Well shit, that seems to answer my own question.

Can your existing PC do VR (there is a thing on steam to benchmark this)?

Further considerations:
Psvr may have more "proper" games. I don't know
Vive does require a few things to get the best out of it - the audio strap is a good improvement. I don't know if they still come with the rubbish cable, or the new one. There's also a wireless unit which I'm waiting to hear a report for from a friend. (he got it a few days ago) which I think is Vive only and would represent a large benefit.

350 + 450 is 800, so you've just saved £100 to treat yourself to something else.

I ran the Steam VR assessment tool after I got my new(ish) GFX card from Myp.

Off the top of my head it's an i5 3470 @3.2, 8GB RAM, GTX970.

I mean, it's going to be a while before I've saved up enough for either, but £900 seems like a reach for an 'inferior' setup.

The PS4 option would be better for the kids too, though. Hmmm

Get the PS4 for now and then the PSVR stuff the day after.

Yeah good point. Also you don't actually have to get a PS4 Pro, I've got the standard one and the PSVR stuff seems great. Also I paid £300 for my PSVR so that's about £530 which is a lot less than £900.

VR seems fine with my non-Pro PS4 too, and I'm not desperate to upgrade, although buying the non-Pro new today is arguably a false economy. They say it's a bit better.

I suspect he's factoring the price of a couple of Technodicks in his £450 quote, which is sensible. You probably want those.

If you buy a new non-pro PS4 today then you’re only one step away from smashing flints together to cook dinner.

I mean, obviously what I'm going to do is save up for a few months and decide then, but I'm still leaning towards PSVR in spite of the price.

This will only serve to confuse matters but: a Rift wouldn't be "about £600", the bundle of Rift + touch controllers has had a permanent price drop to £400 which is significantly less...

Yeah, it's a genuinely sweet deal if you've got a capable PC. Note that the min spec for the Rift is lower than the Vive due to some techie magic they work at a hardware level so even if your machine was going to struggle with the Vive it would (allegedly) work better with the Rift.

There's a compatibility tool too. I just ran it on mine out of curiosity and mine fails on the graphics card, which wasn't a great surprise, as I only have a GT 730.

970 is fine for VR. The only reason I upgraded to 1070 was that iRacing was an unoptimised mess for VR initially. The 1070 barely made a difference. :D

Mine was £400, including technodicks, on prime day, so presumably black Friday will throw up something similar.

Also, apparently I spent £400 on PSVR, I should play it more.

MrsA, Gork and Mork are away. Old Man Afterthought came up last night and we had beers annacurry. This morning it was waffles and bacon for breakfast, and we sorted the garage out and i burnt furniture for seven hours after smashing it with a hatchet. He's gone back Kernow now (7 hour trip) and I am having a beer (hipster lager from Cloudwater) and reading a book in the micropub. Today has been good. I miss this.
