I quite liked Waterworld as well - in so far as it wasn't terrible.

It was quite passable - it got very bad reviews, and I think most of the slating was as a result of the ill-fated filming and the consequent ridiculous costs.

Technically, perhaps. ;)

It was OK, in a channel 5, Sunday evening sort of way. I will never watch Slumdog milionaire, as it doesn't have guns, explosions, spacechips or big swords in it. I'm becoming very conservative in my film-watching habits as I get older.

Heh.

And anyway, we've all been a sucker for at least one notionally bad film.

Yes, Hollywood historically is littered with films that other studios start dissing from the get go and sometimes they succeed. I remember the furore over the filming of Waterworld. Similar things were done to the Last Action Hero, which again wasn't anywhere near as bad as the press made out. Or Hudson Hawk for that matter.

Slumdog is nothing like I imagined it would be - it's in turns brutal, blackly humourous and quite harrowing. It is NOT a romantic comedy like all the marketing and reviews would have you believe. It also ISN'T the best film of last year or 2008 for that matter.

No, he's eminiently sensible for hating the second two PotC films. He's Mr. Daft for hating the first one.

Kermode's quite often wrong, but at least he's usually wrong in interesting ways - he doesn't like Gandhi or The Big Lebowski but loved High School Musical 3 and Basic Instinct 2, f'rinstance.

My favourite thing about the POTC films:

Refering to them as "Pirates of the cah-rib-ian" not "car-ah-bian".

It well confuses folk.

Don't you mean referring to them as "Pirates of the cah-rib-ian" not "ca-ra-bian"?

Why for now you what?
I didn't say it wasn't a great film, just that I don't think it's the best film of last year. Personally, my favourite film I watched last year would be, hmmm, probably Let The Right One In, off the top of my head.

I thought it was merely ok and couldn't understand why it was so popular. I've only seen it the once though so maybe it'll benefit from a repeat viewing.

A serious man is a bit of an ache.

Like, it is kind of painful to watch. It's just about a bloke that seems to be actually a fairly sound bloke, and then everything in his life just turns to shit.

Some pretty funny situations too:-

I watched the PotC moveis last week - 3 is much worse than 2. 3 is utterly incomprehensible. By the halfway point, it was quite clear to me that I no longer had the faintest idea what was going on anymore, who was on what side, who was doing what and why they were meant to be doing it. It's also boring, whereas the first one was excellent. It's not quite as bad as the whole Matrix debacle, where the sequels were so bad they seemed to actually tear the space-time continuum around them, sending their shitness backwards in time so that even the original seems rubbish now, but still.

I'm hoping I might get to go and see Avatar tonight.

I liked the fact that Sherlock Holmes wasn't an origins story. I don't know why, I just expected it to be so was pleasantly surprised it wasn't. Saves more time for an actual story about these characters everyone knows about already. I also liked the general style of the movie with the hint of steam punk to it.

Just a shame the mystery being solved was pants.

How the hell can they spin out such a small (and brilliant) story into a film?

In the film, Max is a workaholic cop with a rocky relationship with his ex-wife, whilst the Wild Things are a bunch of double-crossing scam artists trying to make that one final big score, leading to a climatic shoot out on an out-of-control oil tanker heading straight for New York!

I maintain that Barbossa is by far the best thing in any of the POTC movies, including the second one.

Also, I finally saw Avatar last night and thought it was utterly spectacular. And there was me thinking it was going to be shit. Loved it, definite future BluRay purchase methinks.

Watched a bad film yesterday with some friends. Thar be spoilers here, but it doesn't matter, because it's almost completely shit:

It's set in Birkenhead in 1979 and follows this young nineteen year old man who's got a real nark on about something. I think it's because his mum's died of something, or because he feels stifled in his middle class life, I'm not sure. He's trying to get into art college and is quite clever, but is desperate to get in with a set of football hooligans who deliberately set out to fight battles with rival gangs, armed with stanley knives. The hooligans all walk around in green cagoules and Addidas trainers, and are led by sheepskin wearing scary fatherly figure bloke who played Combo in This is England. Elvis, a more refined yob keen on poetry and Joy Division, Lou Reed and spouting art school guff - exactly like the young protagonist - takes a shine to him and despite initially advising against joining up shows him a way into the group. Then starts a cycle of violence, shagging, staring, dancing to bits of Joy Division, shouting at each other in borderline impenetrable scouse, staring, violence, shagging, staring, staring, staring, dancing, violence, staring, shagging, shagging, staring, tiny bit more violence, staring, staring, staring oh no one of the gang's gone nuts and stabbed and killed Combo, he's the leader now and my sis has been beaten up by rugby blokes we'll avenge her and it looks like Elvis is in love with me in some sort of unspoken subtext thing and kills himself sort-of off-screen but never mind because we'll not be following that one up and I'm being all extra-narky and starey and oh no! I've been slashed by the new leader and THE END.

It's terrible. It never actually explains any of the character motivations, even important ones like why the protagonist (telling I can't even remember his name, eh?) wants so much to join the gang or why secretly gay and refined Elvis is in the group to start with considering they're all psychotic pub-fight morons. It seemingly drags on for ever, not only due to the fact that the Lovefilm disk kept skipping thus adding an extra half hour on. CHEERS LOVEFILM. The movie frequently grinds to a halt with long runs of staring and snarling and everybody has wedge haircuts. The budget's clearly too low to afford more than a half a dozen coppers to defend a train station from warring gang (yeah, right) and despite all wearing distinctive identical gang uniforms and causing violence every time they step outside, there's no sign of the police ever enquiring after them, even when they effectively commit manslaughter, even murder in a pub. The murder by the way is inflicted on the gang leader, and later at his funeral the young baby faced killer cries a lot out of remorse, but a couple of scenes later clearly gleefully slashes the hero from ear to mouth in a 'shock' ending. Great consistency there.

The only good things about it is that the soundtracks pretty good (The Light Pours Out of Me by Magazine? Tops.) and Liverpool is shot rather atmospherically with milky white skies and misty docks. The look does feel period as well. Aside from that, utter guff. Elvis, approximately a dozen or so times in the film, portentously utters "When will it end?" - a Joy Division lyric - increasingly growing angry and bored in my seat I felt it was a very important question.

We have all agreed never to speak of the film again.

Mark Kermode thinks it's great. THE IDIOT.

1.5/5

I have no idea why I put a question mark there. But then, every line in the Scouse accent sounded like a question so it was probably a psychological hangover from that.

Has anyone seen Book of Eli yet? Is it any good?

Me I did. Yes.

Ok, I'll expand on that a little bit. I'm not keen on following Pete with a movie review as he is far more eloquent than I am...plus, he actually seems to know what he's talking about. I find it hard to see beyond the pew pew and gory deaths.

I thought the film was great, not zomgwft amazing but extremely good. It's hard to say much without giving anything away and I don't want to use spoilers but given the subject matter, the film is nicely subtle, I think it would be very easy for the story to be heavy handed with it's message or the theme that ran throughout the film. There is 'A Big Reveal' at the end, which is handled well and doesn't leave you feeling cheated or in total disbelief. Denzel Washington is brilliant as Eli and I thought the character was very well written.

The post-apocalyptic world the movie is set in is very FO3, the sepia tones, decimation, decay and general state of the human race. The story is set 31 years after 'the flash' so people have adjusted to their world and the way things are have been accepted as the norm so it's not as depressing as it might have been.

There are a couple of laugh out loud moments and some scenes of gore but they are not gratuitous or over the top. The movie is a bit slow to start but I was expecting a Denzel Washington post-apocalyptic blockbuster action movie, which it's not. I'd recommend it to anyone, everyone I saw it with last night enjoyed it for what it was and we all came away feeling better for the experience.

8/10

Book of Eli - A bit dull. 5/10.

Here's some more about it. It's plodding and unexciting whilst having an excessively christian message to it. The ending I found contrived and silly. I found myself wanting to go to sleep at about the hour mark. However it manages to avoid dropping below 5 by being quite pretty and having a really nice score and Tom Waits.

I saw the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still. Didn't really make much sense and left me feeling fairly disgruntled, but it passed the time while I watched it. 5/10

HC brought this home from work the other night, along with a few other movies she'd blagged from one of the review sections. Is it really as bad to warrant a Rev 5/10? I say that with the thinking that you are usually insightful but always, IMO far too easy on mediocre films and with this in mind I'm intrigued as to how fucking awful this could be. I don't think I should watch it as the original is one of my fondest childhood movies... Now, if they'd cast KeeeeeNU as Gort, it might have worked :-)

It would have shown up as a bizarro fullonrobotchubby link with a huge string of gibberish characters at the end. As I'm at work.
