Continuing our on-going series of the benefits of Brexit, we turn to Westminster Hall where MPs were yesterday debating another vital gain of becoming a free and independent nation again: the choice of flag on a car's numberplate.

I propose a bill where everyone who wants to have a flag on their number plate can do but only if they then take that number plate and SHOVE IT RIGHT UP THEIR STUPID FUCKING BREXITEERING ARSE.

Symbols matter. To some people, the EU flag on their car, the words 'European Union' on their passport, the use of the CE mark rather than the Crown on a pint glass and so on all suggest that the EU is usurping the UK as the sovereign state.

Admittedly, I've not been immune to this. I've always found some aspects of the EU's pretensions to statehood rather comical, but then I find most UK ceremonies wryly amusing too. And other than the 50 Euro note and the phallic imagery on the first issues of Euro coins, the EU tended to be bland and unoffensive - as appealing to loyalty as a local Tesco.

I think we should complain that it's still 'GB', thus excluding our Northern Irish brethren.

I had to stop reading part-way through when I realised how much discussion was being had over the issue. It's like they can't even think about all the big stuff that Brexit's going to change, so they're doing the easy stuff. It should just have gone -

- I beg to move, that this House has considered the use of regional flags on driving licences and number plates.
- Ok. We'll discuss that later according to its importance. I've allocated it to item number 329804732984729 on the Brexit agenda.

Weeeeell, I can sort of see where they're coming from, a bit. I mean, the idea of sovereign nation states has been fairly embedded in European consciousness since the Treaty of Westphalia.

Whenever you're in difficulty around the world, just remind officials, immigration officers, nightclub bouncers, etc that Her Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State Requests and Requires in the Name of Her Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance. Works every time.

I have no interest in nationalism or 'patriotism'. A flag is just a piece of material. I don't see the point in being proud purely because I was born on one particular bit of rock over another. To me being a good patriot is putting the interest of the country's people first, and we don't appear to be doing that at all.

Heh. To be fair, we didn't have another Hundred Years War.

Myp, true, but if one wants to be charitable perhaps it isn't nationalism per se, but more about a sense of belonging to something (and latching onto the visible markers of that), which is part of our evolutionary strategy as a species - the idea of society and behaviour that doesn't involve killing anyone and taking their stuff flows along from what was a pack or tribe, and it's just extended out. At some point hopefully we'll get to the "world is my society" stage, but I won't hold my breath. Particularly given that most people can't hold sustain more than a handful of relationships at any one time, so I'm not sure how scalable it is.

Interesting side comment about the constitutional status of Kernow, there, too

Quote:
I propose that, should a motorist want to have a flag for their country or county—or, in Cornwall’s case, duchy—the flag could be accompanied by a Union Jack to make it clear that the vehicle was from the United Kingdom.

It is often stated that the Union Flag should only be described as the Union Jack when flown in the bows of a warship, but this is a relatively recent idea. From early in its life the Admiralty itself frequently referred to the flag as the Union Jack, whatever its use, and in 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that Their Lordships had decided that either name could be used officially. Such use was given Parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that “the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag”.

If people didn't want their precious flag flying the wrong way up then they should have put a bit more fucking effort into making sure it looked a bit more different when it is.

Speaking of flags, when we went to IKEA last week, they had the Swedish flag flying at half mast to mark the tragedy in Stockholm.

I was sufficiently touched to put in a glowing review on their in-store computer.

Surely it would also be pretty hard for the goodies to tell as well if they weren't stood right next to it. In which case you could have just told them whatever it was you were trying to signal.

I just passed a number of people waving EU flags from the footbridge over Botley Road just now. Is there a national day of action going on, or just pre-election jitters?

In other news, I expect the bill to be reduced down to the original €60 billion (about £1 zillion at the current rate) plus ongoing subscriptions and to be hailed as a diplomatic triumph by the Tories.

I've not watched the clip but this exchange I've read on This is Oxfordshire between Mr Farron and an angry voter kind of sums up the state of the country at the moment:

Quote:
Mr Baker said: "Do not tell people who voted leave that they didn't know what they were voting for."

In response, Mr Farron questioned the disgruntled voter about whether he was proud his grandchildren 'would inherit a poorer, less powerful, less secure country'.

"I'm proud that they will be coming out of Europe and that we will have our own destiny and not have people telling us we are going to pay £100 billion to get out," Mr Baker said.

Yeah, we didn't hear a word from Eurosceptics after they lost in '76. Now it's our turn to keep schtum.

If you're railing against the 'Establishment' by voting leave, you're going to be angry at any perceived attempt by said 'Establishment' to take away your victory. Me? I'm happy to concede if, in 10 or 20 years, life is better as a result of all this that I voted the wrong way. At present, nothing convinces me this isn't the biggest political disaster since Iraq or the Poll Tax. It may even reach the giddy heights of the Suez fiasco.
