Yes microsoft have finally figured out how to do a d-pad which will finally make it a pretty much perfect pad except for the ghastly green colour its going to come in. also peculiar is that its only coming out for a limited period on october 24th in relation to the next PES game, lovely, also in America? no luck its only coming out in europe, asia and latine america. When did microsoft turn into a bunch of cock teases?

edit for linky links.

I'm reaching/hoping here, but I was assuming the improvements were solely to the universally derided D-pad only and other than the rather offensive colour it is in fact identical to the existing pad?

:this: It looks like the same piece of shit we have got now.

Also, who uses the d-pad when playing Evo anyway?

My main gripe with the 360 controller and the ps3 controller for playing Evo is the trigger buttons...ok they are fantastic for lots of other games, but for footy games and beat em ups where a quick press is needed they are a right pain in the arse to use.

I cant wait for PES9, but then I say that every year only to be bitterly disappointed.

The d-pad is internally different. They are claiming to have pounded it into dust in a mortar and pestle, dissolved the dust in raw alcohol, filtered out the squishy shitness factor, then mixed it with plenty of awesomite and zomgium before recrafting it into something that doesn't suck.

yeah it doesnt look too different, but they must have done something to it. Ill wait for hardware reviews before shelling out because I remain dubious.

What?!!! the Xbox 360 pad is easily the best game controlling device I've ever used, bar none. It even edges out the Zipstick. It's just got one weak point, the D-pad. But who uses the D-pad anyway?

If I got one of those Nintendo GXbox 2's, I'd want a D-Pad for the retro offerings. Why has nobody made a decent D-Pad since the Megadrive? I got a lovely Competition Pro 2 pad for my Megadrive a few months back.

The D-pad on the original Xbox was fine - I don't understand why they couldn't just use that again.

Classic Controller and original DS are the two best I've seen in recent times.

Post subject:  Re: The Perfect Pad

I find the Classic Controller too light and flimsy - a bit like the standard PS3 controller (dual shock is much better, though). And the fact that you have to plug it into the Wiimote makes me angry.
The Wavebird D-pad makes me happy, though.

i absolutely love the classic controller.

And i understand how people like xbox360 pad. Do you play retro live games on the analog stick? really? And the shoulder buttons are horrible for PES. i have one on my pc because i found it cheap, and no one likes to play with it. It's always arguments to see who will play with the 9€ thrustmaster pad.

Yes. Really. I haven't used a d-pad since I got my gamecube. (Well, when I had a choice, that is)

I bought the 360 pad for my PC, as I needed a pad for development work. That I liked it an awful lot explains quite well why I got a 360 so early.

It's like you get to "be" the posh kid from school who had a BBC Micro with the analogue joysticks, when you only had a Spectrum with a Quickshot 2 before.

i never got used to play with analog stick, unless it's 3d aventures like prince of persia or Zelda. I don't see it offering any advantages over a traditional d-pad when it comes to football games, 2d plataformers or schmups.

Post subject:  Re: The Perfect Pad

The simple answer is greater fidelity. (more than)360 degrees of movement using an analogue stick compared to 8 on a d-pad. Trying to aim for small gaps is inevitably going to be easier with the stick. Which would be handy for at least two of the game types you mention.

Post subject:  Re: The Perfect Pad

Trying to do super moves in Street Fighter II is extremely hard on the analog stick, but also uncomfortable on the dpad.

Contrasting this, on the Saturn with my Eclipse Pad I have a great time with Darkstalkers. The original bulbous Saturn controller (which I also have) was almost as horrible as the 360's dpad.

Comfortable and sturdy. Not placed in the most elegant position, unfortunately.

Got one of those Hori Gamecube pads that resembles the Super NES pad, but purple, and with GC face buttons. Kinda nice, but the d-pad isn't quite as responsive as the original design, but nearly there. More annoyed about the face buttons though - had it not used the GC layout, it'd be ideal for the Virtual Console.

I'd be interested to know if there was any worse d-pad than the one on Commodore's CD32 controller...

I never find this to be the case in 2D games, but it's probably because I mostly play shmups, and almost never make smooth, rolling movements around the screen. I'm always zig-zagging everywhere and making tiny wee adjustments to my positioning on the fly, and I find analogue sticks feel a bit slow and unresponsive in those kinds of situations.

Maybe I need to stop being a big Wendy and totally hammer the bastards.

Bloody hell, something useful resulting from a football game release. Usually all that happens is the second hand sections of game shops get flooded with last years, which they eventually flog for 50p each. I see them as the algae on an otherwise beautiful pond. Or maybe I'm just taking the piss there.

I don't play football games at all, you see.

did you read the thread, apparently the fucking thing is pretty much the same as it is.

People say its not precise enough as it is, but I always liek d-pads to be quite rigid in there directions, especially in the main 4 directions.

I'll be honest, since Eurogamer's review of Braid my faith in anything they say has somewhat fallen.

Regardless of Braid's quality and whether it deserved 10 or not (and also regardless of the fact that even the facts given in the most positive reviews make me think it is far from the perfect game, without even taking into consideration the fact I found the demo unimpressive following all the hype) that review was so up it's own arse the fact it went live as was makes me wonder if they even bother to read stuff prior to it being published.

Although is wasn't as pretentious as the theories I've heard around the story line. And apologies for ranting about Braid in the wrong thread.
