Chrome is on version 13, to be fair. Although it just gets on with the whole upgrade thing without feeling the need to bother me.

Ooo... just found out that using the new print function in Chrome I can save the output directly as a PDF by right-clicking on the preview. Neat.

Of course, Chrome's now up to 16. In the Dev channel, anyway. Which is fucked because it can't even render paragraphs of text properly.

But who goes on the internet to read words any more?

Why are you in the dev channel? Do you make plugins?

So, Chrome people, v15 has just gone stable and Google are making a big deal about applications you use in chrome. I have extensions installed in chrome (adblock, gmail button etc, the usual stuff) but I haven't even looked into applications... tbh I don't really see what the difference between the two are?!

So, educate me do. What's the difference? Are there some must use chrome apps my life is missing? Where do I start in exploring all this shizzle?

ta

Genuine question - why?

I'd rather something uses my available RAM rather than just have it sat there wasted, being used for nothing!

I've got (looks) Poppit, Entanglement and Angry Birds. I've tried Angry Birds once, not tried the others.

Yeah, so extensions are browser enhancements and apps are, basically, games. Like, why would I need to install a Gmail App for Chrome when I can just click on a link to Gmail to go to the site? It makes no sense to me?!

It's related to the Chrome OS isn't it? Purely browser based/cloud storage apps.

I've got the GMail* app. They've cunningly stopped normal-gmail from offering offline, requiring the app instead. That and it can, if you let it, run in the background, so it's up to date when you pop the window open.

For a while it was a buggy piece of shit that pegged the CPU it was on the first time it started, even without a window on screen, requiring murder-death in the Chrome task manager to restart... after which it was fine. Seems alright now though.

Oh, and I've got Calendar as well, for the same reason. Or maybe because it's the official way to create 'app' shortcuts now. I forget exactly.

* Edit: No, apparently I've got the Offline Google Mail app. Which is completely different to the GMail app on the front page of the web store, that appears to just be a link.

It appears that this is just an attempt by Google to blur the boundaries of the definition of "an app". As Dav Paz said, it would relate to how they are trying to change the culture of computer use with ChromeOS, by getting everyone to use Cloud Apps, which, in regular terms, are really just links to webpages which have some fancy HTML5 thing going on so you can play Angry Birds, play chess, edit photos or use your email. So, I'm deciding that a "Chrome App" is really just a link to a web service. I'll stick to bookmarks, ta.

Mine doesn't matter to them though.

An app can live outside the browser's inner frame, though. It can give you unread counts of your G+ messages or emails or Facebook chat statuses and whatnot in the browser toolbar or notification tray or whatnot. Ordinary web sites cannot do that, and that's an idea that has some utility, particularly for Chrome OS where there is no scope to run an IM client alongside the web browser.

HA! I love the fact that it's out of 4. I assumed my Chrome score of 2.5 was out of 5.

Amusingly, that site also can't give a score to Mobile IE.

The "FastestChrome" add-on is just another link-preloader to make you think your connection has sped up or something, but it does something interesting to forums like this one - scroll to the bottom of the page and if there is a page after it (on the topic list or in a topic itself) you can just keep scrolling.

Clever.
