Who wants to play a game?

So, RLLMUK. It's a forum, a lot bigger than this one. I know there's a few people here who are regulars on there, too. RLLMUK does some things well, and some things badly, much like anywhere else.

One thing about it that I have found enthralling is the fact that they run a regular game of MafiaScum, which I've been hooked on reading over the last few months.

MafiaScum, for those who don't know, is a game that can be played online on a forum, and has anywhere from 10-30 players, though the ones that seem to work best are those in the mid-teens. Each player has a role, which is secret from everyone else (PMd to them by the narrator after randomly selecting who's who). There are (in the basic rules) mafia players and town players. The mafia players all know who each other are, but the town players don't know who's who.

Basically the town has to ascertain, by discussion and deduction, who the mafia players are, and try to kill them - the town can agree by majority vote to string one person up per night, at which point they find out that person's role.

There are more specialised roles, too - ones that can investigate other people to find out information about their role, ones who can kill people, ones who can prevent others from killing, ones who can recruit people into the mafia, etc.

So, by 'daytime', the town all discuss what's been going on, and try and ascertain who are the guilty ones. Accusations and counter-accusations fly, and at the end of the day, hopefully a decision is reached on who to string up. The thread is then locked, and 'nighttime' begins. During the night, people with a special role can nominate who they will kill/protect/investigate etc. In the morning, the results of all the night actions are revealed and play continues.

The town aim to wipe out the mafia, and the mafia aim to wipe out the town. The game ends when one or the other is not going to be able to win.

More information here.

So, does anyone think that this would be a laugh, and that we could get enough people together to give it a go? We'd be looking for about 15 people, who would have time to check on here regularly for a period of about two weeks (Each 'day' tends to last about 48 hours, so you don't need to be on the board the whole time, just regularly enough to participate in discussion).
Christ that sounds complicated. If someone can explain it to my simple brain in simple terms though, preferably in 3 small bulletpoints, I'll happily attempt to participate.

I'm 26, so I'll be rubbish at it.
::You live in a town along with some other people
::Some of them are bad guys, and you don't know who
::As time goes on, people get bumped off, other people accuse people of being bad guys, and stuff
::Try to work out who the bad guys are, and bump them off!
let's do this, people!
I'll give it a shot, although I'm not sure I get it.
I'm totally up for this, but I know it will make me procrastinate massively. As such, it's been put on the list of "things to do after I've written my thesis."

Sorry.
I DEMAND TO BE A FISHERMAN WITH A SHADY PAST
I will play.

I don't really know what is going on, but I like games.

is this a bit like 'murder in the dark'?

:)
Psst, wanna buy some fish?
This sounds a little too much like my life as it is.

I'll join in, although probably not this week if it starts that soon, as I am presently too busy lying in a foetal position in a pretty futile bid to quell the pain of a thoracic infection. Anything remotely exciting would be a bad idea right now.

I will practice my brooklyn wiseguy vernacular until further notice.

Actually yes, yes it is!

It won't start this week. I'd need to work out if there's enough interest, then get people to sign up to get accurate numbers, then work out how to run it before it would start.
I'm up for it, although I don't get it either.

If MaliA gets to be a fisherman with a shady past, I want to be an embittered accountant bent on bloody revenge.
ROLL UP! ROLL UP!

GOT SOME LOVELY FISH HERE!

GOT COD AND BASS AND TURBOT AND PIKE AND MACKERAL AND POLLOCK AND URCHINS AND STARFISH!

ROLL UP ROLL UP!
I'll play.

Sounds interesting...count me in...
I have no idea what this is, but I wish to join in.

See how easily led I am by peer groups?
Being serious for a second, I'd like to give this a shot.
I'll have a go

Give me cash Chris.

Everyone, tell Chris to give me cash.
See also: The Big Bag of Money Goblin.

Everyone else has to be doing it too, CG. Once you've convinced a chunk of the forum to give you cash, I may wish to join in for fear of being left out of the Kool Gang.
I suggest y'all start off with the similar, simpler game Werewolf before you try this Mafia thing.
Ah, Mafia. Greatest parlour game of them all.

Never played it online, but wasted plenty of evenings over the years playing it in real life.
Chris, I did the other day send CG a wad of cash through a bank transfer (seriously!)

Your turn.

I personally don't think Werewolf is any simpler than vanilla MafiaScum.
SKATE!

LOVELY SKATE!

I can see the image, MR STUPID INTERNET SETTINGS.
I don't understand the description, but I'm pretty much always around on weekdays, so I'll try it.

I'll just have to remember to check the forum at weekends.

It's fairly standard practice to have an extended 'day' over weekends.

We can't. It's just a banner saying "please do not STEAL OUR IMAGES, YOU FILTHY STEALER" from Gutenberg.

I sincerely hope that it's Project Stever Gutenberg and not the book one. How dare you. How DARE you.
Oh, how odd that they let me look at my pilfered bandwidth.

Fixed as attachment.
Hehe, sounds fun, I'll join.

Damn it, I'm rubbish at this.
another who has no idea what the fuck it is but will play anyway.
I too wish to register some sort of interest in whatever might be going on in this thread.
I wish to play this rather lovely game, and supect the rules will become clearer once we are all allocated roles.

Yeah, you're most likely right there.

Based on the enthusiasm (of sorts) I'll leave this thread until Friday for signups (I'll post a list of those who've signed up this evening), and aim to start Tuesday or Wednesday next week.
