You might be thinking about Very Bad Things with Cameron Diaz

Any red flags for watching with sub-10-year-old kids?

We watched Planes, Trains and Automobiles on Saturday, which they adored. But the car rental scene crashed through the room like a wrecking ball. The kids thought it was hilarious. We were horrified (and amused).

We watched 'The Dig' yesterday. It is a lovely film about the excavation of the Sutton Hoo. It is a lovely slow paced film. A very pleasant antidote to 2021.

There's a scene in Seven Psychopaths like this.

I’ve seen Seven Psychopaths and Very Bad Things, so there’s also a good chance I’m getting both films smooshed into one in my brain.

Thanks!

There's also some comedy violence and a scary bit which is probably on a par with a mediocre Doctor Who episode or perhaps when the hero meets the dragon at a panto. Doesn't last long.

The main risk is your kids deciding they want to win Eurovision some day.

Thank you! Yeah we started Doctor Who a couple of weeks ago - the Eccleston ones. They both love it, but they both seemed a bit stressed out by the end of Aliens of London part 1, so we haven't returned to it. A pal has already warned me off Who from Tenant onwards, due in large part to the Cybermen.

Escape From Pretoria: In arpetheid South Africa, two young white men are imprisoned for fighting the system. Then plot their escape.

It's really, really, good, tense, and rocks along the running time.

We watched Save The Last Dance because I was in the mood for Julia Stiles and bought it on DVD (£1 including P&P, fact fans). It’s not great, but dancing Julia Stiles, yay!

Watched Gone in 60 Seconds. Not the Nicholas Cage version, the 1974 original. I did not know there was a 1974 original before today!

The first hour or so is awful, the acting is bad, the dialogue is so bad (what they are saying is bad, but also often it was recorded later and really badly dubbed in). However, the last 40 minutes or so are amazing! All the budget went on this car chase. It's worth sitting through the first hour just for the climax!

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (on Netflix) is a superb use of two hours of your time delightfully portioned into several short stories.

I also watched this. I couldn't see how they would make me care in this satire about how appalling people get away with awful things. And quickly, oh yes, they did, and it is not that film, or at least not in the way I thought.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Am I a bad person for cheering at the end - an actual, out loud, though on my own, cheer?

I’m watching The Snyder Cut of Justice League.

I couldn’t give two fucks about Batman, Superman and the like but I think the story behind this release is nothing more than amazing.

Anyway, here’s my few cents as I watch it, but I doubt I’ll watch it all today:

The CG and green screen effects are still really fucking horrendous. Marvel has some really great and really talented special effects artists and companies work on their stuff. DC is going for something different and darker; it’s not all throwing coloured balls and lasers at each other, but the effects are still really shit. The outdoors green screen stuff is just terrible, I mean, come on, the Lord of the Rings movies shit all over this and they were released two decades ago.

And the costumes are really bad. Especially the Aquaman people, man alive, they look stupid as fuck.

And now Steven Wolf is ... a transformer. For some reason.

This is apparently 4 hours long, but if you sped up all the slow motion rubbish it’d be half that I bet.

I watched Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, which is a surprisingly PG retelling of the Ted Bundy story, focussed around the courtroom.

It's well worth a watch. Zac Efron brings in a game-changing perfomance, and Phil Collin's daughter isn't too shabby either.

I don’t like the fly men, either.

And now there’s some really weird song choices over slow mo scenes, which were changed from the original.

And Gal Godot is a great Wonder Woman but whoever thought it was a good idea to have her narrate a story needs shooting in the face. She could put a narcoleptic to sleep.

Some of the horses racing across the land in battle look crap cause half of them are clipped off the sides of the fucking screen.

Sabre Wulf chopped a guy in half. I approve. More of this please.

Also the underwater effects where Whorf nicks the “mother box” (*rolls eyes*) looked super sweeeeet. I see where the extra money went.

We Watched At Eternity’s Gate, a biopic about Vincent Van Gogh, with Willem Dafoe playing Van Gogh, Mads Micklesson as the priest, and a few other notable names.

Neither of us enjoyed it quite as much as Loving Vincent, but I think (for me) it was because the film relied heavily on an effect where the bottom half of the screen was blurred, as you saw through Vincent’s eyes. The rest was very, ‘shaky cam’, as in Blair Witch, and the result of these two things together made it physically difficult to focus and watch. There was no indication of why they made these choices. Did the blurring of vision represent the clouding of his mind, a visual defect, his way of seeing things ‘differently’? It certainly seems to best represent a defect of eyesight, and though I’ve seen it said that Van Gogh maybe over-represented yellow, I’ve never seen anything to suggest that he was pretty blind (but only in the bottom half of his vision).

Maybe I’m just too stupid to have understood, but I t was confusing and could have perhaps been either made a bit more obvious what they were trying to achieve, or the effect done away with, because it really detracted from the beautiful but tragic story.

Solid performances, especially from Dafoe who often went many screen minutes without any dialogue.

Right, that final fight was so much better than the original.

And no stupid Russian family hiding under a table.

And more Flash. His final bit where he somehow reverses time was pretty fucking badass.

And its more gory, well, for a superhero film.

All of these are good.

The thirty minute epilogue: not so much. It’s like the end of LOTR.

Still, who the fuck was the green guy!? And why is Batman so fucking useless!? I expected him to use his gadgets while fighting but, no, he has to resort to picking up an alien gun on every occasion.

Overall: the Snyder cut is a success over the original. Hell, I’d even be up for a Justice League 2.

Game Night: Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams are beautiful this comedy thriller. Many belly laugh out loud moments, and well worth 100 of your minutes.

Late to the party but I enjoyed the 2012 Keith Urban “Dredd” last night. Much better than the Stallone one. Gritty and very violent. Some nice nods to other characters in the graffiti. Anyone got any Slo-Mo?
