essex, but it's a fucking long way for me to go. Also, if I had £7,250 to spend on a car, it wouldn't be a second hand Vauxhall Agila. I sponsored someone £5 to do the Yorkshire 3 peaks as it is going to lamp it down tomorrow. I'll throw in another tenner if they do it in under 11 hours.

You know I said that I thought people could take the piss? We've just had our first claim to reinstatement of leave. From a partner.

Partners are not employees, and hence have no statutory entitlement to reinstate.

As the next stage in my plan to get myself on some sort of Government Watch List, I had a go at longsword fighting classes on Wednesday. It was good fun, and a bit more "real" than the kendo I've done before - one of the techniques demonstrated involved kicking the other guy in the 'nads, and apparently there is plenty of pommel-to-the-face, thumb-to-the-eye type stuff to be learned. We used Nylon swords that are apparently fairly close in balance and weight to the real things, but allow you to go fairly hammer-and-tongs at each other without the risk of much more than bruising. Good fun and I heartily recommend it if you don't mind being surrounded by Goths and Nerds for a couple of hours of an evening.

Tried to weed the front garden. The rain didn't help, but managed to get most of it. Then, given my council green waste bag was only half full, did the path down the side. The whole thing was covered in a carpet of thin, interwoven vines which I likewise ripped up like a carpet and stuffed into the bag. Path is now more or less passable!

My hand has turned green from the wet fabric of my gloves!

My wrist is now coming out in a red rash from the holly and thorny vines I was snagging myself on!

I have a can of beer at 2pm! Because I'm DONE FOR THE DAY.
