Yes. It was looking to be quite high (5.8%) so i used tap water to dilute it down. It should be 4.4%ish now.

Suppose so i never really think to what they turn out as actually being (unless i follow a reicipe). I threw all my black malt away as I was adding it to everythibg.

Final gravity was 1004 which is 5.4%. Didn't expect it to go that far.

Could do. I have calender time.

I can stick a 40pint kit on and slam it into lemonade bottles, or I could try to work something up from grain. Or both.

I do have a book of clone receipes so might try to make old Hooky or something.

Picked some Damsons last night on the way home so will be doing a batch of Damson Gin. Find that there is more juice in these as they are bigger than sloes so its a nicer drink

Also have enough Quinces to do a batch of Quince Vodka.

Slightly off the topic of homebrew but still on beer I found this online

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-25-Per ... B004GCK1IE

A beer dispenser that you can buy kegs for, looks like a great idea until you break the prices down.

Best part of £200 for the dispenser, then £30-35 for 6 litre kegs, that's costing around £3 a pint so a bit pricy

Also I'm not a big fan of strong EU lagers and most of the kegs you can buy are those

Shame as I like the idea of it!

I made blackcurrant gin last year, without any added sugar (unlike sloe gin). It was delicious, a really refreshing drink with tonic.

Homebrew Club being talked about at the (Guardian recommended) Micropub. This is exciting, but might clash with NerdRunner

Homebrew night was superb. Everyone was really enthusiastic and had brought things to sample. I learnt a lot (put bag of marbles in hop bag to stop it floating, use cafetierre to make a hop tea). Will go again. Clashed with netrunner. Ended up shitfaced

Doing a SMaSH to night. "what is a SMaSH,. MaliA you are thing?" Asks no body E we, but I tell them anyway. A SMaSH is a Single Malt Single Hop beer. It is dead simple to do and stuff like that. I will use new hop method, too!

Ingredients! 2kg Maris Otter malt, 50g Chinook hops, US-05 yeast .

Going to mash malt in 7 litres 65 degree water, and sparge with 6. Add 30g hops to cafetierre in 80 degree water and leave whilst wort boils. Pour in hops and set it up again. Pour in remainder 55 mins after boiling. Chill, then pitch yeast. Ferment, bottle then drink.

The result last night was 10 litres of all grain single hopped Chinook beer which should end up between 4-4.5℅ and 20 litres of the kit Hoppy Copper which should be 4℅.

To make it a bit more Hoppy smelling, I made a hop tea so we will see how that goes.

Um.
Funny story. I found an O ring in the sink. Which should have been between the tap and the keg.

It has come out at 4.9℅. But not a lot of aroma, though.

On the left is the batch primed kit with the hop tea added to it. On the right, the all grain smash. The smash tastes a bit green still, but seems to be conditioning ok but hasn't carbonated.. The kit with the hop tea still isn't that aromatic, so next is to dry hop. Oh, and, um, a slug crawled up the spigot of the keg. I popped it out and cleanwd it with a baby wipe. Seems ok

Busy night so far... Dry hopped with First Gold a Golden Ale kit from Wilko. And set off an amber ale (400g munich caramalt 1, 2kg maris otter, 50g pilgrim hops at start of boil, 50g dry hopping).

Dry hopping is when i broke my cafetierre and want to go to bed so just pour the hops on to the top of the wort rather than make a hop tea.

It's going like the clappers! Look at all that bulge! The OG was 1054, so I suspect this will top 6℅ every 20 seconds, the bubble trap gurgles and lovely aroma floats over! This is fermenting in the dining room, which is lots warmer than the kitchen.

The AllGrain Amber Pilgrim is currently 5.9℅ and tastes ok from bin. The hopped kit is 3.8℅ and quite light. I am pleased so far.

BORGO BREWING ANNOUNCEMENT!

I have been making 12litres of wort, which then gets boiled down and getting 12 to 14 bottles out at the end of each batch. This was due to only having a 15litre pot to boil stuff in on the hob. Making these batches has taken about 5 hours (2 hours mash and boil, the rest is stuff like straining grain through muslin cloths as a filter). I want more beer, and I want it faster.

I looked into buying a 40litre boiler to boil the wort in and drain it off. These run at about £150. But the, i would need more wort to boil, so I would need a much larger mash tun than my do it all pot. That would be £50 to £80 as I can scavenge loads of stuff from my boxes of bits that might one day prove useful.

Being resourceful/cheap I found out instuctipns on how to make a mash tun and a boiler for about £80. The neat part is they have strainers to catch the bits, and can drain from one to the other. There's only a slight bit of taking apart kettles to stick the elemrnts in a bucket and plugging them in to the mains, but that should be ok.

So, Borgo Brewing will soon DOUBLE CAPACITY!

Exciting times.

I found a calculation that suggested my to be built boiler could take 20mins to get 25litres wort to boiling point. There'll be 2 kettle elements removed from kettles heating this which say 1800-2200 watts output. Does this time sound reasonable? Should I buy another kettle and add a third?

If anything, that's low by my reckoning ( assuming tap water at 10c ) -

25l * 4.2Kj / lc * 90c = 9.45Mj

at 4.5kw, that's 35mins, and that's if you don't lose any heat to the environment.

It'll mash at 65 so, I guess once it hits the boiler maybe 50?

Ahh, in that case 20 mins is possible with 2 x 2200 w elements, but that would be the absolute best case.

It will be more palatable, yes.

I am making some at the moment, initial tastes suggest something between paraffin and liquid hops.

Plumbing for mash tun is complete. PFTE tape helped stop leaks at the joins. Now just need to insulate it. And think about Mk2. This now means I can mash twice as many litres at a time as before, and now I need to make my boiler to boil it all.

I made a batch of homebrew the other week, the following means it tastes a bit strong:
1) Woodforde wherry kit tins x2, dilute to 40 pints - I do 1xtin diluted to 3 litres
2) Normal hop levels 10g/10 pints - I do 75g/3 litres of cascade hop pellets straight into the rxn vessel

currently it is a bit like a hoppy barley wine.

Tonight, I took 2026g Maris Otter Pale Malt and 100g crystal malt and stuffed it into 7.2 litres of water. It mashed at 65 for an hour, then went through The Buckets. A sparge of 5 litres at 80 was left for 15 mins whilst the other wort went on to boil. 30g of Brewer's Gold hops and 25g Chinook wrnt in at the start of the boil. Yes, this could be very bitter. But, worry not. 5 mins from end of boil, I stuck 25g Brambling Cross in ( and two pinches irish moss). Chilled using chiller and diluted it down using tap water from 1058 to 1044 which gave 2 gallons. In 5 days, I will lob 1.3kg frozen blackberries in which ahoild sweeten it a bit and take thw esge from the chinook and brewer's gold hops. And dry hop with 50g Brambling Cross for country hedgerow aroma. From weighing grain to pitching yeast was 4 hours; my bucketinnabucket is driving efficiencies.

Soaked grain in hot water for an hour then drained and began to boil the liquid. Soaked it again for fifteen minutes and added that liquid to the pan and boiled it all for an hour, adding hops to make it taste bitter and something to help make it clearer.
