MrsA is set to remain a contractor until end of October in MK. Which is nice.

1. Mrs W and I have been married for 36 years and she only threatened me with divorce once, about 15 years ago.

2. That's great news, Grim. Hope she's feeling a lot better and continues to improve.

Offer now received.

11.25k increase, but at a loss of 3 days holiday and 4% pension (from 13% non-contributory to 9% non-contributory).

I should probably do the sums to see what that works out at.

If 11.25k isn't more than 4% of your salary, I think you're alright :p

Aye, there is no way you can lose by taking the payrise and contributing the extra 4% personally (after tax relief, it works out at 2.4%).

That holiday point is almost certainly negotiable, too.

If I pay 3% to the pension, they'll match it with another 3%. I can also 'buy' more holiday.

Obviously I'm up on the deal (duh). Just not as much as initially thought.

Ah well, still accepting it, obv.

Just got my contract extended. Instead of possibly being out of here on Friday, with nowhere to go to, I'm now here until the end of July and they might have picked up some more SharePoint work beyond that...

Unfortunately, the rise does not even nearly cover the nursery fees we shall soon be incurring :(

Eesh. Put her in a drawer in your office....?

If the nursery fees are that massive, is it worth Maria staying at home with the little one a bit longer, possibly? Babies are super expensive to pay someone to look after because of the number of people required to staff baby nurseries. I know it's all stuff you've probably taken account of and every family situation is different etc. but for extra income (minimal by the time nursery fees were taken into account) we got from me working when ours were small, I can honestly say it was not worth it in the slightest.

I think I was bringing home maybe £400 for 190hrs work/month, for 2 years. Unfortunately, we desperately needed that money and I think the only way I got through it was to convince myself I was furthering my career and that one day it'd be worth it, financially.

Have you looked at the tax credit/tax breaks you might get, too? I have no idea what they are or if you'd qualify as it's all a bit different here but you should explore every avenue.

Pay rises are wasted on parents.

When I left my last job I'd been there for 4 years, they wanted to keep me but couldn't offer much. When they advertised it, it was on the next grade up. But I didn't mind, because it went to a bloke married with two kids - so he'd have many more 'not fun' expenses to cover.
