It is, for some reason it only shows up in the website search & it's only the paid version.

I came up with this business model about six months ago, but because you need to write a forum-side plugin to expose an API I decided it was too much work. I was going to try and write a native iPhone Beex client though, and just use the web interface for stuff. I probably won't bother now.

I'm sure you could get away with a more simplistic version that just scrapes HTML produced by a very slim forum template (like our mobile one).

But, it has to be said, the way this works seems to be optimal for bandwidth and I'm happy to pay for it.

Scraping and parsing the HTML on this site is not the simplest task in the world. Trust me on that one.

In-fucking-deed. Nested tables inside nested tables. You have to work yourself from the inside out just to get the poster's username, then back down through elements and siblings to get any data. It'd be a nightmare.

Oh yes; a server side plugin is the only sane way to solve the problem.

Of course now I can write a client that uses their plugin (or this touchbb one, if that's better).

Is there really that much you can improve on this one? They might add support for custom post icons and whatnot down the road, you never know.

Dunno. I wanted to write one more as an exercise in iPhone app development really.

I'd like working quotes. TouchBB seems to have that though.

It's horrifically slow on the built-in browser on my Samsung Jet Ultra/S8000 (which I got a month ago or something). Probably slower than the normal skin actually. In fact, there's a several second wait while it reskins. And always has a 'log out' link with no 'log in', despite not being logged in. It's one of the slowest sites I've visited (though that's pretty much limited to here, WotR and Facebook).

I meant to mention it sooner.

You've probably worked this out already, but the logout link takes you to the login page if you aren't logged in.
I kept meaning to tell Grim... about stuff like this, but I forgot, or couldn't be bothered or something.

Actually, I hadn't. It's pretty much unusable on my phone, so I don't. I only use the browser on WiFi at home (having no data included on my tariff, and never getting a 3G signal anywhere anyway), which is "when I'm out back having a smoke" and "in bed, but left the laptop downstairs."

Always a worthwhile ambition. I just paid for a *renewal* of my developer subscription which drove home the fact that I've failed to get started on it for an entire year :S

Yes I'm sure that's just a wrinkle. I mean the quotes are there, they're just not highlighted / indented / boxed or whatever.

Another advantage I've just noticed, is that it's quite happy to switch between wifi and mobile data, whereas the browser based forum logs you out.

Yeah, it's caching, I think. If you come out and re-enter it updates.

I think limitations in it are probably because it was designed to be an interface for vBulletin and phpBB support is relatively new for them.

Um, I'm not sure that's true. Their vBullitien plugin is still Alpha, but this PHPBB version is 1.5.something. BEER!

Wrongoid! Their Invision is in alpha, their vB and PHPBB are both mature (ish).

Much faster than tapatalk, renders quotes and images correctly, but doesn't do unread posts and it shows the whole of a thread on one screen with no pages. Scrolling to the end of a thread is sloooooow.

I agree with Craster. It seems quite nice, but it's a bit laggy, the scrolling is just stupid, and for some reason the reply box keeps scrolling the top line of input text off the top of the screen. Quite shoddy, really.

Kalmar, use the link Grim... posted above.

Nope, that's getting deleted, too. There's no point having a forum app if it can't keep track of what you have and haven't read, especially if it displays the whole of each thread on a single page. Why bother coding in any other features if you can't even manage caching and persistence?

I've logged in, and it gives no indication of unread posts, and doesn't jump to the latest posts in a thread. It's silly, because TouchBB is so clearly superior to Tapatalk in every other way, particularly speed.

Quite nice, but:

  • You can't click the topic icons to jump to the most recent post any more.
  • The elements of each post are very cramped around the post content text.
  • There's no indication of how many pages a thread goes on for.

1. Yes you can, there's a small yellow box that is the 'first unread' link.
3. Yes there is, it's at the bottom of the page.
EDIT - and the top, in fact. You blind, foo'?

I've just made the default action when you click a thread name "go to first unread post" rather than "go to first post" -- I think you're massively more likely to be doing the former. However, either I cannot find the "reset style cache" option, or I don't have enough admin rights to do so; either way it might not jump into life yet.

Edit -- nope, seems to be working.

Any other tweaks?

The little yellow box is very small and not always present. Gaywood's bypassed that problem.

The pages thing I meant on the index page. I guess it's not quite so important and relates to my first complaint, which again Gaywood has bypassed.

Gaywood, if you could just give everything a little breathing room it'd be much better. A little padding on the posts themselves so the text isn't quite up to the edge of the screen, and some space between post titles/authors and the content itself etc. It's just a bit too awkward to scan, but an easy thing to fix.

The indent for quotes is huge which really squashes them. Considering they're coloured, the indent should only really be about 2-3px.

Also, 'jump to first unread post' always works then immediately jumps up to the top of the page, for some reason.
