The engines in these cars do use a bit of oil, which is normal (my Type-R was a generation ahead of myp's but the engines are effectively identical). I just put half a litre in every three-four months to keep it up to the top ... |

... much bulletproof apart from occasional oil leaks on some (and only minor) - they don't have the same level of problems that the other big V8 BMW engines have. The one I've just taken delivery of is on 139K but you really couldn't tell, it's still just like driving a big armchair on wheels. |

How quickly did you shut it off when it went? From my limited research the Clios use interference engines so if the cam belt goes there's a good chance the engine has stuffed itself, but if you were quick to shut it down it might have limited the damage. I coasted to a ... |

What's your budget? The previous generation VAG 2.0 TDI engines in a golf, Leon or Octavia will get close to 50mpg when driven sensibly and 9ish seconds to 60 if not.
The current generation ones are 10% better and 10% faster. |
