I went to the cinema at Liverpool One yesterday, there were closed captions and about 4 other people in there. Seats were fucking huge and comfy, and you can easily take your own sweets in.

Downside - stupid kid didn't want to watch Blade Runner. Stupid, stupid kid. So we watched Kingsman 2, whatever that's called. It was terrible. Best thing about it was the two old dears sat on the front row giggling and nudging each other the whole time. They were much more entertaining than the movie.

Picturehouse at FACT was the cinema of choice in Liverpool when I lived there. A bar with decent booze just a short sprint downstairs, between the screens and bogs!

Except for the downstairs 50-seater screen that was all sofas, then it was a short sprint upstairs to the bar.

Plus bonus points for the home arrangement are:

1) Because you've stolen the film, you don't have to sit through forty minutes of adverts and warnings about not stealing the film.

Eh. Turn up 25 minutes after the advertised start time and never see any of that. Also, I can't remember the last time I saw any kind of anti-piracy chat before a film.

Wait, what?

LEDs? That doesn't even make sense in the context of this thread.

On that evidence, we could replace you with the worst bot that's ever existed and still get more relevant chat.

Seriously dude, raise your game.

This has only ever been a problem for me once in the many years I've been going to the cinema. Not saying it doesn't happen, but you must go to some shitty cinemas for it to be a regular thing, a decent cinema will kick people out for this.

Quote:
2) The ability to pause if a comfort break is required, or getting a drink, or suchlike.

Granted.

3) You can replay a bit if you missed what happened or some dialogue.

You can, but I can't help but think that spoils the "flow" of the film a bit.

Quote:
5) Also the cinema is quite expensive if you go regularly.

£11.50 per month for unlimited movies for me, and if we go on a Tues/Weds then Jem can join me for free with Meerkat Movies (which has already paid for itself 10 times over)

Quote:
6) You don't have to travel to the cinema and like, park up and stuff, if you're just sat on your own couch.

Granted, but it's nice to go out for the evening and have something to eat while you're out etc.

Quote:
7) You can eat reasonably priced popcorn and other snacks in your own house.

Most cinemas these days don't seem to give a shit about you bringing in your own stuff, not even the big chains, in my experience.

Quote:
8 ) The sound can be a bit too loud in modern cinemas.

You must be getting old ;)

Quote:
9) Sometimes you may have to travel through undesirable areas to get to the cinema.

Or just don't go through those areas, or go to a different cinema?

Quote:
10) You can have subtitles when you're watching a film in your own house.

As someone who has horrific hearing sometimes, I always have subtitles on when watching films at home, but the volume in the cinema means I don't need 'em there.

:P

I have to admit that although I've been to the cinema a GAZILLION times this year - determined to make the most of Gaz's unlimited doodaa + meerkat movies - there is something to be said for being able to snuggle up under a duvet, bra off, copious cheap snacks in hand at home with a film.

(I considered taking my bra off during The Mountain Between Us at the cinema last night, but then realised I had nothing to put it in so would have had to carry it out of the cinema. That's levels of weirdness I'm not comfortable with.)

I categorise movies into "cinema movie" and "not cinema movie" to help me decide whether the public are worth putting up with for a few hours, or whether my home entertainment situation can adequately portray the movie as intended.

Generally, only action movies will get me into the cinema. Sometimes, I even find those movies better on the small screen afterwards. I don't want to get motion sickness watching a fight scene.

I saw Logan in the cinema, at a massive screen with those moving chairs that 'add' to the experience.

Unfortunately I was having a few issues at the time and ended up having a panic attack, irregular heartbeat and the inescapable feeling I was about to die of heart failure.

Kinda put me off Dbox, and somewhat unfairly, Logan!

That would have relieved some of the pressure from around the back but it wouldn't have taken the annoying rubby wires away from my skin which is what I wanted to escape from.

Bra off time is the most glorious part of any day. I haven’t worn an underwired bra in years. I don’t actually know why there’s a wire in some bras.

I do feel less like a homogeneous lump of middle flesh when wearing an underwired bra but a couple of mine are the wrong size and I am glad to get them off at the end of the day.

Bras are a racket and a half. Sal is constantly buying them because the underwire is always popping out - and they're eyewateringly expensive

Yes the are. I was gutted when I lost my bestest bra to an underwire malfunction (having bodged a fix twice)

Kingsman 2. Yes, well. I enjoyed it, but had to ignore the 12 year old's wish fulfillment view of sex bits.

Geostorm. It's shit, obviously, plot holes and rushed timing-various characters have to make huge decisions in seconds because otherwise it all falls apart. Worse or better, I can't decide, is it's attempt to avoid making it totally male. Worse, because it's so hackneyed - two female characters are more or less crammed into a scene just to make sure they've spoken to each other, but at least they made the effort. Couldn't work out if the young girl was terrible or doing the best she could with a mixture of 18 and 5 year old's dialogue. Female German chief scientist seems hard arsed at first, then is reduced to looking blankly over Gerard's shoulder as he does decisions. I decided having a British character who is a total prick and doesn't want to play with everyone in the international utopia was a very amusing political allegory, for which it gets an extra 200 bananas.

Andy Garcia shows Samuel L how you really phone in a performance.

But overall the tech was interesting-NASA wish fulfillment here, with a squadron of new shuttles-and flaunted. And the whole is shit in a fun way-expect little, get fun.

Just watched Blade Runner Final Cut with Sal. She said nothing happened until 20 mins till the end. I really loved it but I'm finding it hard to argue.

I watched it yesterday! I enjoyed the atmosphere but I was just sat there going “Akira did it better”.

Then when the main baddie strips down to his pants and chases Ford I started to switch off due to Ford dropping his gun and not even attempting to retrieve it. And I got annoyed that despite having a full functioning left hand he didn’t decide to sit in corner and wait for baddie to come in and then blast him. Instead he sets about climbing the tallest bookcase he can find (!?) .

Y'know I’ve never seen the theatrical cut but I saw a clip with the cheesy narrative voiceover and thought that might be better for people who don’t like long lingering shots of people looking distant.

I still don’t get the unicorn but though. I might have to look up what that was all about...

It's because Deckard dreamt of a unicorn at one point and that's the dude basically saying 'I know what you dream about', i.e. 'I know what you are'.

Although there are still arguments about whether or not Deckard is a replicant, Scott has said that he is and he's the director so, like, we could say he is.

Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer and the guy who wrote the script all say he is human.

Evidence for Deckard being a replicant: The unicorn and theres that one scene where his eyes shine like the replicants (Harrison Ford stood in the wrong place)

Evidence that he's just human: the replicants fucking cream him. He also shows far, far more emotion than any of the replicants in the film. The only replicant that isn't initially aware of their status is Rachel... and she works it out quickly

Given his recent track record, I think it's safe to say that Ridley Scott is awesome at the visual side of film making, but knows fuck all about the content of his fims.

(For the record, my opinion: It doesn't matter either way, the point of the movie is that replicants ARE human. But the story loses its centre if he's a replicant and it makes even less sense)

I'm fairly sure that the ambiguity is what makes everything work.

I agree with you that it doesn't matter as it's not in any way what the film is 'about' as it were. Then again I don't think it particularly spoils/changes the film if you think he's a replicant or not though, he could be a different model running a newer version of Android, or something.

The unicorn sequence and origami unicorn are hard to reconcile without him being a replicant though.

(I'm not committed to thinking one way or the other, not least because I agree it doesn't matter so I've never given it that much thought.)

It's definitely one of my favourite ever films in The Final Cut form - possibly Top Ten list material. (I rewatched it fairly recently for the umpteeneth time.)

I disagree, although I personally like the ambiguity. It's more thematically consistent if he's human. He shows the replicants no mercy; he guns Zora down in the street as she flees in terror. Despite that, Roy not only doesn't kill him, but he saves Deckard's life at the end. This inverted symmetry is the pivot the whole film turns on: the replicant has far more humanity than the human, and what's the point of exalting human status if the human has no compassion and no conscience? You lose all that if Deckard isn't human.

The best moment in the film for me is one that isn't often mentioned, though. It's Graff's final line to Deckard as he leaves with Rachel. "Too bad she won't live... but then again, who does?" I love the fatalistic-yet-defiant outlook and the double meaning. Gives me chills every time.

The Dark Tower: This commits the cardinal sin of being boring throughout. It has a single big set piece and it’s not very good. Plus, and this is probably a problem due to the source material which I’m unfamiliar with, but I’m sick to death of corny bullshit stories: “Only the mind of a child can bring down the tower”. Whut? LULZ. Yawn.

Atomic Blonde: I had high hopes for this as being a John Wick visceral action film ... and it let me down. This has a single big set piece and it’s very very good but that’s it. I wanted more, much more, of that sort of thing. Lack of headshots aside it’s very watchable and there’s some good characters, side boob, the odd nip and some lovely girl on girl romance. Anyway, it reminded me of that film that I really liked which was based on the old spy TV show - but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called. Not The Avengers. Or maybe it was. Did it have a tank on water or something. Christ, it was really good. Anyway, I liked that one better whatever it was called. Atomic Blonde is stylised but not overly so, but the music was too in your face for my liking. Hey look guys it’s the 80’s, it’s constantly screaming into your face. Baby Driver managed to incorporate music better.

American Made: and finally, here’s my pick of the three films and it’s a shocker. Tom Cruise, stay with me here, in a good film again! I know, right. Well, it’s Tom Cruise but not playing his normal Mission Impossible character. Slightly. Let’s not get too carried away, because it’s only a touch away from his usual stuff, but he does a decent job here. I just wish the director had the balls to challenge him more and say “Hey Cruise, you’re a big star and all but here’s where I want you to play the same scene but absolutely desperate. No, more desperate than that. Nooo, even more. Feel the desperation of this man who is absolutely fucked. FUCKED. He will DIE Tom. Do you want to DIE? DO YOU TOM!?”.

I’ve got off track, anyway, it’s loosely based on the story of this guy who was both a massive criminal (smuggling drugs and guns) while simultaneously working for the CIA. It’s a hell of a story and it turns out that the movie takes ginormous liberties with the true events that played out for this guy. Still, I didn’t learn that until I’d read up after the film had finished because it was so interesting I wanted to find out more. Super-duper good, so go give it a whirl.

The Man from UNCLE? I'm going to assume you don't mean The Avengers film (Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman) as it was apparently fucking awful.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it as well. Though a lot of it's appeal did come from Elizabeth Debicki being all Elizabeth Debicki in it.

Solo: A Star Wars Story I'm guessing.
