No.

As for Conceptual Art, it does fuck all for me, I get much more enjoyment from contemporary illustration.

To fix that we'd need a better name for modernism.

Edit: beaten to the punch!

No, as it relates to the phase after modernism, where the high concepts of modernism were subverted and twisted.

In everyday use, yes, I suppose it does.

They should do the decent common sense thing and call it "futurism".

Apart from that's an early 20th century movement.

The Futurism movement happened before the post modernist.

Then you'd need a different name for the 'old' Futurist movement, Mr Chris! :p

Edit: twice!

Nope. It annoys the piss out of me.

Ugh, tell me about it. I had to do a brief art history study once or twice this year. It was even more infuriating than I remember. Yes, I get the point that his presentation and technique are different and less than 100% realistic. Yes, I get the significance of this deviation from the tradition of the time, and can see how he provides a transitional stage between that and the radicals who followed him. No, I'm not going to write another 2,000 words of utter, utter fucking bullshit about how his decision to paint the pears a bit out of proportion is SO MEANINGFUL and representative of the hardships of the much-overlooked Bolivian Jewish neighbourhood in Stepney. Fuck off fuck off fuck off.

After a while, they're never talking about the work anymore - they're talking about some bollocks they've made up based on some other bollocks they've made up which in turn is based on some tertiary bollocks they made up which was vaguely related to the painting. Sometimes, an apple is just a fucking apple.

I adore reading. I love a fair bit of victorian, Georgian and shabby ancient writing (and even some plays, which surprised me frankly). I could talk about them and their significance for hours. But I can think of few things that I would loathe more than studying an english literature course.

What was that line Stuart Campbell wrote about the MAME nerds? Something like trying to preserve and study a butterfly by sticking a pin through its heart, instead of watching it fly around being what it is. It's part that ("the true aim of writing is to enable the reader better to enjoy life, or better to endure it." Eh? EH?), and part the complete bollocks people talk.

Also the fact that when studying something, you can't just write "look, I get it. It's full of references to ancient mythology. Woo. It is STILL SHIT and you can shove your essay." Bah and piss.

As MaliA says, no, if it's used properly - though it is one of most abused phrases in language.

Who's Stuart Campbell? I've heard that before only it wasn't about nerds and the subject wasn't a butterfly. It was the exact senitment though.

Went to Frieze today. Most contemporary art is crap. Most art is crap if I'm being honest, but boy was there a lot of shit on display. Some of it poorly executed, some of it not. Most of it intellectually bereft of anything interesting to say. I know I'm biased as I paint - there were some good things there, but on the whole it was a bit overwhelmingly trite.
Great people watching though!

Just to prove that all modern art is not in fact shit, I spent literally seconds today creating a post-modern existential critique of modern life in the style of prepubescent simian.
