Heh no - have never used Kwikfit for anything as they're a bunch of liars and thieves.

Grim - how would that help? The jack itself tipped over as the car was on too much of an incline (nose to tail)

Oh, I misunderstood. Yeah, you'd have to level the jack base up then.

And chock a wheel anyway.

This should do you:

It is time to order this oil!

The S4 is 'using' a litre every 1400-1500 miles, bloody thing.

Still £28.11p for five litres is a lot more palatable than £50 for four litres.

Thanks for the heads-up Grim... :)

I recall long term test reports from various car mags reporting that some performance audis use lots of oil.

Apparently the 'bad' ones can be a litre every 1000 miles :o

Many theories abound on the internetz as to the root cause, and Audi are total arseholes about it, officially designating that a litre every 1000 miles or less is within normal operating parameters, so you can't complain to them 'cause it says it in the manual.

It's not anything to worry about per se, once your car's 'loss rate' has been established it'll stay the same and not get any worse, and the engines are now routinely getting up to 100-150K without issues, just make sure you've got a steady supply of oil available.

It's not even just the performance ones either, a mate at work has a 1.8T A4 and his spunks through a litre every 1000 miles or so.

One theory here, for example:

Quote:
Some of our cars use negligible oil. Others more than that. The real problem is that Audi sets the standards for "EXCESSIVE" oil consumption so high(1 qt/1000 miles) that they will almost never have a warranty claim. Its pure Audi BS cop out. Most of those with cars that do consume appreciable amounts of oil have unfortunately followed Audi's "easy" break in technique. No one posting on AW, QW or AZ that has used more aggressive techniques have reported significant oil consumption issue so far. That cannot be said about those following the audi easy technique. What break in style did you use? If you did baby the car for the first 1000 miles and you have oil consumption issues, most likely, your piston rings have never completely seated. AND, it is not likely that they ever will. I hope I am wrong. Nevertheless, Audi doesn't care and most likely will never rectify the situation unless you are consuming more than 1 qt/1000 miles. IMHO, That's a lot of oil to burn and still be considered "within normal limits". You might find some of the posts by redrockeron this link interesting since they are based on actual oil analysis of his engine http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...-1k-Oil-change

My Octavia rs' 1.8t never burnt oil. It was a fleet car for Bentley for a year before I had it. I doubt they treated it any more nicely than I did.

:DD

It's just the way the B8 A4/S4 is, not even specifically the V6 3.0 litre supercharged engine found in my car.

It is a ballache but I'm not massively concerned about it, in fact I just tell myself that a car getting a litre of fresh oil every 1500 miles isn't a bad thing, it's like a rolling programme of oil changes :)

There was some class lawsuit thing settled a few years back IIRC over in The States, whereby Audi agreed to fix cars with 'excessive' oil consumption or something.

Isn't there a danger of killing the catalyst with all that oil smoke, and/or failing emissions testing?

That's a ridiculously high oil consumption IMO. Not one of my cars of the last 5 years has even required one single oil top up between servicing (except for my Amarok, which does seem to like a dash of oil occasionally but nowhere to this extent - and it's a 2-tonne, 3 litre diesel 4x4 Ute). Do you get blue smoke when revved and/or at other times?

Well the numbers roughly work out as follows, long-term the car is doing 24.7mpg which equates to about 5.5 miles per litre of petrol.

As such in 1500 miles it’ll use 273 litres of petrol, and one litre of oil.

So the ratio of petrol to oil being burned is 273:1, so no, there’s no blue smoke or anything else. If it weren’t for having to top it up with a litre every 1500 miles, there’d be no indication there was anything out of the ordinary.

If you do 100,000 miles in that Audi, you'll spend £1,873 on oil.

That's... That's a lot.

Plus, let's be honest, most people are too lazy and/or disorganised (very much including me) to organise some internet bulk buy of cheap oil or whatever, we'd just reach for the (£20) litre of Helix ultra or whatever in the Shell garage. In which case, I guess that figure goes up considerably - and it doesn't include actual scheduled oil change costs either? :S

Still say this sounds well excessive to me, and if it were me having to fork out/constantly fill the oil, I'd be a bit miffed.

Nah, I based on this stuff, which is £28: https://www.amazon.co.uk/FUCHS-TITAN-5W ... ag=beex-21

I'm not sure I'd ever change the oil if it ate it at that rate.

Sorry Myp, Mrs C is already booked :luv:

Assuming you're not mucking about, though, sure we could get some Silverstone or Oulton action sorted at some point?
