Don't worry, I'm sure it'll all trickle down really soon.

Nothing wrong with trickle down economics - up to a point. How else do you explain the burgeoning middle classes of India, China and Brazil? But, we've passed that point IMO, and besides this isn't even economics at all anymore, or if it is, it's a whole new version of it. Not in a good way.

(I'm no more a supporter of the above than you are, probably even less so; if this is supposed to be some "I told you so" type post, it fails on just about every level imaginable. I believe in real commerce, real business, real economics. Besides, I think you'll find things were just fine in 1997).

It wasn't directed at you. It was simply my observation that the whole thing seems broken. I'm not sure I can even point the finger at this party or that party. Money runs the world now and all our tinpot little politicians can do is fiddle around at the edges. These mega-rich have everyone over a barrel and can demand whatever they like on pain of simply fucking off abroad to another tax-haven.

It might sound defeatist but there's something inexorable about the whole thing, I honestly have no idea what can be done about it.

You can't threaten to do something you have already done.

They pretty much are the Rich List. Top 9 out of 10 are, as I recall.

I don't know. But the Bob Diamonds and hedge fund managers of this world, the ones who are really fucking over the economy, aren't paying much tax here (if any). The Mittals et al aren't really the problem.

I don't buy the "politicians can't do anything" line, either. They can make laws. They can regulate. If MegaCorp X threatens to move abroad, they can prevent them from operating in this country. (For example, if Barclays threaten to pull out because of taxes, then say "OK, off you go then - oh, by the way, we're withdrawing your banking licence to operate".)

I know that sounds totalitarian - and it isn't something I'm comfortable with - but we are still in something of a democracy, and those that make the law have the ultimate power.

Pretty staggering piece for the 'Torygraph' to run.....

Specifically, it means an assault on "fractional reserve banking". If lenders are forced to put up 100pc reserve backing for deposits, they lose the exorbitant privilege of creating money out of thin air.

This is Poddy-no-money speaking here, and this opinion will probably change if I had billions, but if I had enough money to wipe out the UK's debt, I'd give it to them on the following conditions:

* A giant statue of me is to be erected in London. A proper classic statue that'll stand the test of time, like the Nelson one.
* George Osbourne has to quit and publically say "sorry for letting a 12 year old run the money"
* NHS must remain government owned.
* Maybe even re-privatise the railways. Depends how much that costs.

Someone as rich as you would have advisors to politely explain the current situation before you finished filling in the giant cheque.

I meant to opposite. I meant re-nationalise!

I think the first thing I'd hire is a proof reader for all the internet nonsense I spout.

This looks interesting.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2013/feb ... bert-reich

Earlier in the week, I notice that he'd tweeted: "Britain's austerity economics is complete disaster. Its economy shrinking." And pasted a link to the Wall Street Journal in which the head of the IMF took George Osborne to task. When I ask him about it, he calls our austerity economics "a cruel hoax". Cruel because "it hurts people who have been hurt enough". And a hoax because, "It simply doesn't work. Look at the figures."

It should be our crunch time too. We have more people living in poverty who have jobs than those who don't, according to Oxfam. The average British citizen – the average – is three pay cheques away from destitution. And with the entire country poised on the brink of a triple-dip recession.
