Yea. Much as they’re allowed to watch 18 films in the Home.

Personally I love the star wars shit show. Can’t control your kid and/or manage their expectations? Good. Can’t control your own spending and expectations? Good. Mass cancellations of buying decisions so that the price of the game plummets in the near future? Excellent, ta and yoink.

Huh, I didn't think they were allowed to.

Fair enough.

That's after it came out.

I guess that doesn't really matter, actually.

So now we’re conflating an arguable gambling aspect where (because it only works with duplicates) there is a finite max spend of £100 (maybe less) with life destroying and potentially unlimited loss gambling addiction. Mmmmhkay.

Whales on mobile games spend tens of thousands, though, so the line isn't quite that clear cut.

Yes but spending lots of money does not equate to gambling. There is a finite max spend on BF which someone could reasonably calculate, not an open ended infinite possibility as a hero can’t “drop”. And also, if you’re spending to get all the heroes, you’re spending to get all the heroes. If there is a gamble, it’s the luck that you “win” at a lower price than the ceiling.

Not convinced. There's a finite payout on a fruit machine, too: the amount of cash in its cash box. Doesn't mean it's not gambling. And if my reading of BF2's economy is correct, you could keep buying loot boxes and receiving duplicates of things you don't want forever, so there's not a finite max spend.

Remember how there wasn't a massive backlash at the previous game giving you the option to buy more levels and guns and stuff.

However in this case it’s the duplicates you want isn’t it, as it’s them you can exchange for credits and exchange for heroes. Unless you’re a completionist, which is where the gambling is potentially infinite. That’s how you can work out a finite max cost, being “winning” every possible item one by one, and having all your duplicates being the lowest credit exchange value possible.

From the Ars review, it's not just duplicates, you also want the best cards to give the best buffs to your favourite characters. And those really are specific buffs.

I’m struggling to find the link but someone worked this out. IIRC It would take about $2100 to get every item in the game or a mind boggling 4200 hours of play if you didn’t purchase any MTXs.

Comparing this situation to the annual moaning from iRacing members because the company are "only" offering a 25% discount on membership renewals for Black Friday when it used to be 50% a couple of years ago, I certainly know who sounds more entitled and which are valid concerns.

Okay, the single player in this is really fucking good.

Disclaimer: I don't really play AAA set-piece-athons so I'm always really impressed when I do. I also really liked that last Modern Warfare game with the robot man.

Wow. Arcade mode has a limit to how many credits you can earn a day. Play too much - you can’t earn credits for another 3 hours. WTF.

They don't want people* abusing it to get credits**.

*Who aren't paying them extra money above the retail price
**The only abuse of the system they're allowing is when you pay to do it. That's fine.

I played as Vader at the weekend. Turns out he's only locked in certain multiplayer scenarios* - in others, you just pick Vader from a list of baddies (assuming you get to pick first, as he's quite popular).

* The ones where you earn "battle points" as you play that particular game, and can spend them on gadgets and weapons and airstrikes an things - or you can flip into a "hero" character, which can only be heroes you've unlocked. Battle points are wasted if you don't spend them in that game, it's not a third currency.

So, you can be Bader a lot of the time, it's just that unless you X, Y, and Z, AND play a particular game mode AND score battlepoints then you cannot be him for a life, unless you have unlocked him?

You can play him in Hero mode too, which is one of the standard many V many multiplayer modes.

It was only in the charts for one day, right?

[edit] Yeah, SWBF1 came out on a Tuesday, and SWBF2 came out on Friday, so it stands to reason that boxed copies are down on a chart compiled on Friday night, doesn't it?

Chart days are different in the UK and US, so you might be comparing across countries there, I think. UK charts run Friday to Friday, US ones run Tuesday to Tuesday. That's why games (mostly) release on those days, and why we (mostly) wait a few days to get games compared to the US.

Edit -- I can't tell the source of the screenshot chart listing.

I was dubious about the "marketed at children" bit of that but

http://www.esrb.org/ratings/Synopsis.as ... lefront+2+
"Teen: Content is generally suitable for ages 13 and up. May contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling and/or infrequent use of strong language."

Whether it's a fair criticism or not, it's a bad look for EA and Disney.

This isn't doing particularly well in reviews.

Single player is short and uneven, (when it's good it's very good, when it's bad it's horrid), of the five multiplayer modes only two are any good, and whist the microtransactions might be gone the loot box system still hobbles it.

Seems to be a 5/10 to 6/10 kinda deal at a lot of places, just taken on its merits as a game.

Angry Joe's review is pretty good. He goes for 6/10.

The pre relase footage looked really good, I held of getting it on the XBox as Grim advised this was a 16 rated game so didn't want my son all over it as he loves Stars Wars.

Thought about getting the PC version but not so sure now :(

Because multiplayer matches in this game reward credits at a flat rate regardless of how well, or how much you do, you simply need to be 'in attendance' for a match (i.e. avoid getting kicked as AFK) to get as many credits as the best player on your team.

Which has, of course, led to this.

But they don't - you get kill bonuses and objective bonuses.

The lies around this game - especially from people like Eurogamer - are starting to get really silly now.

I read it on the internets so it must be true.

In the Angry Joe review he showed how the top ranked player in a match got about 30 credits more than the bottom ranked player in the same match who basically did nothing.

Eurogamer doesn't say you get a flat number of credits. It just says you can get a number for match participation using this trick because it evades an AFK kick. Where is the lie?

To be fair Hearthly invented the bit about flat earning of credit, the article doesn't say anything of the sort.

A lie is a deliberate intent to deceive, if what I said is not the case then it's a mistake.

EDIT - Looks like the accrual of credits has been changed to make it somewhat performance based, albeit you still get a reasonable amount just for showing up and not getting kicked as AFK, hence the 'elastic band farming' is a viable tactic to earn credits, which it really shouldn't be. Try that in a Battlefield game and you'll get precisely fuck all.

So anyway, not a lie, a mistake.
