For six and a half years (since we moved into this house basically), we've had a spare washing machine.
The reason for this is simple, the last place we lived in was rented and was unfurnished, it had a fitted kitchen with a dishwasher and a fridge unit, but there was no washing machine or fridge freezer, so we had to buy both when we moved in.
When we bought this house it came complete with white goods, so we left the fridge freezer behind in the rented house (it wasn't a very good one), but brought the washing machine with us (as it was a nice one), even though this house already had a combi washer-dryer installed.
So for six and a half years that washing machine has just sat in the kitchen and done nothing, as the washing machine that was already in the house has done sterling service. In the back of my mind I've always figured having a spare isn't such a bad thing in case the one that was already here ever breaks - but it never has.
A couple of weeks ago one of my mates said his washing machine was on the blink, so I said to him we had a spare one that he could take away for a modest amount of cash, 'It's just been sat there doing nothing for over six years'.
We agreed on £70, I helped him get it into the boot of his car, and off it went to his house, where he installed it and it worked fine.
SEVEN FUCKING DAYS LATER, our washing machine breaks.
Got a new combi washer dryer coming on Tuesday, £540 including delivery and installation, and disposal of the old one.
For fuck's sake.
Did you pay in pound coins?
