GJ has been having "issues" with her laptop, one of which is that Windows Update has been refusing to update (from what I could see it was just failing to install the anniversary edition). Fortunately, it finally decided that it could install that update earlier and that's when the problem started.

Once Windows has started, you don't seem to be able to do anything (I have manged to get Task Manager up, which doesn't really indicate much of an issue, apart from 100% disk usage for a while), but other than that nothing. I've tried System Restore, but it hasn't been turned on, so there's nothing to restore. I can't get a command prompt up (oh, I can from the troubleshooting options, but I'm not actually sure what to do now I'm there), and it doesn't want to boot into safe mode (choosing any of the safe mode options just seems to freeze the laptop at the initial Fujitsu logo screen). Next step seems to be a system repair, (I've just tried the Start-up Repair option, but it said it couldn't repair anything), which seems like a last resort, is there anything I've missed?

I think it's this one which I found in the second link you posted. Seems like there's a solution, but I'll have to do a bit more reading tomorrow to work out how I manage to use the laptop long enough to actually implement it.
Cheers.

Given that windows wouldn't actually let me do anything, I left it reverting to its previous state overnight, which at least seems to have got it into a usable state.
I'll have a bit more of a read through those links to try and pre-empt any issues with the anniversary update, but the reddit did seem to descend into a load of different solutions which some people claimed fixed their problems, but for others it didn't. Even better were the ones where it seemed to fix their problem, but then it came back.

This is a job for another day, I think. Thanks again for pointing me in the right sort of direction.

You're welcome. Microsoft screwed the pooch on the anniversary update. Or SP1 as it should have been called

Thanks for your help Davpaz. I can now access and use the laptop. It's been backed up to the hilt just in case!

Hi guys!

TechnoKnight MaliA of The Northern Wastes has just rudden into town. He needs YOUR HELP to fix The Laptop. Then, he can regurgitate The Knowledge, claim it as his own, be the hero, and we will all learn something.

The Laptop is a HP Envy running Windows 10. The onboard wireless connects to sky router, andd is sometines fine, but will regularly switch off and says "no internet". Power saving for the wireless is off.

Any ideas?

MrsA thanks you in advance

How regularly is regularly? Are you in the same room as the router? When was the router last power cycled?

Looking to see if there's newer drivers for the laptop wireless isn't a bad first step.

Does it stay connected to the network but give the yellow warning triangle and say 'no internet' or does it disconnect completely? Is it set to auto connect? Do all other devices work fine during the outage?

Gets yellow warning triangle with "no internet" , is set to connect automatically, everything else fine.

If you right click and troubleshoot it it will try to repair your connection. Also might say what's wrong.

Oh I had a similar problem - assumed it was the inbuilt wifi dying so I bought a wireless dongle, which worked fine til I smashed it up so I reverted back to inbuilt wifi and it's never done it since.

That probably offers no useful information whatsoever :D

I would suggest making sure the wifi thingymabob drivers and Windows 10 are up to date if you haven't already...

Go to device manager > uninstall device (deleting drivers). Then scan for hardware changes.

Oh, you'll need to be on a wired connection before you do this.

Do these outages possible coincide with a microwave going on, or a hoover, or a wireless landline call, or anything else that has the potential to give out interference?

So it stays connected to the router, but no internet? And other devices get the internet ok? You haven't got DNS manually configured on the laptop, have you?

Now, the stupid thing will only charge if lid is down.

Going to buy a new one, but not HP on this experience.

If it only charges with the lid down have you looked at your power options in the control panel?

Not necessarily - my 11" MacBook Air hasn't booted into anything but Windows in years.
