Watched "Non-Stop".

Gruff voiced Taken star gets his gruff voice on. On a plane!

It's pretty good actually right up until the reveal and the obligatory ridiculous action bit and even more obligatory save the kiddie bit.

If you liked the gruff voiced Taken star talking with his gruff voice IN EUROPE you'll love the gruff voiced Taken star talking with his gruff voice ON A PLANE.

Then I'll love it.

Kevin Costner is having a go at being a gruff voiced Taken star in 3 Days To Kill.

I've not seen it.

Heh, I saw a poster for this on a bus this morning (the first time I've even heard anything about it at all) and my very first thought was 'Taken clone'.

Me too. It had "From the producers of Taken" written on it, in fairness.

Lol, that didn't even register with me; I thought I'd looked at the picture and read the title then just thought 'Taken' but obviously the connection was a lot less subtle than that and my brain is just a bit crap.

Costner is good, the action bits are generally good, the family drama bits are shit (and they account for a large portion of the film).
Watchable but instantly forgettable. Taken it ain't (it's better than Taken 2 but then, what isn't ?)

P.S. Saw Edge Of Tomorrow yesterday (2D version, cheers Bluecup !).

Really enjoyed it. It's far from original and steals ideas from several films - Groundhog Day / Source Code, Aliens, even Saving Private Ryan to an extent.

It's really well made though and damn entertaining. Almost never a boring moment, good FX, decent story, some great humour, & Cruise is on his A-game here.

Won't be winning any awards but for a summer block-buster it's a cut above the usual dross.

8/10.

I thought the first 300 to be a gay movie, and not a particularly good one.

I'm kind of with Miki on Edge of tomorrow. Certainly the second spoiler. My overall opinion was that it was good but not amazing. Perfectly fine whilst it's on but no lingering effect. Not something I'd feel desperate to watch again.

Needed more scenes of Emily Blunt being awesome in the armour... though maybe I could watch that scene of her getting up from the floor over and over again.

Saw Edge of Tomorrow last night.

I really enjoyed it. Derivative as others have said, in much the same way Oblivion was, but it had enough of it's own personality to maintain the momentum throughout.

It had quite a lot of decent laughs in as well which I was surprised about.

Overall I will take that as my sci fi blockbuster over any Transformers bollocks.

I think I liked Oblivion just a little bit more than Edge of Tomorrow, though EOT was good. Something missing somewhere.

22 Jump Street is one of the best films this year. Superbly funny and more clever than you might expect from the trailer. May even be better than the first film.

If you enjoyed the Lego Movie then this is very much in that vein.

I liked 21 Jump Street much more than I thought I would. Not hugely clever or new or anything, but fun and and the right sort of daft and without the nastiness that some comedies can have. I shall watch the sequel!

When I saw the trailer I thought it would be vastly inferior to the first. Going more bawdy and lewd. It really doesn't (though there are bawdy and lewd moments). It's one of the funniest films I've ever seen and really does have that lego movie atmosphere.

Yesterday I saw Belle which was quite a nicely put together period drama with a nice undercurrent of slavery abolition. Particularly well acted by Tom Wilkinson.

Also I saw by quite stark contrast, A Million Ways to Die In The West. Despite going in wanting to hate it, I was ultimately won over by it being more clever than expected. It could have done without so much of the bawdy and lewd humour and been a much more sophisticated funny film instead but it's still good. Does quite a nice line in a sweet romance tale too as well as quite traditional western. Liam Neeson plays it particularly straight which is quite excellent. A surprise.

American Hustle was pretty good, but it felt like it went on forever.

Still, Batman, Hawkeye, Lois Lane, Rocket Raccoon and Mystique all acted really well.

Just watched "THE RAID 2 - BERANDAL" (via dubious means).

I was a big fan of the first one, a tight Indonesian action film (though directed and stunt-choreographed by a Welsh bloke !)

It had very little plot, just some basic build-up and then fight, fight, fight basically.
Very impressive fights though with the sort of raw brutality that a Hollywood film wouldn't touch.

The sequel is more ambitious. It's 2.5 hours long and has a proper plot / story.
Regarding the story, it's just ok. It's about a rookie cop who goes undercover to infiltrate mob gangs.
Been done loads of times before, and often better (Scorsese this ain't) but the plot is serviceable enough and the acting decent.

But the fights !

They are introduced gradually and become more frequent as the film goes on.
They start off at around the same level of quality as the first film (ie. excellent) but become insanely good towards the end.

Basically, an utterly superb action / fighting film if you don't mind a bit of gore & putting up with some cliched story developments & a somewhat long running time. Way more intense that the usual PG-13, CGI-enhanced action stuff that Hollywood tends to produce.

Action film of the year for me so far, & I can't imagine anything beating it in the next 6 months.

I saw Oculus yesterday. Which was quite good in that it was a BOO! scare film (despite a few shocks). Mostly it was the general creepiness more in common with the likes of Dream Demon. For example.

Only problem is that even though not necessarily an awful lot happened in it there was still a feeling of rush and there was a little difficulty at times latching onto it.

Karen Gillan Was very good and suitably different to Amy Pond. The dialogue delivery was very gabbly though and sometimes difficult to follow. Oh and few people do demented quite as well as Katee Sackhoff

Also saw the Raid sequel last night...brilliant. As stated above the plot is fairly cliched (It kept reminding me of 'Sleeping Dogs'...which itself is inspired by several dozen Asian crime films) but the action is sublime and while it does use some ingenious camera angles you can always tell what's going on, which is more than we can say for most action films.

THEY CAME TOGETHER (ooh-err !).

From the trailer, you might be forgiven from thinking this is a typical romantic comedy with some adult humour tacked on.

It's actually a very funny piss-take / satire of typical cliched romantic comedies.
In particular, it makes fun of Meg Ryan films like Sleepless in Seattle & You've Got Mail (which I think helped establish a bland crowd-pleasing format that many more recent films have copied).

I hate romantic comedies in general but I've been forced to see quite a few by different girlfriends over the years &, with the knowledge gained from them, I laughed out loud at this several times.

If you actually like typical bland "Rom-Coms" then you're opinion may vary....

8/10 from me though.

Saw 22 Jump Street last night.

"Fuck you, doves"

Throwaway excellent stuff like the first one and some really genuinely laugh out loud scenes.

As good as the first one I would say.

Just watched TRANSCENDENCE (Johnny Depp sci-fi movie).

The trailer got me excited.

The final film was...well, kind of interesting (I was never really bored), but it also felt a bit flat.

Some nice visuals here & there, some interesting plot-points here & there, but mostly it was all a bit bland.

I think the 19% critic rating it has on Rotten Tomatoes is a bit harsh but, for me, it's a film that I found vaguely entertaining but would never want to watch again. Not dreadful but not particularly good either....
I'd give it a 5 or 6 out of 10.

I've watched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time anime too. It had a hint of the Ghibli about it. Man, I really enjoyed that.

I might get back into anime films again since, like, school? :S Jesus that was a long time ago...

I'd be interested to see what you think of 5 Centimeters Per Second. I thought it looked and sounded gorgeous, but was expecting, well, more stuff to happen. The first story was good, though.

I watched Project X again on Friday night after a fucking horrible week at work.
Every time I thought about it over the weekend (while I was still working) it made me happy.

It might be my favorite film.

Amazon keep fucking about with the Evangelion X.XX release dates. The latest one was, after resetting it to august, sending me two emails in quick succession - 'now we have no idea when 3.33 is out' and 'hahaha, not really. January 2015. Oh!'

Yeah, I really liked it for it's mood / tone, though I didn't completely understand it (I can say the same for several David Lynch movies).

This excellent personal interpretation of its meaning is well worth a look if you feel the same way. Seems legit ! :

I'd be interested to see what you think of 5 Centimeters Per Second. I thought it looked and sounded gorgeous, but was expecting, well, more stuff to happen. The first story was good, though.

Well that's made me feel melancholy.

Was there more than 2 episodes and a third episode masquerading as a song?

I really liked the first episode. I sharn't ever repeat this to anyone ever except on this forum but when I was a lad my first love, my first real love, moved to Austria as an au pair. We sent each other an abundance of letters (before email was a thing) for a 2 year period and I've kept each and everyone that she sent me. They're in my wardrobe in the same blue box that I stored them with each letter in the envelope it came in. I've never read any of them more than once and I'm scared that if I do I'll love her all over again. I went over there a few times to see her and we went skiing and we went around the little Austrian towns and villages in the snow and drank hot chocolate with marshmallows. I couldn't say her name for weeks after she left and cried like a baby the first time I left her to get on the plane to come home. I didn't cry at the airport (I waited on the plane for that) but I knew from her face that she would cry while she drove back to the house she was staying.

I got a phone call one in the summer. She was supposed to be coming back to England for good but she didn't want to. She said that she was confused about our relationship since, if I wasn't enough of a reason for her to come back, then maybe our relationship wasn't enough. I got off the phone and knew that our relationship was over. All that waiting.

So, yes, I did enjoy 5 Centimetres Per Second. I could relate wholeheartedly and now I'm infinitely sad because of a cartoon. I got older just like the characters and just like the characters I still think about her every now and again several years later.
