Big Hero 6 had my boy, 4, utterly transfixed. What a great film. We're watching it again this morning.

Ain't no bitches gonna bust no ghosts.

I enjoyed it too, would look forward to watching it again sometime.

Last night's film was 'TOWER', it's an animated documentary about the 1966 Texas University massacre, when a lone gunman climbed to the observation deck of the main campus building's tower, and opened fire with various weapons, including a powerful long-range sniper rifle. Over the course of 90 minutes he killed 14 people and injured 31 others. He had also killed his wife and mother earlier in the day.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universit ... r_shooting

Whilst the majority of the film is animated using the 'rotoscope' technique, there is also a decent amount of archive footage that was shot on the day by news organisations in the town, and also audio of radio news broadcasts from the day itself, along with many photographic stills.

The main characters of the day have their voices played by actors who recorded their voices for the animated realisations of the people onscreen (reading from interviews with the actual people), however, towards the final third of the film there is an incredible moment where the film cuts away from the animation, to the actual person, saying the same words. (Some of the people from the day are still alive now, and recorded video interviews for the film.)

From then on the film does this several more times, with the film cutting away from the animation, to a video interview of the actual people we've been watching in the animation. It's amazingly powerful.

Unfortunately some of the other characters died (in one case quite recently), but there is a video of the man talking in 2012 about the day in question, which is used.

What struck me most is that even though the massacre happened 50 years ago, the people are still visibly traumatised and have been profoundly changed by what happened that day. Particularly there is a pregnant woman who was shot, and also her partner who was walking with her. Her partner was killed, and she lost her baby, and speaking about it fifty years later she says she still wonders what the life of her child would have been like, who died in her womb that day. (She was never able to conceive again.)

One common thread is that the people involved weren't really given much in the way of help afterwards, and that most of them never saw each other again after the day. The film brought some of these people together again for the first time in fifty years, and their reactions to each other are incredible to watch.

My rambling description really isn't doing this film justice, it's a stunningly powerful and effective piece of cinema, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

One final note though, the film is almost entirely about the victims, the killer himself is scarcely even named or discussed, so whilst given the subject matter it is necessarily upsetting, the film nonetheless remains hopeful, and focuses on the incredibly brave and selfless actions of various people on the day.

945/1000 - Be advised that you will 'get dust in your eyes' more than once.

Free Fire: The latest and most straightforward film from Ben Wheatley of Kill List, High Rise and Sightseers fame. Despite being basically just a single shootout stretched out to feature length it never loses momentum and the fact that everyone involved seems to be having the most fun helps to carry it all along. It doesn't have the lasting impact of his previous more batshit films but it's good dirty fun.
Ghost In The Machine: Disclaimer: I've never watched or read any other version of the story so I'm taking this as it's own thing rather than a remake or whatever. It looked lovely as you'd expect and was generally well acted throughout but fucking hell, it's never even stood in the same room as someone who might know how to spell the word 'subtle'. Right from the start it batters you over the head with anything it thinks you might need to know e.g. right down to a doctor defining the contextual meaning of the words 'ghost' and 'shell' within the very first spoken lines of dialogue in the film. It's also not as stylish as the trailer made it look and outwith certain scenes it has a quite generic 'future city' style to it it all. Nice looking but utterly insubstantial about sums it up.

I've just watched Drive.

It felt like it was all in slow motion and could have done with being 40 minutes shorter.

Not very good.

I absolutely love Drive, seen it several times and will do so again at some point.

You just need to let it get into you and get inside the world, and also realise that you're watching a superhero film rather than a 'normal' film, if you will.

(That's not my interpretation by the way, the director himself has explicitly said it's a superhero movie.)

It's a lovely, magnificent film.

Best way to watch it is in a pitch black room with headphones on and the volume dialled up to 11.

I love Niclas Winding Refn out whatever is name is, but only god forgives is shit. Seems like a caricature of his own films.

The Neon Demon, on another hand, is even better than drive. Valhalla rising is also great.

Only God Forgives is his masterpiece.

The Neon Demon is his first film I didn't like, and it felt that all the inaccurate criticisms people made of his previous work actually applies to Neon Demon. It's all style over substance, and has pretty shallow themes not really explored in a particularly interesting way.

I read all that and I get it, but I shouldn't have to read a long explanation to enjoy a film.

I'll stick with my original thoughts in that it's not very good.

Yeah, but it's also bollocks. Lots of films can look nice but be rubbish. If you combine style with substance then that's great, but you cannot simply replace substance with style unless you like hollow nonsense.

That depends on how "nice" it looks. Prometheus looks nice but it isn't enough to wholly carry the movie. And I kinds like Prometheus.

The neon demon is absolutely beautiful that it doesn't need anything else.

Some paintings need some context and concept to work. Some can work purely based on aesthetics. Don't see this as being any different.

Thank fuck the new rating system has landed because five whole stars was far too much to cope with.

50/50 gets 786 thumbs up out of 1000.

Quite formulaic in a lot of ways but did it with enough heartfelt self-confidence and honesty to be a thoroughly decent watch without getting schmaltzy.

It was very well made but it almost played out like a 'beginner's guide to cancer', and as I'd imagine is the case for most folks my age, I've seen enough real cancer around me (although fortunately not actually in me, yet) to not need a film to take me through how it tends to pan out.

It's a bit like Rain Man, which used to be my favourite film, and then I tried to rewatch it a few years ago (by which point I was raising an autistic daughter) and was like, 'Hmmm, this seems rather banal now, I know all this, and the savant angle is overly twee'. I turned it off about halfway through, not because it was 'too painful', but because I was bored of watching Dustin Hoffman doing a really good turn as an autistic man.

That's not to say that both 50/50 and Rain Man aren't great films, back in 1988 Rain Man was one of the first mainstream media portrayals of autism and you could say was worthy on that basis alone, and 50/50 is a fairly solid, honest portrayal of what happens when someone is diagnosed with cancer (albeit someone from a well-heeled middle class lifestyle with seemingly amazing healthcare, I'm not quite sure how poor people would get on in that situation) - it did all the right things, in most of the right ways, but it didn't knock me sideways or anything.

I tell you what film I've never seen but was absolutely fascinating: Apollo 13.

I can't believe I've missed this but watching it in 2017 was no less interesting despite the advances in CGI (the CGI is a little noticeable in places y'see). In fact the most interesting thing about watching this was how The Martian, years later, aped the science bits and jingoistic rubbish for that make believe story. Oh, and how the dialogue was taken directly from the transcripts.

Hanks was as good as he ever is.

Bill Paxton was great (RIP).

Kevin Bacon had a great subdued performance too as the rookie thrown in at the last minute.

Kevin out of 10.

Yeah it's just a really great telling of an amazing sequence of real life events. I think that's why I found The Martian to be a bit of an odd one. It started off being really quite low key and realistic and very much reminded me of Apollo 13 except it all felt a bit weird because you knew it was all just totally made up, there wasn't the hook of knowing that it all actually happened. And so then it had nowhere to go except to build towards its crescendo of borderline nonsensical utter improbability.

I also watched that The Neon Demon after the rattle above about it. I didn't like it much but it made me want to read commentary about it after I'd finished.

While the scene with the sexy red head having a lovely lesbian lady orgasm atop a corpse seems to get a lot of attention not nearly enough attention is given to how large her areolas looked through her tight tops.

That's my review.

Apparently that corpse raping scene was improvised by the actress. She was just supposed to kiss the corpse :-)

Judging by your comment, I should watch that scene again

I found the opposite to be the case. I thought the trailer looked pretty good, but when he comes out with crappy lines like that, it just makes me cringe. I get that he'd pick up bits of stuff from his time on earth. I know it's all comic book stuff but it irks me when characters have lines that could be said by any character. I never read the comics though, so I don't know how much humour there is in them.

Well that was fucking great. As in terrible great. Should have been a cottage film.

I think the film title should really have given a fairly strong indication of the quality...

Looks to me like they're getting ready for a Planet Hulk. Thor Ragnarok trailer is quite excellent.

There's also another 'international' trailer here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGDdv88uJsQ

I dunno. I think the opposite, because the line is only there and is only funny because of who says it. The whole point of the line is that he picks up things from Earth but then uses them inappropriately. It would be less funny if said by others (though running it by in my mind, maybe Hawkeye or Iron Man could get away with it too, though in a cynical fashion).

That's fair enough. I think the humour in the Marvel films is rather lost on me - I'm the one sat stony-faced in the cinema while everyone cracks up. :) (The two scenes in the Avengers with Hulk punching Thor and battering Loki spring to mind)

I tell you what film I've never seen but was absolutely fascinating: Apollo 13.

Jem and I had a (short) conversation about this after visiting The Science Museum yesterday.

It occurred to me that you get films like Apollo 13, The Martian, Hidden Figures etc. but (and I could well be wrong) there's never been a "blockbuster" film made about Apollo 11 - arguably mankind's greatest achievement.

Even assuming that the Apollo 11 mission was executed flawlessly from start to finish with little drama, there must be enough there to get a decent 2 hour film out of, surely?

Thor's always had a 'fish-out-of-water' thing going on.
