This was one of the titles mentioned at PSX last week , from Housemarque (creators of Resogun / Super Stardust) and Eugene Jarvis (creator of Defender / Robotron / Smash TV)

http://www.housemarque.com/games/nexmachina/

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016- ... ex-machina

Quote:
We've capture four minutes of furious firing from Resogun dev Housemarque's new game, Nex Machina.

Watch as we clumsily blast our way around the top-down twin-stick shooter, faring rather badly against the trampling horde of enemies chasing us.

Nex Machina was announced at PlayStation Experience this past weekend. It's a collaboration with Eugene Jarvis, whose Defender and Robotron: 2084 arcade games helped birth this entire industry. No pressure.

Housemarque's Resogun was a standout PlayStation 4 launch title in 2013, much in the same way Super Stardust HD was for PlayStation 3 in 2007. In other words: Housemarque delivers the goods.

Nex Machina is due out on PS4 next year.

I was going to do the same last week but then I figured it would be a given for PS+ at some point. Which feels stingy given it's only a tenner, but I'm disgruntled that pretty much every "good" game that's come out on PS+ in the last year or so is one I already own.

Holy Jesus Fuck yes please.

Mrs T has just started a job that involves working away a couple of nights a week so I think I have just just found the thing to keep me busy/distracted while she is away.

And when she's back actually. Bollocks to her this looks awesome.

I had a 'quick go' on this last night. 90 minutes later my protesting eyes made me give up.

It's really intense becasue there's a relentless pace to clearing out a level where you are looking to rescue humans, find secrets, pick up power ups and destroy enemies while staying alive and trying to rack up a massive score. The minute you kill that last enemy it's onto the next room so you can't just blast away with gay abandon apart from ealier in the level.

I'm playing it through on Rookie and that is already insane - I dread to think what the other difficulties look like.

Overall if Robotron, Smash TV, Resogun are the kind of things you like, this is the kind of thing you will *really* like.

All the bananas out of 1000

I played some more of this at the weekend and yet again got into a position where tearing myself away was unfeasibly difficult. Each time I finish playing I just want to dive immediately back in and save more humans or find more secrets or try a different secondary weapon. It's a grab bag of tricks and every single one of the tricks works.

I realise the whole twin stick, 2d nature of the the game is always going to be something that will appeal to my primitive gaming sensibilities but prior to Nex Machina I had been trudging through free twin stick shooter Alienation because I thought it scratched that itch.

Looking back with hindsight it's clear with Alienation I would play it to see if the game would get better, with Nex Machina I boot it up to see if I can get better.

just bought uit too, on basis of this sentence in the EG review (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017- ... ina-review)

"One night, in the dark of a Finnish winter, Housemarque summoned the devil. And the devil was Eugene Jarvis."

@trousers agreed, alienation just bored me after 5 mins.. but i kept playing a bit afterwards (because i did like playing with my daughter in coop)

not had time yet for a serious game..

Does this have local co-op?!

I've been playing a fair bit of Alienation with my boy and while it's enjoyable it does have plenty of meh.

The PS Plus thing was my worry as well but I have the patience of a 6 year old child and the salary of a middle aged company director. What could possibly go wrong there? Oh look a massive backlog of games I haven't played. Ever.

I also figured I would rather throw the money at them to encourage them to make more things like this rather than pick it up next year as a freebie.

Yes it does, but sadly no online co-op.

I've *almost* done a full run through on a single credit on the easiest difficulty now - died on the last boss and then killed him about 30 seconds later.
There's a lot of hidden stuff I've not found yet though so plenty of room to improve on the score.

Managed to 1CC it last night on Rookie.

Having played the entire thing now and had a few goes in Arena mode I feel like I have barely scratched the surface and it's a game I've ostensibly "completed". I fucking love it when games do that to me.

Dr Z I have added you on PSN - id on that is Trousermang

By the absolute narrowest of margins.

After that though I wanted to play it immediately again thereafter because it's so pure in its execution.

I really liked Resogun and SuperStardust but this feels like it's been put together with so much care and attention it makes them look almost slapdash by comparison.

Yes I do love it so much I want to marry it.

It's just so so good this.

This is one of those rare, arcade perfect things. A pure, undiluted game.

It's worth every penny.

Yep - everything about it is perfect, sound, music, controls, graphics, secrets, challenges, leaderboards, quick restarts and zero unecessary plot.

I have an evening to myself tonight so once I have walked the dogs I am going to play this until my eyes bleed and see if I can make some headway into that bastard Zoidberg's score on arcade.

267M and 109th on the leaderboard. Sorry

That was amazing* timing. I had a go on it and upped my score by about 60m to 192 million then went to the leaderboard to gloat, only to find out since I had started playing you had gone and got *that* score. You're not even sorry.

I'm getting much better at managing the human multiplier now and dashing the shit out of stuff. Each playthrough teaches you something new.

*ultimately depressing

Yep, I think I've found most of the secret levels and humans on the first four worlds but don't get them all on a single play through.
I need to practice world five a lot more as I hardly get any there, and I know I could do a bit better on herding humans to keep the multiplier up.

I'm also not sure how to do the final boss without getting hit a couple of times.

There's definitely room for me to improve but I don't think I'm going to touch the 1 billion scores at the top of the leaderboard.

I bought this on Steam last night. I had one game of ARCADE mode on ROOKIE skill level and thought the whole thing looked and sounded jolly splendid, and was a superb game.

Then I played Hearthstone, did my backups (including offsite), and watched telly for the rest of the evening.

I will definitely return to this, possibly on a Friday night when I've had a 'glass' of wine, the family is in bed, and I can get headphoned up in a darkened room, crank up the volume, and wank myself silly have a good extended play session.

There appears to be some sort of option for cross-platform scoreboards so I'll have to look into that, so Dr Z and Trousers can make me miserable.

It seems to be one these games where lots of things will have to be learned and secrets found to snag a challenging score.

I always found that playing Super Hexagon on a faster mode then switching back to the normal mode made the game feel positively sedate. Definitely made it easier after that, but could never work out if it was a good thing or not.

321M and 70th on one life. Maximum multiplier is pegged at 100.

I'm finding more secrets but there's room for improvement still.

A smidge under 400M and 51st on Rookie now that I know where most of the secrets are, and I'm getting better at chaining.
Now back to Experienced difficulty for a while. I need to get to the end on 1 credit to see the hidden boss level.

By brother in law gifted me this on steam and it's really arcade heaven. It's the twin stick shooter to end all other twin stick shooters.

Too bad that the arcade mode needs to be played in one sitting, since my time to play games ever since my daughter was born is either non-existent or just a few minutes that i can fire one game of pinball arcade.

But when i have time, i'll definitely indulge in this. The presentation and soundtrack are also lovely.
