Can't you just run around and around your garden lots of times?

I once did 20 loops of a park with a 1 mile circumference as a training run.

It's not a bad idea actually, as it gives you the option to stop at your car after any loop, rather than being unable to go on and being 10 miles from home.

There are some great routes around Broseley out the back towards Benthall Hall etc, but prepare to get your arse kicked by the hills (in whichever direction you run in)

If you're around at 6:30 on Friday, come to the top Birchmeadow Car Park and run with the joggers :)

(Or I'm around from 5:30 every weeknight at the minute if you ever want to run with me!)

I don't think that would work for me, I have two 5k loops worked out either side of my home so I do both for a 10k and it takes all my willpower to not stop after the first 5k.

The other thing was carrying water. For long runs > 8 miles, you really need to have a decent amount to drink. For something like 20 you need at least a litre or two. Trying to carry that shit while running is a massive pain the arse*, so you need some kind of clever loop that gets you access to it at around the right times.

Well... that was painful!

Went out to do my 3k loop that I ran non-stop a week ago. Didn't feel too uncomfortable starting off, but I just couldn't catch my breath, and by halfway I had to stop, my chest felt extremely tight and I just couldn't breath enough. Tried a couple more bits of running over the next 1k and couldn't do more than a few steps at a time, so had to walk it. I then managed to run the last 500m, and it felt looser.

No idea what that was about! My heart rate stayed well in my comfort zone the whole way round (until I had to take my chest strap off as that wasn't helping me to breath).
I'm not ill, it's the same chest strap i've always worn without a problem, my last few runs have been over twice the distance I managed to actually run today, I don't have asthma

What the fuck was that all about!

At risk of posting to this thread too much, I would say don't sweat it. JBR will also tell you that some days are just... wrong. There doesn't seem to be an obvious reason for it, but on those days everything is crap. Your legs are leaden, you can't seem to get going, everything aches, no lung power.

If nothing seems obviously off that'll be it. Try again tomorrow or the day after and it'll almost certainly be just fine again.

Yet another anecdote: On a 16 mile training run I got to 5k and turned around and just about made it home. The speed was OK but those 6 miles were incredibly painful for some reason, and I couldn't face the idea of going further. No reason for it.

Yeah, some days are just wrong. See, I can say exactly that! I am having shortness of breath problems a lot at the moment, too, so am just blaming summertime and assuming I'll be alright in a couple of months time-maybe yours was an allergy thing, too. Sometimes it clears after a while exercising for me, but generally I'm just putting up with it and trying not to get freaked out if my heart rate is high for the pace I'm (not) doing.

My progress this year is shit.

I had a back operation late November 2013 and was cleared to do running around March

Then I did nothing as our was up 3-4 times a night and I was tired all the time.

I did some short runs in the summer and ended up with pulled muscles in my leg, I was in some way happy about this as before the back operation all the hammer from running was going into my back muscles.

Now I'm getting some work done on my back each week to sort out my muscles and doing stretch exercises

Hope to get back running soon, hate doing it in the winter as its all on pavements in the dark.

As a result lost fuck all weight, now that our son is settled my wife is at least giving me shit about this again so hopefully this will keep me motivated

A friend of mine ran to the start of the London Marathon from his house (which wasn't too far, I don't think), ran the marathon, ran the marathon again, then ran home.

Each time he came past my flat (we were watching from the balcony, it was on the route) he'd wave and shout at us. He didn't even look tired :S

I normally cycle to the parkruns, which is 5 miles. It sounds OK to say you cycled 5 miles, ran 5k and then cycled 5 miles again. As long as I don't thrash my way there it mostly just warms the legs up.

None of it is very far, but it's all to the good. When I do it...

Post subject:  Re: Middle Age Spread

A warm up really does help-my 'proper runner' friend likes half an hour, which feels excessive, but I was dog tired after a long run on Friday, jogged slowly round for 15mins then surprised myself with a half decent parkrun. So some sort of warm up, cycle or walk, helps even if you feel tired on the start line.

Did 10.4k on Friday which is my furthest distance yet (not all running). Most surprised that my legs weren't knackered over the weekend, think maybe I should have pushed myself a little harder.

Better news though - my jeans are starting to feel a little loose so MAYBE all of this running is finally working :DD

Well done :)

Ours was terrible, Mrs T was taken ill halfway round so we had to stop (she's fine now), but I was feeling pretty rough at that point so wasn't too bothered about giving up!

My main issue is I need to strengthen my legs I think, I wasn't breathing hard, just having difficulty picking up my legs and moving forward.

Felt crap this morning so decided to run it off, but once I started couldn't stop (which makes a change because if I run on my own I'm lucky to make 2 miles). Ended up doing nearly 11km in about 1hr 15mins - furthest yet. Feel a shit ton better for it too :D
