Oh my god, no. I can’t imagine posting something like that. :s

No, turns out it was rubbish and I was just going to say Darwin was due to bed in 20 minutes but the updates would likely mean you couldn’t play until tomorrow. Hold on, that’s not funny. There was a funny bit to it.

Anyway, happy second birthday to Russell’s PS3. Sorry you’ve only been switched on about three times.

It’s ok, it’s normally quite fast. Darwin will be asleep with an hour now so then I’ll put it on and see what the damage is.

Ah...hubris.
Darwin came running through while I was getting his room ready to projectile vomit all over his newly washed sheets so bed was an hour later than normal. Still, only a 347MB system update and now the game needs to install I guess.

I didn’t expect it as I said above, but I had hoped for something more exciting.

The fight with the fifth colossus is still epic!

The whooshing and the sound of the spray as the bird blasts upwards over the still lake as you rocket into the air on the back of this colossus is still immense. The new particle effects are great too.

Quick rundown:

1) Graphics: excellent. It looks beaut although I think it loses something over the PS2 original in parts. The heavy transition effect from dark to light areas is massively reduced and that’s a shame. The collosi look brilliant though. The fur and hair effect is terrific. Bearded Bloke is my fave as he bends down to get a good look at you before you climb up his thick chin wig like a monkey.

2) Music: Still the best soundtrack to any game ever. Just beautiful.

3) SoundFX: Exactly as you remember them but there’s more. One wooded area sounds particularly lively when it really shouldn’t. It doesn’t look and sound as dead and desolate as it used to in my head, this is a bad thing.

4) Camera/Frames: The frame rate is solid and above 10 FPS of the OG, thank Christ. But for all the talk of modernising the controls the sodding camera is the same as I remember it: it doesn’t like you touching it at all. Much like TLG it wants to give you the most cinematic view in frame but sometimes you want it to just let you have control so you can look at a distant tree or something. It’s a shame they didn’t allow you to switch between a free camera and the semi-free one. Big oversight.

5) Gameplay: it’s the same. That is to say it’s one of the best game ever made.

I didn’t realise that the PS4 Pro in performance mode runs the game at 60FPS. I’ve tried the cinematic mode at 30FPS at 4K but you can’t beat the buttery smooth 60FPS. Definitely the premo way to play.

I started this last night!

It looks beautiful!

I can't get out of the atrium with the stone idols! My horse won't walk forwards, only backwards.

I suspect it may be a record for least progress made after starting a game.

As you exit the temple hold your sword aloft in the light. Move your sword around until there’s a beam showing the direction of where you need to go. Go there. Oh, by the way, it’s directly in front of you.

Horse: you have to press triangle to kick her on (is that the proper term?) once to get her to walk, again to go faster and so on till she's going at top speed. The key thing to remember is you don't control Agro, you control Wander who is riding Agro. This is very important later on.

Where to go: go into a sunlit area, press R1 to raise your sword, and it will point the direction to your next target.

I forgot how much of a brilliant experience this game is. You can certainly see the influence it had on certain later games (Dark Souls, I'm looking at you!)

And yes, the first time you get airborne is one of the most epic moments in gaming history.

Cheers, I just did all that. Died at the first colossus. Got to the top of his bonce and appeared to be unable to hurt him.

1) Stab the glowing weak spots
2) They might have more than one weak spot.
3) Do big stabs (press the button and wait I think then press it again)
4) If you’re doing big stabs and his life bar isn’t going any further there’s another weak spot to stab. Oh and the glowing weak spot stops glowing an’ all.
5) Stab the weak spots and it falls over.

If you can get to the top of the first colossuseseses head you keep hold of the fur with R2, press Square to raise sword, then tap Square again to stab. Keep doing this until it’s dead.

Had first go tonight and stopped after 2nd colossus so I didn’t whiz through it. Remember doing the same the first time I played it.

I'd forgotten how much colossus 16 sucks. It's not even that interesting. It's a big rocket launcher turret with an assault course in front of it.

Hmm, I only saw the one weak spot near his ankle, which I stabbed till he knelt down. And then I clambered up to his head, where there was a blue spot, which I couldn't seem to stab.

Perhaps I missed other weak spots on the way.

Clearly my failure is the product of my own ineptitude, but the controls are a bit... shit, aren't they? He doesn't seem to jump when I want him to jump. He doesn't stab when I want him to stab. Is there an element of timing one's button presses?

It's a hauntingly beautiful game though, and I look forward to conquering those big bastards (my wife, rather astutely, was quick to ask "Why the fuck are you attacking it?")

You can wave your glowing sword laser over his body to reveal the weak spots. The one on his calf isn’t a weak spot to destroy as such, it just makes him kneel down as you found out.

You do need to time your button presses for big stabs to take off the most energy.

Thanks for the pointers folks. I have double Colossussed. I think I was being a bit button mashy previously.
