Useful post on the UCL Constitution Unit's blog about the current situation in Northern Ireland.
Having Sinn Fein as the largest party after the May election, meaning they get to be First Minister, would be as fascinating a development as the Ian Paisley/Martin McGuiness love-in of a decade ago. |

Hello all. For sake of blog content and organise my own thoughts as a weather nerd I thought I'd post this ramble about a developing situation in the US. This one is Hurricane Ida, which for a while looked to be a potential Katrina part II. It's a bad hurricane and there's a long way to go before la... |

Whilst I'm thinking about the Union today, it's worth noting that the Constitution Unit at UCL have just released their report on how a border poll in Northern Ireland could happen and how it should be organised, if you fancy a preview of a future season. This is one of those things that might appear minor in the grand scheme of things but consistent misjudgements like this make it easier for backbench grumbles to turn into something more troubling for a PM. Not wanting to be facetious at all, but does one need to watch any star trek before this? I've watched none (apart from the weird bit with whales 30 years ago) Yes, but you definitely don’t need to watch all of it. Another Constitution Unit blog post , on the hard truths surrounding any border poll in Northern Ireland. Heh, yes I've heard their argument that the assent is only on the advice of ministers so could be withheld. I'm not sure on this but haven't really read up on that - my instinct is that assent is a personal power done by the Crown as the one person third chamber of the "Crown in Parliament"... |

Here's a piece on the Consitution Unit's blog about how the 'narrative' of devolution has changed in the twenty years since the first Holyrood elections.
