That's my question answered then.

I want this game to happen and I've pledged, but I assumed the £1.25m goal would be justified by them delivering the full whack sometime in 2014, not 2016 by using that money to hire MOAR PPLS. I can live without planet landing and never believed the ship interior stuff to be entirely necessary (even if it would be quite fun), but at first it was pitched as "LOOK AT ALL THIS STUFF WE'RE DOING" and now Braben has casually added "...later". Fair enough he's come out with it now rather than after the Kickstarter closes, but it is a little disappointing.

I so want this game to be done right though. If that means DLC updates later until they refine ideas and methods, fine by me. There are a few games, very few, where I'd flang pence at until the end of the world. Elite is one of them.

Post subject:  Re: Elite

I pretty much agree with Dimrill. I never thought planetary landings were a realistic prospect given the March 2014 "deadline", at least not at the quality people are probably expecting (and people are expecting a LOT, seemingly). I only pledged the minimum amount that gives you the game. If the game turns out to be as good as I hope, I won't mind paying a bit more now and then to make the game more awesome.

I am extremely wary of developers with an awesome looking game who list all the great things they want to add and promise that they'll do them really quickly but want to get the main game out first. Those add-ons can languish in the same development hell the main game did.

Hasn't Braben already suggested it'll run peer-to-peer, thus not especially requiring a central server? Or have I got that all wrong?

Holy shit I want this game!

I haven't heard mention if that is what he intends.

The game will still need to connect somewhere centrally to get the list of peers I'd imagine.

With Kickstarter we aren't even doing that. It isn't even a pre-order :(

Thanks for the tip-off. I checked the page an hour or so ago and was disappointed that I'd have to pledge a minimum of £30 to get a copy of the game that might not even run well on this PC, but at £20, I've taken a punt on it.

I've succumbed and pledged 20 quid. The deal breaker was the thought of the Oliver's faces when Elite succeeds.

There should be a extra pledge option for a video to watch them weep if you bid 100 quid.

I'd be super-pissed off if I paid £30 for the game because all the £20 options had gone and then they make more of them.

I'm just going to buy it for £15 a month after it comes out.

They didn't make more of them. People simply raised their pledge to a higher tier freeing up the £20 ones so new backers could get in. And anyone who had already pledged £30 would then also be able to go down to £20 if they wanted.

That's precisely what the Pro Pinball mob did. One minute, there's a tier (30 quid, IIRC), which was "all of the games on a platform of your choice". Half-way through, when it was clear the Kickstarter was fucked, they then added a tier at half that price, specifically for touchscreen devices (like an iPad, which is the device I wanted to use for the game anyway). I kept my pledge as it was, but it irked that they didn't think things through from the start. Mind you, it was all moot in the end anyway, given that the thing crashed and burned.

Not the tracker I saw, which put it easily meeting its target. It's projected to exceed its target by 7% and has been all day.

It's also already on 98.4%

In fact if there is a bit more of a push it looks like they might make the 1.4 million target needed for a Mac version.

Given how much they have to show in development I think its a safe bet. Although I think they have over promised. If we ever get to go big game hunting on planets, walk around space stations and stow away on other peoples ships etc, I'll eat my hat.*
