It's not particularly difficult but it's levels don't outstay their welcome and the fishing rod mechanic is genuinely fun to use. It's also lovely to look at with a really nice art style.

It used myp for me and I genuinely believed it was him. This led to much confusion when I asked him what he was gibbering about and he had no idea what I was going on about.

Bits of level furniture are colour coded and can only be interacted with by each character--though they can move and stand on other and--so using these properties is the meat of the game. It's well presented and easy to control with the only criticism being that it's a bit too easy to breeze through it's 60 levels.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
the ending just fades way when I was expecting something more. I genuinely assumed that you'd see the death/transformation of whatsername as a way of revealing Ellie's immunity to her in an incredibly bitter-sweet way but nope, it just fades away.
My issues with the combat are well documented and in the final encounter I initally hit the same wall I sometimes hit in the main game (after pretty much breezing through the whole rest of the game). I stopped battering myself against it and watched a video of someone else playing part of it just to get some idea for techniques then went back and restarted the entire encounter. This time through I genuinely enjoyed it, despite still getting murdered a couple of times, and was almost sad when it finished. I genuinely didn't realise that you could thin most of the herd out with silent knife kills, or use the brick/bottle to stun them first, and after that it was pretty easy. I was worried about using the knife because I seem to remember it being very easily broken in the main game but in the DLC it seemed to last for as long as you want. Indeed I would argue that things become too easy in parts when you realise that (a) setting infected on humans is a total piece of piss and always results in the humans getting wiped out, plus (b) stealth killing infected with the knife is trivial. There's the odd moment when end up in an actual fight and at that point everything goes to shit but it's far from inevitable. And I realise that the gunplay being scrappy and awkward is sort of the point in terms of emulating this world they've built but it's still fucking awful and annoying to actually play.

It was longer than the previous one but the puzzles were less logical in places, the graphics were much worse and it required pixel perfect tapping in some cases to interact with objects; so something you thought was just a bit of background turned out to be critical when you tapped it for the umpteenth time. Which is a cardinal sin in these type of games and means I won't be playing any more of them from that developer.

54. Escape the Lighthouse: this appeared in the Related Apps section in the Play Store and, inspired by Russ, I gave it a shot. If this is the same game he played then (and I've no idea if it is) it's little wonder he's rattling through them as it had about three easy puzzles and took ten minutes to bang through, hampered only by the shittiness of the interface. The graphical style is really nice but I doubt I'll playing more from the series as it's wasn't a very good example of the genre. ETA: actually I'm pretty sure now it's not from the same series Russ has been playing as they're all of the format "Can You Escape from X" and this wasn't. Also there is an actual "Can You Escape from the Lighthouse" on the Play Store, along with loads similar from the same dev, so I imagine that's the set Russ has been going through. I'll probably give one of those a shot instead now

53. Yellow: a puzzle game for Android where your objective in each of the fifty levels is to turn the screen entirely yellow. Mostly this involves poking, prodding and swiping to work out the mechanic of each level but a few of the levels have obvious mechanics and the challenge is in the actual solution. Good fun either way.

I believe I said, "It also desperately wants to be mentioned in the same breathe as Bastion but the VO guy is no Logan Cunningham and the actual dialogue is pretty lumpen stuff." so I wasn't quite as damning as you but yeah, the voice work certainly did nothing good for the game.

Yeah, you should've used a controller, it was just like walking around in any game with that. I didn't find the exploration at all boring, it was never more than a couple of screens before you'd get to something happening (especially slightly later in the game when the time loops start) and the dialogue kept things moving even then.

Satsuma wrote:
the "interactive scenes" are barely interactive and just require you to tune a radio, so it's got much less interaction than a Tell Tale game

I wouldn't agree with that either. Obviously the TT games have QTEs and this doesn't but if you take those away a TT game is generally just walking around a scene clicking on stuff and choosing dialogue options, the same as Oxenfree. Unless I'm misremembering TT games, it's been a while since I played any (aside from the painfully fucking dull GoT one).

Is the dialog text or speech?

Speech; and very well voice acted speech at that. The main character's voiced by the person that did Snow White in 'The Wolf Among Us' to give an idea of the pedigree. When another character's talking your possible responses (or a summary of them anyway) appear above your head in those speech bubbles you see. You select one of them using one of the controller buttons; or none of them at which point they'll fade away and your character says nothing. Each possible reponse is mapped to a controller button so picking one is not only easy and intuitive but it doesn't stop you moving around or interacting with stuff which makes it a really nice way of modelling the conversation. As in real life you can chat away and still do other stuff. I should've mentioned all this in my original post because it's a really nice feature and is intrinsic in making the near constant dialogue feel like part of the game and not just something to be clicked through.

52. Oxenfree: a group of teenagers spend a night on a deserted island; weird shit ensues. It's part macabre mystery and part Telltale style adventure. You have more freedom than in a Telltale game because the island is an actual environment to be explored, but the actual story moves forward in a linear way. Your dialogue choices inform your treatment by the other characters, and your ending, but I get the sense that the gist of it doesn't change too much. The characters rarely shut up and some other people seemed to find that wearing but I thought the dialogue was generally very well written and the characters deep enough that it was a big positive to me. The ending felt pretty rushed, especially after a decent amount of time was spent setting up the characters and the plot, but that's probably the only real criticism I've got and I really enjoyed this for the few hours it lasted. If you like the idea of the Telltale narrative adventures but would prefer something that gives you a little bit more direct control then this comes highly recommended and I really enjoyed my time with it.

Despite being utterly fucking batshit this is one of the most satisfying and logical games in this genre I've ever played and I made it through the entire thing without ever really getting stuck. The various bizarre machines and fucked up objects all have an internal logic that becomes clear from playing around with them which is really the design goal with these things. Good stuff.

50. Calendula: a puzzle game with a slight horror aesthetic where the puzzle is how to get the game to start. Essentially each level has you fucking around with the options, title screen, credits etc that you'd find in the starting menu of a game to get into the save files. Every time you do that you're treated to an odd little vignette but those are just sideshows and will glitch out to dump you back at the menu screen facing another meta puzzle. I didn't find it that difficult--though I suspect I was lucky in stumbling across a couple of the answers--and it's very short; about an hour depending on your aptitude for these type of things. Overall though Pony Island does a much better job of this concept.

48. Neon Struct: a cyberpunk style stealth game that basically wants to be Deus Ex. The problem is that it's incredibly primitive; the graphics are about as basic as it's possible to get, the sound effects are rubbish, the stealth system is hilariously easy to exploit and the AI is near non-existent. Some part of me still enjoyed going through the game--mentally treating it as an amusing throwback--but I can't recommend it to anyone. The weird thing is how well it was reviewed, which is the reason it was on my list in the first place. Both Eurogamer and RPS had very nice things to say about it but reading their comments again now it's like they're playing a different version of the game from me. As if I'd somehow accidentally downloaded an old alpha version which had been completely overhauled before they touched it. It's all very weird.

The levels are piss easy with hardly any challenge but the bosses can range from pussycats to moderate requiring repeated attempts. They're manageable and if you complete a few of the levels and collect the items before attempting any of the bosses you'll have some decent powers to spam.

I reckon you'll give up before completing it, mind. You've got a pretty low tantrum threshold, right?

I do, yeah, but that doesn't sound too horrendous so I'll give it a shot.

7.2 hours according to Steam; though it will massively depend on how good you are at these types of games of course. There's an optional and slightly more difficult level available per stage (of which there are seven) and that completion time includes knocking all those off as well.

47. The Turing Test: a sci-fi puzzle game that gives you a pseudo-gun with which to work through a load of puzzle rooms while the over-arching story about an AI gone wrong plays out. So, yeah, it's basically Portal. The story is presented straight rather than with any kind of comedy and the central mechanics contain nothing as mind-bending as a portal gun but still, it's clear where it's inspiration came from. That said, it's definitely A Good Game. It looks lovely, doesn't outstay it's welcome and smoothly accomplishes the trick of introducing simple mechanics then ramping up the complexity. It even manages a mid-game reveal that's not only a pretty sweet plot twist but suddenly changes how you look at and interact with the test chambers. The plot itself starts off strong but kind of falls apart at the end--and is mostly told through fucking audio logs because of course it is--but it does the job of framing everything. My only real criticism is that if you've played the Portal games you might find it a bit too easy. It's got a few mechanics in common (light bridges, buttons, etc) but more so because playing Portal just trains your brain so well to parse these kind of challenges. If you just fancy some engaging puzzling, or are usually put off by the difficulty of stuff like Portal, this comes highly recommended. It's also out on all the major platforms so accessible by all.

Yeah, but for the wrong reasons. You don't fear death due to any inherent tension but because the punishment is to get up off the couch and walk over to the PC keyboard so you can redo your lost 'invert Y' settings then sit back down on the couch and redo a load of stuff you've already done. It's not teaching you any lessons or improving your skills, it's just a pain in the arse.

45. ICARUS.1: an exploration type game that sees you as an investigator raking through an empty mining ship to try and work out what happened to the crew. It looks pretty nice and the atmosphere of the abandoned ship is palpable but that's about all the game gets right sadly. The puzzles are barely worthy of the name (find keycard in one room and put it in the keycard slot elsewhere) and are only made at all difficult by the darkness of certain sections of the game making pickups hard to find. It would still be, and sort of was, a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours if not for a load of amateur mistakes increasing the general frustration of the experience. To wit:
  • The voice acting of your companion AI is just a blatant text-to-speech transcript which sounds terrible. The other AI in the game is given a genuine human voice so this is an odd choice.
  • There are no save points at all so you need to either completely finish a chapter or you're starting it again. They're short enough once you work out what you need to do but if you miss something you can be hunting around for a while. Also, there are a couple of instant death sections so you end up genuinely scared of dying purely because it means redoing a load of stuff.
  • Any option changes (e.g. inverting Y) are thrown away whenever you die or start a new chapter which is fucking stupid. This is made worse by the fact that you can do everything in the game with a control pad except enter/leave the pause menu. Grrr.
  • The controls are never mentioned or explained. In the case of jump, use, etc that's not a massive problem but there's a run button hidden on one of the bumpers and some of the platformy bits absolutely required that to work. I spent no small amount of time repeatedly trying a jump because I could get really close so I thought it doable and just finicky. Only eventually did I stumble across the run button and then battered that whole section in my next attempt. There's even a Steam review with someone complaining about being stuck because they can't make a jump, which would be amusing if it wasn't so unnecessary.

44. Layers of Fear + Inheritance DLC: I've played the main game before but enjoyed it at the time and just fancied playing through it again for some reason. Sadly it didn't hold up anywhere near as well the second time round and while certain sections still held my attention a lot of it felt pretty repetitive and trudgey now. Unsurprisingly the DLC was more enjoyable given it's novelty, and there was also more sense of actual branching paths going on. Indeed I looked parts of it up afterwards and there were whole sections and puzzles I never came across which speaks to a certain amount of depth. Taken together this gives it a faintly positive meh/10.

I think I might've played a demo of it or something. I dunno. I was put off with the idea of turn based combat but if it's not actually that hard I'd be happy to get into it for the sake of the comedy. Hmm...

I imagine it's much more affecting if you have kids of your own which might make it a more worthwhile experience in parts, but yeah, the Christian stuff will probably still put you off if you're not religious yourself. I'm not even some crazy hardcore atheist or anything and have no problem with people's faith in general, but in the game I did find myself thinking, "Oh for fuck sake just shut up about it!" pretty quickly.

41. That Dragon, Cancer: For those who've never heard of it, it's essentially the story of the developer's son's battle with, and eventual loss to, cancer. Well, as the kid in question was only five at the time it's actually about the adults in the family and their experience. And given all that, it's a bit of a shame to call it out for being largely a load of balls. Mechanically it's primitive and odd to control even though you're mostly just pointing a character in a direction to advance the story. There are a couple of occasions when it tries to be more of a 'game' (a bizarre kart racing section and a puzzle involving candles that just had me clicking shit randomly until I could proceed) and those parts are arguably even worse as they're not only boring but just seem completely at odds with the subject matter. There are a couple of sections that genuinely take advantage of an interactive medium (e.g. a part where you can move between occupying either of the parents or the attendant medical staff while things are being discussed and 'hear' their internal monologue as bad news is being delivered and processed) and they show a glimmer of a good idea, but aside from that it's really just finding the next thing to click on to move your character through some landscapes. Coming off the back of something like Edith Finch which tells various stories of loss and heartbreak in incredible and moving ways this can't really seem like anything other than boring twaddle. Which is ironic given the very real basis here vs Edith Finch's invented story. The thing is, 'gameplay' aside, I was genuinely quite affected by the family's story in the beginning due largely to the voice work (the developer and his wife playing themselves as far as I know) doing a good job if putting you in the middle of the situation. However, not only is the wife's voice is incredibly grating after a while but about a third of the way through every conversation and line of dialogue becomes about their faith. Obviously I can understand the entire situation throwing up such questions and thoughts for a Christian couple but literally every scene after a certain point is a lengthy pondering on God and, frankly, I couldn't give a fuck so I was left cold by it all.

42. Spate: an indie PC platform game about a detective investigating a disappearance in a ruined and flooded district. Except that the platforming is so low on challenge that it's really more of a 2D walking simulator. Which sounds like a criticism but isn't meant to be; it's only about an hour and a half long and the landscapes you walkthrough are fucking lovely so the time passes very quickly. There's a slightly muddled story about alcoholism and the protagonist's daughter but really I was in it for the visuals and thoroughly enjoyed it on that basis. Probably not for everyone but I was in the right mood for just such a palette cleanser so it was all good. It's also the only game I've ever played to dedicate a controller button entirely to the function 'swig absinthe'.

37. Firewatch: Really good stuff, as noted by pretty much everyone else in the world. It looks lovely--albeit maybe not quite as nice in motion as screenshots would suggest--and is just generally really fun and compelling stuff. The dialogue and voice-acting is the highlight and really brings the two main characters alive; it's genuinely right up there in quality and wouldn't be out of place in any proper TV show of film. Like Henry I think I'd fallen a little bit in love with Delilah by the end of it which is a mark of the quality we're talking about here. If I had a complaint it would be that that the game is actually too short. Like they build this decent sized map and lead you through a few section of it then BAM, it accelerates towards the ending before you know it. I'd really have liked more reasons to explore and even more 'busy work' type missions just to pace things out better and give me more of a reason to exist in the world. I realise you can explore in a free roam mode once you've finished but without any actual gameplay objectives--and with no Delilah to talk to--it would be a hollow experience. It could also be argued that the ending doesn't stand up to the rest of the story but I dunno, I'm a bit on the fence there.
38. The Forgotten Room: Glitch Games have a rep for turning out well put together point-clicky-escapey type games and I usually look forward to their stuff but this one was a bit weak. Unlike their usual form there were a couple of crappy puzzles involved but mostly it's because they've redesigned their interface to make it shit. Using an item means summoning this weird wheel thing then dragging stuff off it into the game world which is fussy and needless. The camera is the worst mis-step though in that to view pictures you've taken you hold the camera icon down for some amount of time then let it go. Aside from the fact that this just slows your interactions down frustratingly you get no feedback as to when you've held the button long enough, so you end up either waiting around for ages to be on the safe side or not holding it long enough and just taking a picture you don't need. Fucking stupid.

36. Submerged: indie PC explore 'em up that sees you hunt through the various buildings that make up a submerged cityin search of stuff to help you heal your injured brother. The graphics have their moments but it's generally not a brilliant looking game; and while the exploration can be relaxing if you're in the right mood it could certainly less charitably be described as repetitve and unchallenging. It's basically the platforming sections of Tomb Raider/Uncharted but with any threat of death removed and repeated multiple times without any real variation.

34. Small Radio Big Televisions: so, this is a weird one. Mechanically, you explore a set of facilities hunting for tapes (i.e. Memorex style blank audio cassettes with labels scrawled on them) then exploring the small vignettes inside each tape for keys (actually glowing green orbs but they're used as keys) that let you access further into the facility. There are mild environmental puzzles to solve and each facility has a couple of tape scrubbers which corrupt the tapes you're carrying and reveal further keys inside them. None of that probably sounds too odd but it's the aesthetic that makes it. Everything is viewed through an odd filter that makes it looks both new and old at the same time. Similarly the sound track is made up of a bunch of hazy dream-like ambient pieces which don't force their way into your perception but are instantly noticeable when they change or stop. This extends to the tapes themselves which, in their vanilla form, are usually clean-ish and normal looking scenes (e.g. a mountain, a forest, a river) but which are warped to varying degree by the scrubber to become weird and twisted versions of themselves. There's an over-arching story which is alluded to in cut scenes between levels but it's not fleshed out enough to become particularly meaningful to my mind. The game itself is slightly let down by the fact that in a couple of parts you waste lots of time just navigating the levels and the gameplay itself isn't strong enough to stand that but it only happened a couple of times and not enough to colour my overall positive experience with the game. If you're looking for something short and weird with a unique aesthetic then it's definitely a goer; and currently very cheap in the Adult Swim Humble Bundle.

31. The Ghost Town
32. Vulture Island: what initially looks like a standard platformer turns out to actually be a puzzle game in disguise, with all the levels available instantly and accessible through a Mario style overworld map right from the start. You then need to guide your three characters through each level picking up items and carrying out quests to unlock aspects of the other levels, with this sort of back and forth gameplay making up the bulk of the game. Some of the puzzles make an odd use of collected items (for instance, I don't think bug spray is generally used to knock down walls) but you're generally given enough info to work out how to progress from talking to NPCs. It looks good, plays well and is definitely one of the more fun mobile games I've played in a while. Which isn't a massive shock given it's made by the same studio that did the brilliant Traps n' Gemstones.
33. Until Dawn: brilliant stuff; I'll post some more chat in the relevant thread.

It does some interesting stuff with environments that I enjoyed but overall I'd say it's more creepy than outright scary. Definitely not as fucked up as PT.

29. Psychonauts: Rhombus of Ruin: as is seemingly typical of most PSVR games this was short (about two hours) and pretty easy in terms of the puzzles but, as is also typical, it's a very compelling and fun experience. It's one of the nicest looking PSVR games I've played I'd say and it's entertaining enough that, submerged in the headset, I didn't notice the passage of time at all until I finished it. It also had probably one of the best setups I've come across in terms of giving an in-universe excuse for why you can't move around or interact directly with the stuff you're looking at which was a nice touch. So, yeah, very highly recommended if you're a Psychonauts fan or you see it on sale or you just don't care about the slightly high price tag.

I actually gave it a shot and uninstalled it over lunch time because I thought it was pretty clunky and nowhere near as logical in it's puzzles.

The art style is simple but effective (putting me in mind a bit of of stuff like The Talos Principle and The Witness) and the puzzles are logical to a fault. Highly recommended, especially for Russ given his recent proclivity.

27. Assassins Creed: Syndicate: I haven't touched an AC game since giving up on the original one after only a couple of hours way back in the day so I came to this pretty clean and, frankly, I fucking loved it. It still has issues with the controls at certain times which can be frustrating but you learn to live with and work round those pretty quickly. It's also slightly repetitive in that way only modern open world games can be but I don't really mind that as long as I don't play many of them in a short period. Those quibbles aside it's just flat out great fun; stalking and stealthily murdering a load of dudes never really gets old and with the grappling hook they've added for this game a lot of the set pieces basically turn into Batman Arkham style encounters which I'm absolutely fine with. The plot's interesting enough (although all the meta stuff goes completely over my head as I've no idea what's going on with the wider story) and most of the characters are well written and engaging. So, yeah, good stuff all round.
