It's almost as if different people like different things for different reasons, and sometimes those reasons may seem illogical to others, or weird, even.

Also: it's possible to watch and enjoy more than one TV show. I know, shocking isn't it?

BCS is objectively better than TWD though, on all key performance indicators it wins. Except zombie count.

A panel of experts would say BCS is better than Ali, anti-lock brakes, and TWD. PUT TOGETHER.

ZOMG SEASON TWO FINALE.

Literally the only thing wrong with Better Call Saul is how bloody long we're now going to have to wait for the next season, other than that it's effectively perfect telly.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Maybe I was a bit slow on the uptake, but right at the end of the CONFESSION I suddenly thought, 'Oh my goodness me, Chuck's taping it.' AND HE WAS.

Curse waiting months for Season Three.

Oh man. That was the finale? It can't end there!

I really swing between hating and sympathising with Chuck, and have swung back into the hate camp. What I got from the last episode is that as much as Jimmy puts him through shit, Chuck puts him through shit tenfold and then has the gall to take the moral high ground. He's not a very nice person. I reckon if the roles had been reversed and it had been Jimmy on the copy shop floor, Chuck would have walked away.

On some levels I think it's better than Breaking Bad, and that really is saying something.

BB\BCS best telly ever IMO.

I was dubious about the spin off at first but so pleased that it's turned out far better than I expected. Bloody brilliant.

It was so tense I almost forgot to breathe. They've invested so much in these characters, given us so much history, so much motivation, we're so 'with' them as it were, you're willing things to go right for them on such a fundamental level.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The scene with Chuck in the hospital, that long, upside-down shot of his anguished face, another piece of masterful production. And then at the end when I realised (before the actual reveal) that Chuck was taping Jimmy's confession, and that's what he'd been out in the garage for, I felt a proper gutpunch on Jimmy's behalf.

It's almost impossible to pick out the good bits, because it's all fantastic, I don't think I've ever watched a programme that does everything so absolutely resolutely on its own terms - and it's all the better for it.

I had a degree of trepidation at the notion of not only a spin off, but a prequel spin off. There was a lot of scope for it going horribly wrong. But the resulting show really is fantastic.

I still think the moments that I least like are when they try to tie it into the Breaking Bad story too much, in ways that stretch believablity. Yes the cheeky nods and winks are amusing, and it's nice to see a few familiar faces in somewhat different circumstances, but I think it's good enough to stand alone, and it's at it's best when it's trying to do that.

Presumably they are building to the next season detailing with:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Mike somehow getting recruited by Fring (who I suspect might have written the "Don't" note), and I guess depicting whatever happened to Tio to paralyze him. I'm not actually sure if there is anything in Breaking Bad to imply a timeline of whether Mike started working for Fring before or after he started working for Saul, or how Saul managed to get hold of Fring's contact details. I know he says "I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy", but it's not really clear if that's just an attempt to not divulge their connection, if he's talking about Mike, or some other connection. I must say that I'd expected to see Saul dipping his toe into the world of criminal underworld lawyering by this point, but the drama between him, Chuck, HHM and the other players in the reputable side of lawyering is plenty entertaining to watch unfold.

Edit: Further potential spoilers for the future of the show.

I think I prefer it to Breaking Bad. I love it's glacial pace. And I want nothing to speed it up. But at the same time, without meaning to be cruel, Mike's and Salamanca's age (69 and 76 respectively) has to mean it can't just run and run.

I think Season 3 has to be the last before they have to jump forward. (although, I would prefer it if they had a timeline split where a sliding doors-esque choice happens one towards BB and one towards new pastures.)

I read a piece somewhere saying it didn't matter what the switch did or didn't do, it was the fact Jimmy pulled it that told us what we needed to know about him. (Think it might have been something on The Guardian, maybe even an interview with Vince Gilligan.)

Is that a kind of MacGuffin? I am not literate enough in such matters to determine conclusively. According to Wiki it might be.

I think a MacGuffin is more a device to create tension or drama, like a bomb ticking away in a basket. Point being that for the audience, the bomb seems to be the important bit, but from the director and writer point of view, the point is the drama created by the bomb. So they are coming up with an essentially stupid plot device to play the audience, which is why it has this sort of condescending name.

So the switch thing sort of fits that according to Lord Wikipedia.

Not that it really matters, the point is the switch didn't matter, Jimmy pulling it did. I'm annoyed I can't remember exactly where I read it, especially if it was from VG himself as then it would be authoritative.

Watched S03E01 on Netflix last night. As ever there was that somewhat problematic process of trying to remember everything that happened at the end of Season 2, not helped by the fact that the episode started with a 'current day' segment at Cinnabon and then picked up where the last season left off. (And even then, not exactly diving back into it.)

Still, it all started to come together nicely as the episode went on and by the final straight I was thoroughly engrossed again.

Also, I think Jonathon Banks looks better than he did in Season 2 so maybe he's been eating more fruit, or something.

After the episode had finished I did a bit of a recap on Wikipedia to remind myself of the various pieces that had been in play during the episode, and would recommend that anyone yet to watch S03E01 does so before watching it.

I was watching on Netflix but because I 'acquired' Season 2 of BCS and never watched it on Netflix, it still thought I needed to watch Season 2 and started at S02E01. By the time I'd got it to manually start S03E01, the recap thingy was no longer there so I went in cold.

(Incidentally BCS is the reason I resubbed to Netflix as I felt guilty for downloading it when it's so damn good and it's a Netflix production. I often go weeks without watching a single thing on Netflix but maintain my subscription as I think the content is worth it when I do watch.)

Also, Better Call Saul isn't a Netflix production. It's made by AMC and Sony, the same as made Breaking Bad. Netflix bought the UK streaming rights, is all.

I agree with Hearty: read a summary. I didn't take heed and totally forgot exactly who Mike was going to pop.

Overall it was great. I forgot how much I hate Chuck; the actor is doing a tremendous job of making me hate him. More of this type of thing please.

It was interesting also that some slow lingering shots can really add to the atmosphere without feeling like a vain attempt to be all kooky and arthouse and shit. I'm looking at you Neon demon.

S03E02 was superb. I realise this sounds like a back-handed compliment but it's almost daringly slow sometimes, totally sucks you into the characters and the situation, and then time fucking bends and the end credits roll and you're like, 'Eh, not already, I NEED MORE BETTER CALL SAUL DAMMIT'.

Lovely opening sequence with Mike too, not a single word spoken for the first ten minutes or so?

Yes I wondered that myself. Everything in the programme is so deliberate so there must be a reason for it but considering Jimmy's background as a hustler/con artist sort of chap, that kind of thing really shouldn't faze him at all.

Regarding Mike and his radio-fettling:

I understood ultimately what he was trying to achieve by turning the tracker on themselves, but I don't understand how he did it. How did he do it? I might have been distracted at the time/an idiot.

He bought an identical tracker and replaced the one on his car for that one. Then he took their tracker and connected it to a radio to run the battery down so they would come out to swap it out, only instead of taking their dead one they were taking his.

This weeks episode seemed to shoot by.

Desperate to watch more when it ended, then felt bad that we've only a handful of episodes left this season.

Quality.

Wot Z said.

Was totally absorbed and before I knew it I was looking down the barrel of a 7-day wait for the next ep.

So afterwards I watched Catastrophe. Which continues to be pretty great and made me realise Mark Bonnar's character is due a Better Call Saul-style spin-off himself.

Goodness me S03E05, 'Chicanery', was a stunningly, thrillingly superb episode.

I forgot it was on; saw your post and dived onto the downloadatron. You aren't wrong. What lovely stuff.
