It's allowed to be used in a 'none aggressive' manner, and infrequently, at 15.

I suspect Bad Day For The Cut got an 18 for the way in which it utilised the word.

Holy shit it's a 15, the stuff they can get away with at that certificate these days!

(Mind you, I get the feeling the most violent bits had been trimmed a bit to get an R in the States, as the edits were overly quick and severe in a couple of moments I felt, and R generally translates to 15 these days.)

It’s great.

(Summary: It doesn’t break any new ground; nonoutstandig acting, simply serviceable; the kooky IT wizard is shit; it’s a bit daft; the cinematography is quite good though; the violence is groovy; i think it’s filmed on digital camera so it looks a bit cheap; it nicely tips over 90 minutes run-time which is just right.)

I watched this tonight and whilst I think you're selling it rather short in some regards, it is basically a superb B movie experience with some splendidly over the top violence.

I didn't get the 'cheap' looking side of things at all, they obviously didn't have a mega-budget to chuck at it but I don't think anything looked out of place or cheaped out on either.

This film comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as some great revenge movie thrills with sci-fi overtones and sentient computers can be bad and stuff.

A solid 8/10 but a bit better than that so 830/1000.

(Give BAD DAY FOR THE CUT a go, Mr Satsuma.)

Last night I watched ‘United 93’ which is on Amazon Prime, it’s the story of one of the hijacked flights on 9/11, which crashed before it reached its target. (United 93 was the flight where the passengers overpowered the hijackers, having learned what had happened with the other hijacked planes. Once they realised the hijackers were on a suicide mission, they collectively decided to try and take the plane back.)

Whilst it’s a dramatisation it attempts to be as accurate as possible, drawing on all available records from the time, the families of the passengers assisted with the production, recounting their last conversations with their loved ones, and suchlike. (Indeed, a lot of people on the ground play themselves. The film acknowledges that the final moments of what happened on the plane are a best guess at what transpired.)

This is quite a remarkable film, the first 40 minutes or so are entirely mundane, as we just watch people go about their usual airport routines, the flight being prepared, the pilots chatting as they walk to the plane, the plane’s crew getting things ready and so on. But there’s this horrible knowledge that every single one of them is going to die.

The film regularly cuts away to various air traffic control centres and NORAD, as information and evidence start to come in that suggest a coordinated series of hijackings are underway.

In many regards it’s hard to ‘enjoy’ a film like this, I spent most of its runtime consumed by a sense of mounting dread, hoping that somehow it wouldn’t end the way I knew it would.

Highly recommended - 915/1000

http://www.reelviews.net/reelviews/united-93

Quote:
United 93 is a masterful motion picture. Its impact stays with the viewer; its images are hard to shake. In the years since 9/11, much of what happened that day has become ingrained in our culture. We have absorbed it. United 93 picks the scab and brings back the freshness of the wound. But the passage of time allows us to see the events of this film in a larger context. I do not use the phrase "must see" lightly (and there are those for whom this film may be too painful). Seeing United 93 represents a difficult film-going experience, and one that should not be undertaken lightly. It's hard to imagine anyone not being affected on some level by United 93. But the value of what this picture imparts is worth the challenge of sitting through it. When I compile my Top 10 list of films for 2006, United 93 will be on it, and almost certainly close to the top.

Last night I watched BAD DAY FOR THE CUT which has turned up on Netflix, it's a revenge thriller set in Northern Island. (The writer and director are Irish, as are most of the cast.)

This is a bloody fantastic film. Plot wise it's a somewhat routine revenge thriller but that really doesn't do it justice. It's got flavours of Blue Ruin, In Bruges and Dead Man's Shoes about it but isn't a knock-off of any of them.

Rotten Tomatoes summarises it thusly:

Quote:
In this witty and ultra-violent thriller, a mild-mannered farmer sets off on a bloody quest for vengeance after his elderly mother is murdered. As he tracks her killers through the criminal underworld of Belfast, he begins to realize that there was a darker side to his beloved mother--and to himself.

It's not unremittingly grim by any stretch of the imagination, although it does get rather violent and sweary. (There are some genuinely funny moments in there.)

The protagonist is brilliantly played by a chap called Nigel O'Neill and the baddies are splendid, including an occasionally unhinged Susan Lynch.

The whole thing is just really well done, TBH I wasn't much in the mood to do anything last night after a testing week at work and I was bastard tired, but this film grabbed me from the off and didn't let me go until the credits rolled.

Do yourself a favour and spin this film up on Netflix.

925/1000

NOTE - The trailer is arguably a bit spoilery, I'd say just watch the film. Did I mention it's really good? Watch this film!

Dunno it sounds OK to me:

"The Equalizer 2 is a reasonably well-written and (of course) beautifully acted serving of geriatric-virility violence porn, with Washington on the trail of Leo's assassins."

Quote:
"It's slick, violent, fast-paced, well acted but by-the-numbers summer fare."

It's got Friday night film after a generous amount of spritzers written all over it.

Denzel is always watchable and I like seeing him kick ass. (See also, Man On Fire.)

The Equalizer 2 - 'This time it's perfectly balanced' is heading to UK cinemas soon.

I very much enjoyed the first one but the UK release will once again be suffering from cuts, so you might want to 'import' a US release or wait for the STRONGER HARDER UNCUT release in the UK, if we ever get one.

Annoyingly, and as is usually the case, it's being cut for a 15, an uncut 18 was available.

Last night I watched 'SWEET VIRGINIA' which stars Shane Punisher. It is on Netflix.

Shane plays a motel manager in a small town. A bad man comes to the town and kills three people, he's staying at the motel Shane runs, and it turns out people are connected to each other in some surprising ways which leads to INCIDENTS and THINGS HAPPENING.

I really liked this film, it's tight as a drum and gets the whole lot done in 90 minutes. Also Imogen Poots is in it and I fancy her.

Shane is his usual excellent self and plays against type somewhat, the bad guy is convincingly creepy but not overdone, and the supporting cast are excellent (and fanciable).

I hereby RECOMMEND this film and suggest you watch it.

Tonight's film was 'You Were Never Really Here' starring The Phoenix Brother you can't spell the name of without Googling it first (Joaquin), and no one else you've heard of most likely.

It's only 90 minutes long but it's a pretty devastating, difficult watch.

(It's directed by the lady who also directed 'We Need To Talk About Kevin')

TBH it's a hard film to like, Joaquin mumbles most of the time and there are all sorts of flashbacks and semi-dream sequences occurring on a regular basis, along with jump cuts to things that don't appear contextually relevant.

Even the basic story synpopsis is pretty grim (here's my version):

Joaquin plays a traumatized veteran who tracks down young missing girls traded and sold for sex. When he catches the baddies he kills them ruthlessly with a hammer. Then he takes a job that gets him close to the great and the good, and what little world he has is threatened, whilst devastating memories from his own past repeatedly cause him nightmares, be he awake or asleep.

I'll let the Wikipedia review summary do the job here. I watched the film twice, as once I'd worked it all out I wanted to see it again with everything contextualised.

This isn't a particularly easy watch, but I'd say it's worth it.

Quote:
Joseph Walsh for The Skinny gave the film a rating of five stars out of five and states "You Were Never Really Here is a brutal, punishing watch, but every minute is a masterclass in filmmaking. It's like a one-inch-punch to the gut, winding you from the start and giving you no respite. This exquisite examination of suffering will leave you staggering from the cinema".[18] Matt Bobkin for Exclaim! gave the film a 9 out of 10 score, describing it as "dizzying, horrifying and utterly compelling."[19]

Sheila O'Malley of RogerEbert.com gave the film 4 stars, saying that the film "is a taut and almost unbearably intense 90-minutes, without an ounce of fat on it. Ramsay doesn't give you a second to breathe."[16] Guy Lodge for Variety said Ramsay may be the world's "greatest working filmmaker", and called it "astonishing... a stark, sinewy, slashed-to-the-bone hitman thriller far more concerned with the man than the hit."[17]

I watched OUT OF SIGHT last night, I have never seen it before even though it is quite old (1998).

It is directed by Steven Sodabread and has George Clooney, Ving Rhames and Jennifer Lopez in it.

I guess if you were giving it a genre you'd say it's a sort of crime-caper action film with some comedy and romance and suspense.

It's all very well done with a nice Sodabread slickness and efficiency, and it's beautifully shot, there's nothing about the film you could really criticise for being done 'wrong', but even so I wasn't blown away by it.

If you're after some very competent but ultimately lightweight fun, you could do a lot worse.

Hardass woman ties everyone up because she doesn’t know who to trust. Bleurgh. Somehow only those people who want to die are allowed to go wandering in the shimmer. Bleurgh. Self harming gal (who gets the bare minimum of dialogue) just disappears into/in to foilage. Bleurgh. None of the characters are particularly well fleshed out apart from Kiera Knightly. And some of the CGi is a bit dodgy. The 4 day mind wipe at the beginning is never revisited, explained or even has any impact on the film whatsoever. The exposition and, in particular, line about the shimmer refracting DNA made me pick up my phone. Bleurgh.

And that JJ Abrams was allowed to do multiple cameos as giant lens flares.

5/10

ANNIHILATION:

Hmmm I thought it was much better than that TBH, and will give it 860/1000

Most of the stuff you criticise there was covered to my mind, I really liked it. There was quite a lot of the feel of 'Under The Skin', which is entirely a good thing.

Last night I watched 'THE POST' which stars Tom Hanks as Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep as Oscar Contender. Saul Goodman is in it too but he's now a newspaper reporter and not a lawyer. The film is directed by Steven Spielberg who made Shaving Ryan's Privates and Jaws.

THE POST has been described as 'timely' which means that its runtime is less than two hours including the credits. Also it has parallels to the Trump presidency and his attitude towards the press, which we learned when Trump said you can 'grab woman by the pressy and they love it'.

In the film Tom and Oscar live in a world called the 1970s when people were very excited about newspapers and a bad President called Dick Nixon who was sending Apple Pie Americans to die in Vietnam, which is full of jungles and Communists.

One newspaper prints government secrets, and Nixon stops them, so the newspaper that Tom and Oscar work for have to decide to print more secrets or not, but if they do they might go to jail. Tom is very keen but Oscar is more reluctant because she is a woman in a man's world. Then by the end of the film she is all steely and gives the men what for and this is inspirational, and reminded me of Margaret Thatcher who also starred in a film with Oscar in it.

There are some good bits where you see how newspapers used to be made with massive whirly machines before computers were invented and we all started watching cat videos on the internet.

Overall I enjoyed this film and think it is probably as good as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but it would have benefited from having Richard Dreyfuss in in it.

Yes I covered Icarus last year, a truly splendid documentary. Genuinely exciting too, simply because the facts of the case are so absolutely batshit crazy.

https://www.beexcellenttoeachother.com/ ... 44#p962344

Quote:
ICARUS - A dude called Bryan Fogel set out to make a documentary about doping in professional sport, as he'd been disturbed by high-profile cases such as Lance Armstrong getting away with it forever with apparent ease. The documentary was to be about nothing more than him entering the premier amateur cycle race in the world (think an amateur Tour De France) whilst doping, and getting away with it.

However, during the course of his preparations he's put in contact with a Russian doctor to help him with his doping regime, and ends up blowing the lid on decades of Russian doping in sport, that culminated with Russia nearly getting banned outright from the 2016 Rio Olympics. (And includes astonishing insider reveals of how Russia cheated at the Sochi Winter Olympics with shenanigans that seem to belong in a James Bond film.)

What elevates this film is that Fogel and Rodchenkov are both likeable characters, Rodchenkov in particular is a documentarian's dream, I've seen him described as 'eccentric, garrulous, frequently shirtless, and immensely charming', and it's often easy to forget you're actually watching a documentary.

It takes a serious turn for the sinister when some people involved with the State-sponsored programme start 'dying', and Rodchenkov decides to leave Russia or end up the same way himself, and once in the States agrees to turn witness to blow the whole thing apart.

A truly fascinating watch.

After the intensity of Three Billboards I fancied something a little bit easier going last night so I had a browse through Amazon Prime's movie list selection, (which appears to be better than it was), and settled on a nonsensical 2013 film called 'Escape Plan' with Arnie and Sly in it. (There are also a few other familiar faces in there, such as Vincent D'Onofrio, Vinnie Jones, Sam Neill and Jim Caviezel.)

Sly is a genius sort of 'prison breaker' character, who is employed by various authorities to test the structural security of the world's toughest prisons (no, really). He agrees to take 'one last job' to test the security of a new ultra-secret high-tech facility that officially doesn't exist.

But what's this? A double-cross! And Sly finds himself genuinely incarcerated in a prison that none of his friends know the location of. Will he be able to break out? (Spoiler alert. Yes.)

Also imprisoned in the facility is Arnie, and he seems to want to get to know Sly right from the start. After being suspicious of him at first, Sly and Arnie must work together to orchestrate their escape, as the vicious warden (played by Caviezel and assisted by his psychopathic hard-man (inevitiably played by Jones)) seeks to break their bodies and minds.

If all this sounds utterly preposterous then yes, it absolutely is, but for what it is, it works.

This is basically an 80s popcorn movie, Sly and Arnie are on good form and work well together on the screen. The script is solid, the acting is fine, the budget was sufficient to make it all look nice and shiny, the action is well choreographed and the directing is assured. It's not massively violent (Cert 15, R in the States) but there are crunchy fight scenes and blood flies when people get shot. (The action does have that jump-cut editing style and a lot of obvious body double shots, which is understandable considering the two protagonists have a combined age of three million years.)

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a great film, but it knows what it is, and it does it well. If you want a fun action movie that doesn't test the old grey matter too much (or indeed at all), this is the film for you.

700/1000 - So exactly as good as Baby Driver.

EDIT - Oh and the 2008 Rambo film is amazeballs of course, but for very different reasons.

I rewatched RAMBO FIRST BLOOD last night for the millionth time, it's such a fantastic film, and in many regards highlights why modern films are so shit and old films are so good. (Yes I appreciate that's a massive generalisation but it was the thought that crossed my mind as the opening scenes played out.)

Within 5 minutes it establishes character and context, we immediately sympathise with our protagonist and understand that the antagonist is not evil, but nonetheless is at odds with the goals of Rambo.

The opening escape and chase scene is a timeless action setpiece, and leads into a taut, beautifully paced and filmed mid-section, until Rambo returns to destroy the town that hurt him, before finally breaking down, and Stallone shows to my mind that he has some proper acting chops.

I've probably watched this film 20-25 times or more over the years, and can quite happily recite the entire script.

Do not confuse First Blood with the second and third films, which are awful. First Blood however remains a genuine classic.

Yeah I mentioned this when it first came on Netflix. Amazing film. Reminded me of After Hours more than anything, just a crazy trip through the night that doesn't let up for a moment.

Oh sorry I missed that, I did do a search for 'good time' before posting to see if there was a previous comment about it but that's not a great search term and basically brought back everything.

Quick shout out for 'GOOD TIME' which has just appeared on Netflix and I watched last night.

I'm still recovering from the flu so you get a lazy review.

It has that chap out of Twilight in it who is very good actor.

Quote:
'Good Time' is a prime example of what the cynical or the uninterested might dismiss as “feel-bad cinema” — low budget, kitchen-sink realism about unpleasant people in worse situations. It also happens to be one of the most uncompromising movies I’ve seen all year: vibrant and desperate and alive, it’s a work hanging on by its fingernails. If you lament the loss of that gutter ferocity with which filmmakers like Martin Scorsese once walked the Earth, brother, here’s your cinematic B-12 shot.

That's such an incredibly kinetic opening, especially in the uncut version.

Baby Driver is so consumed with being delighted at how clever its opening sequence is that I found it rather annoying. (And yes I did 'get it'.)

I watched Jigsaw. It’s terrible.

If you must watch a Saw film just watch 1 & 2 and pretend they decided to end it there.

3 was pretty good and from memory 6 was quite clever and surprising in delivering a sort of social message about the health care industry in the USA, 4 and 5 I'm hard pushed to remember anything much positive about though.

1 and 2 are indeed the best.

If only there were other ways to watch a movie than with bits cut out and lots of advert breaks.

I didn't know watching films on normal telly was still a thing that happened. Or normal telly, for that matter.

Except for old people.

Dr Zoidberg should show it to Helen's sister's step-mum.

Are there spoilers in the review? I haven't watched the film yet either due to Hearthstone and fruit machine emulation.

I'm about halfway through Bright. It's... okay. Some heavy handed race relations allegories, and largely carried by Mr Smith.

That's fine by me, Will Smith is awesome.

Bright’s reviews have been incredibly bad. And the trailer looked bad. And I say this as someone who played Shadowrun for many years, so I’m down with urban fantasy.

The Guardian gave it 3/5, by all accounts they tried to cram too much into not enough running time.

Since it's on Netflix I'll give it a watch, I like Will Smith anyway.

Bright was directed by David Ayer, who directed End of Watch.

I very much liked End Of Watch too, I will watch Bright soon.

Blimey, what a creepy story, if you really want to get freaked out, watch the elevator video of her.

1m57s for the skin-crawly part.

Watched 'HACKSAW RIDGE' last night which has turned up on Netflix.

Crazy old Mel may not be the nicest chap in the world but by crikey he makes a good film.

It's the (mostly) true(ish) story of Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector who signed up for the US Army in WWII but refused to bear arms or kill an enemy, and then ended up getting loads of medals for being super-brave and saving plenty of soldiers. Inbetween these two things he is mocked by his fellow soldiers and superiors and they try to bounce him out for being a crazy and stuff like that, but by the end they all respect him for being courageous and saving all their asses.

I like Mel's directing style (Passion Of The Christ, Apocalypto), and it's very much in evidence here, a strong story, well told with interesting and relateable characters.

I groaned a bit when I saw it was 2h19m long but it whipped by and there's not an ounce of fat on it.

Do be warned the 'horrors of war' are fully in evidence here, so if you're not big on watching human bodies get blown up in all sorts of horrific ways and the aftermath of this carnage, rats eating eyeballs, guts spilling out, heads getting taken apart by heavy fire, soldiers being graphically burned to death with flamethrowers and so on - this may not be for you.

Cert 15 but it gets a 'war film pass' from the BBFC 'cause it's like history and shit, in any other context it'd be an 18.

Great film and I recommend it.

885/1000 - The Germans were definitely responsible for this war.

Digital pricing can be fucking stupid. I wanted Tim Roth's film 'THE WAR ZONE' which Amazon had available to purchase or rent digitally, both of these options were more expensive than having them send a physical DVD to my house.
