EDIT - Also, WTF nothing from The Flaming Lips?

Flaming Lips is a gap that needs to be plugged, for shame though I don't really know any of their stuff particularly well, even though Radcliffe and Maconie play them quite a lot on Radio 6 and have had them as guests a couple of times. Suggestions for the Flaming Lips track are welcome.

As for R.E.M. - the track I had on the list until last week for them was the impossibly wonderful live version of Country Feedback with Neil Young's mesmerising performance. But then I was cooking at the weekend and I listened to all of Green whilst I cooked and remembered how awesome it was and with great reluctance replaced Country Feedback with Turn You Inside Out - Stipe does intelligent anger so well.

But yeah, I could pick a different R.E.M. track every day of the week for a month or two, quite easily.

Incidentally, Stipe has consistently said that Country Feedback is his favourite R.E.M. song.

The best REM song is probably Let Me In. Monster is such a fucking brilliant album.

I actually meant In Bloom. Doh!

I could pick about two dozen R.E.M. tracks to fit. For all the stick they got over the years, they have a crazy amount of good songs.

On no, In Bloom mocks people who like music without spending time to discover the "deep meaning". Fuck that pretentious shit.

Turns out I meant "Breed".

Up was really good as well to be fair. In fact that's the last REM album I really listened to. Just one of those bands that fell by the wayside for me over the years for no reason at all.

There are some real gems on all of their last five albums, but they are quite inconsistent and the weaker tracks on them lurch alarmingly towards being outright 'below average' or even 'poor' at times.

That said, a few years ago I listened to their entire canon back-to-back in the car over the course of a couple of weeks' worth of drives to and from work, and their output overall is astonishingly good.

In fact, that's something I need to do again at some point, listen to every studio album they've ever put out, but this time assemble a 'Best of R.E.M' Spotify playlist, assuming all their albums are actually on Spotify.

One thing I have noticed is that even where an artist is on Spotify and looks to the casual observer to be complete, there can be gaps in the collection. Duran Duran and Chumbawamba spring to mind. (The 'Pop Trash' album by Duran Duran is missing, and both 'Shhh' and 'Anarchy' by Chumbawamba are missing.)

A reappraisal has seen the Manics' entry changed to Motorcycle Emptiness, I'd somehow forgotten how good it is.

Now up to 180 tracks, and there's been a bit of a shuffle around at the start.

Inspired by Hearthly and to stick one in Bamba's eye about Motorcycle Emptiness being their only decent song, I made a Spotify playlist of Fopproved Manics Songs. No more Kevin Carter! No more Intense Humming of Evil! Just the good stuff*. Best listened to on shuffle.

*It's very light on the last several years' of work, not necessarily because it's bad, but because I kind of stopped listening. It's got a couple from Send Away the Tigers, I think that's as late as the list goes.

Now up to 200 tracks, the rate of additions has obviously slowed down as every new track has to be a new artist, and replacements for existing tracks are now happening frequently as well.

I shall continue to work on it, currently got it on shuffle play in the car, which is helping to identify weak links for changes.

I never listen to Heart Radio.

The only radio station I listen to is Radio 6 and that's 95% the Radcliffe & Maconie show on catchup over the weekend, they play Prince tracks from time to time and I've heard When Doves Cry on there a handful of times over the years, it's quite good I think.

It was also the 'collect bank' sample that Maygay used on their fruit machines in the early 90s.

Obviously there needs to be a Prince track on there somewhere, I am open to suggestions as to better options :)

I think there is a better Manics track than Motorcycle Emptiness.

Quote:
No one likes looking at you
Your lack of ego offends male mentality
They need your innocence
To steal vacant love and to destroy
Your beauty and virginity used like toys

My mind is dead, everybody loves me
Wants a slice of me
Hopelessly passive and compatible
Need to belong, oh the roads are scarey
So hold me in your arms
I want to be your only possession

Used, used, used by men

All they leave behind is money
Paper made out of broken twisted trees
Your pretty face offends
Because it's something real that I can't touch
Eyes, skin, bone, contour, language as a flower

No god reached me, faded films and loving books
Black and white TV
All the world does not exist for me
And if I'm starving, you can feed me lollipops
Your diet will crush me
My life just an old man's memory

Little baby nothing
Loveless slavery, lips kissing empty
Dress your life in loathing
Breaking your mind with Barbie Doll futility

Little baby nothing
Sexually free, made-up to breakup
Assassinated beauty
Moths broken up, quenched at last
The vermin allowed a thought to pass them by

You are pure, you are snow
We are the useless sluts that they mould
Rock 'n' roll is our epiphany
Culture, alienation, boredom and despair

You are pure, you are snow
We are the useless sluts that they mould
Rock 'n' roll is our epiphany
Culture, alienation, boredom and despair

Here's a shitheel thing that Spotify does, it secretly caches everything you 'stream' to a hidden folder buried away at:

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Spotify\Data

This had grown to nearly 10GB on my PC, which when you're running on a 119GB SSD as your system drive, is a fucking lot. (I'd noticed my SSD capacity going further and further into the red, and was wondering what was causing it, one Treesize later and I had my culprit.)

Note that it does this irrespective of where you set Spotify's offline cache to be, which I had already configured to be on a data drive, but the offline cache is not the same thing as its secret online cache. (You can understand conceptutally why they do it, since it saves you downloading the same songs every time you listen to them, reducing the load on Spotify's servers.)

Note I used the word 'downloading' there, as monitoring the behaviour of this folder I observed that as soon as you start 'streaming' a song, what it actually does is immediately download the song (in an encrypted format) to this folder, and plays it from there.

There is absolutely no way you can stop this behaviour, you can add a line to a buried away config file to set the data folder to a max size in megabytes, at which point Spotify will start to 'churn' the data in this folder as required, but fundamentally Spotify won't work unless that folder is there at its default path and it can write to it.

Anyway, MKLINK seemed to offer a handy solution with its ability to create directory junctions, and I can confirm it works perfectly. If you ever come across the same problem, then a command such as this (modified for your username and preferred new location) will do the job. (Run from an elevated command prompt, make sure Spotify is closed (not minimised) and delete the actual data folder before running the command as MKLINK creates the junction when run.)

Code:
mklink /J "C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Spotify\Data" "G:\SPOTIFYSECRET"

(Note that after a couple of hours of listening to music after I'd made the change, the SPOTIFYSECRET folder had already grown to 545MB, so it's quite a greedy bastard.)

Or you could put your appdata as a whole to a more sensible location if you have a small system disk.

Need to belong, oh the roads are scarey
So hold me in your arms
I want to be your only possession

Used, used, used by men

All they leave behind is money
Paper made out of broken twisted trees
Your pretty face offends
Because it's something real that I can't touch
Eyes, skin, bone, contour, language as a flower

No god reached me, faded films and loving books
Black and white TV
All the world does not exist for me
And if I'm starving, you can feed me lollipops
Your diet will crush me
My life just an old man's memory

Little baby nothing
Loveless slavery, lips kissing empty
Dress your life in loathing
Breaking your mind with Barbie Doll futility

Little baby nothing
Sexually free, made-up to breakup
Assassinated beauty
Moths broken up, quenched at last
The vermin allowed a thought to pass them by

You are pure, you are snow
We are the useless sluts that they mould
Rock 'n' roll is our epiphany
Culture, alienation, boredom and despair

You are pure, you are snow
We are the useless sluts that they mould
Rock 'n' roll is our epiphany
Culture, alienation, boredom and despair

Can't argue with that, it grows in a way Motorcycle Emptiness doesn't.

Fun fact, they originally wanted kylie for backing vocals on little baby nothing. When they were unsurprisingly turned down they chose former porn actress Traci Lords instead.

This is literally the first time it's ever been a problem, I appreciate a lot of stuff uses the appdata folder but I've never seen anything consume it like Spotify does, which is unsurprising considering what it does with it.

Utterly fucking shit piece of application design really, especially considering you can already specify where it puts offline files through the standard UI.

Yes it was the background to the song that drew me to it and then when I heard it I loved it.

Whilst Motorcycle Emptiness is a fine track everyone's heard it a million times already, it's kind of your go-to Manics track, and I'll often try to have less obvious choices on the list for any given artist (but not always).

Also, it's not really a great track to have on in the car, as I discovered the other day when its turn came round on the playlist.

250 tracks. All unique artists. (Cheevo?)

Obviously the rate of additions is slowing quite considerably now, but new tracks from formerly unrepresented artists are still being added, existing tracks are being changed, and the overall order is still getting shuffled around quite a bit too.

I'm not even remotely trying to be 'cool' (whatever that is) so the Spice Girls' 'Viva Forever' is in there, because it's just such a lovely pop tune, and Mel C's 'I Turn To You' is listed as well (for the same reason albeit with the darker edge she brought as a solo artist, and it's a splendid track with trancey vibes), plus there are now a smattering of straightforward trance tracks included because trance is timelessly awesome and at the end of the day this is mostly for me and Mrs Hearthly to have music we like to listen to on demand - and if anyone else likes it that's cool.

As ever though, I don't believe for one second it's perfect and/or complete, and it never will be - so suggestions are always appreciated.

If you fancy some modern stuff:

Nothing But Thieves - Amsterdam
Declan McKenna - Brazil
Will Joseph Cook - Take Me Dancing
Glass Animals - Life Itself
Man & The Echo - Distance Runner
Rat Boy - Laid Back
Sundara Karma - Explore
Marsicans - Far Away (Saudade)
Los Campesinos! - Renato Dall'Ara (2008)
Ezra Furman - Lousy Connection

Most from this year, and largely in keeping with the genres in the tracklisting you have there.

Cheers Curio I'll give those a try :)

I'm very much aware that a lot of the selection is sort of what you'd expect from a bloke in his early 40s and that could do with being addressed.

Radio 6 is excellent for getting to hear new stuff, or rather, it was, until one day the news came on whilst Jnr was in the room and she heard something that really upset her and now I can't have Radio 6 on whilst she's around, and since we're usually in the same room that's pretty much knocked Radio 6 on the head.

I mean, why have a graphic report about a woman getting her throat slit open in the middle of a fucking afternoon fucking radio show?

I too will check out this recommendations, thanks Curiosity. Was already a big fan of Lousy Connection (love those rolling trumpet parps) so will check out others.

Weirdly, we had the Chopley playlist on heavy rotation during our holiday in France. I'd say I enjoyed about 50% of it, which isn't a bad hit rate. Could do without being reminded of the Cardigans, though.

My (not at all leftfield but nevertheless excellent) jukebox additions to the list would be:

Fight Like Apes - Something Global
Futureheads - Hounds of Love
Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind
Erasure - A Little Respect
Beastie Boys - Skills to Pay the Bills
Super Furry Animals - Chupacabras
The Hold Steady - Same Kooks
Nena - 99 Luftballoons
Aztec Camera - Somewhere in My Heart
Smashing Pumpkins - Jellybelly
Fuck Buttons - Brainfreeze

Chupacabras was always my song of choice when you had slightly too long a gap at the end of one side of a tape. [/old]

Nice! There should be a neologism for that (albeit 20 years too late).

Yeah but who didn't fancy Nina Persson? Plus they had that cool video for My Favourite Game (which MTV only showed the uncut version of after 11pm IIRC).

Any particular lowlights/highlights from the list? I'm always interested to hear what other people think of music.

And thanks for your suggestions too, I'll add them to the FRIDAY NIGHT BUCKIE JUKEBOX, which I think is when music is best appraised. (Although several of your artists are already on the list and their tracks have been considered. Like, if Smashing Pumpkins have done a better track than 'Stand Inside Your Love' I've never heard it.)

I loved My Favourite Game, mostly down to it being on the Gran Turismo soundtrack

Good track. I like that song Nina did with the Manics 'Your love alone'.

The Feeder tracks Just a Day and Buck Rogers still do this day remind me of GT3 on the PS2. Good times.

So, I got a 24mo Premium sub to this with my phone contract. Started adding all my library to it so I can cancel my Apple Music sub... but yet I've only got up to D (Dead Kennedys in fact) and it's told me my library is now full! So I look it up and there's a 10k song limit. I mean...what? Why? It's not like I'm uploading or downloading all these songs and causing strain on their servers. How on earth does it make a difference how many songs I have added to my library? Infuriating.

So, I got a 24mo Premium sub to this with my phone contract. So I look it up and there's a 10k song limit. I mean...what? Why? It's not like I'm uploading or downloading all these songs and causing strain on their servers. How on earth does it make a difference how many songs I have added to my library? Infuriating.

This might sound like a stupid question, but are you adding all these files locally? Isn't most of it available on Spotify already so that you can just search and create playlists?

Nope, I'm adding them to the "Your Music" library section. There is a limit to offline files at 3,333, which is more understandable.

There is some chat about it here: https://community.spotify.com/t5/Live-I ... i-p/733759

Spotify seem to justify it by saying only 1% of users are affected, but surely those are power users who are more likely than not to be big music aficinados. It's just really silly.

Is there a limit to the number of tracks you can have in your playlist(s)?

It's all Spotify stuff so far, I haven't even begun to add the stuff that's not on there. Gaywood came up with an idea that has helped though. Instead of adding every album I want into the library, I can just follow the artist and it does somewhat the same thing.

What I mean though is that surely the my files thing is for adding tracks that aren't already on Spotify? If they're already there what's the value in adding them?

Had this for a while as got a year free when I upgraded my wife's phone deal

Never going back :) I now have it as the primary music service on the Echo. I will still have the smaller Amazon Prime music library as that is lumped with Prime.

I've moved all my MP3's on the NAS to some hard drives as its no longer worth the hassle of tagging them.

Love the play lists, we have been watching a show called Snowfall that is set in the 1980's just as crack cocaine starts to become a big issue.

It has great music and I just searched for the show and there was all the music from the in a playlist

First paid service that does everything I want :)

I have a small requirement for that :) I rip a lot of kids stuff like Mr Men Shows from YouTube that my son likes to listen to.

With the Prime Music you can upload 250 tracks so I use this.

Because otherwise you're just either shuffling music or searching for who you want to listen to. I like to have a collection I can browse through.

However Gaywood has offered an alternative which seems to work so it's all good.
