So, it all starts just over a year ago.
I had just arrived at Leeds festival, I was stewarding for Oxfam, and the deal is, you get 3 eight hour shifts throughout the festival, randomly assigned. I got shitty shifts, like, working Friday and Saturday night. I go and have a word with the top Oxfam bloke (who I am fairly pally with) to see if he can sort me out some better shifts, and funnily enough, they need 4 Oxfam stewards to go and work for "The Green Messengers", who are the recycling people, because they are short of staff. They work Wednesday, Thursday, and Monday, so miss none of the festival.
I jumped at the chance, mainly so I didn't miss NIN.
So, I turn up on the Wednesday morning. We get handed a bunch of recycling bags, and are told to pair off, and go and hand them out to people setting up camp.
I get paired up with this really sweet, hot girl called Dani. This is where the story starts to get interesting.
We have a really great time hanging out all day. We get on really well, and there is a lot of chemistry between us. We go for some hot cider after we finish our shifts, and agree to make sure we are paired together the next day too.
Same again the next day, we have a load of fun just hanging out together, and we swap phone numbers so we can go and see a bunch of the bands we both want to see together. Except shortly after the shift my battery died...
We see each other again on Monday, and because of riots, she got no sleep, and is barely fit to stand up, never mind work. I pretty much look after her the whole shift, and we are hugging lots. She then reveals that she has a long term boyfriend, and it kind of ends there...
Except, I still have her phone number, so after I get home, and have charge, we text each other a few times, and then add each other on facebook, and keep in touch a little bit like that.
Flash forwards to just before Leeds festival this year. Fantastic, she is going to come again, and even better, she's an Oxfam steward this time too, so we can camp together. On the downside, her boyfriend is here this time too, although not as an Oxfam steward, so he won't be camped with us.
Anyway, we spend the whole time hanging out, and we got our shifts together. We get on even better than before, there is an obvious spark between us, and we come very close to kissing a bunch of times. I kind of held back because I knew she was in a relationship, but I was also not sure if it was all just in my head. But now my feelings for her are much stronger. Just being around her makes me happy.
Anyway, I meet her boyfriend, and he really likes me, he thinks I am the funniest guy on the planet, and a "Legend"...he's a nice enough guy too.
So, things kind of end there, with me thinking the whole thing is a non-starter.
I went away to PAX straight away after Leeds, and when I got back, she was in Portugal. I decided, sod it, I don't want to wait a year to see her again, I am going to send her an email telling her how I feel.
Then I had to wait 6 days til she got back from Portugal. Which was agony.
Eventually, I got a response. A pretty heavy one (1,500+ words), but the upshot is, she has been thinking of breaking up with her boyfriend for a while, and is planning to do so at some point next week. Then she wants to take things slowly, but feels pretty much the same way about me as I do about her.
So..."It's complicated", but I am very optimistic. We go to uni just over an hour away from each other too.
Edit: and that's probably the most personal story I have ever told "the internet"
