I can't see anywhere what the price will be, people have been saying that prime is going up (to the price I am paying at the moment) but I can't see where that is on the Amazon website.

Is there a link to what the deal with the price is?

Kindle Lending Library is a bit poor, it only works on Kindle devices

Amazon are happy to let me buy books and use them on a Ipad with the Kindle App but won't let me use the library

Yeah, the lending library is absolutely terrible. Last time I looked you couldn't even browse it on a non-Kindle device.

Mrs Doc just "checks books out" of the American library closest to her sister's address (which is where her American stuff is all registered at). Great selection of titles, totally free, and they deliver electronically in seconds to my Kindle account (which she shares). It's quite the deal.

Some UK councils allow you to check out library books for Kindle. Bedford does, for instance (although I've never done it).

I've just set my Prime to not auto-renew, £80 a year is a bit too steep for free postage and a crappy streaming service I'll never use...

Had another look at the Prime Video today and it has improved, before the launch date they had 7 documentaries now there are lots more.

They also have a number of films that are on Netflix, but over all its not as good, that said its less than 50% of the cost.

I'm beginning to wonder about the Prime next day delivery and if its worth it. On several Amazon purchases recently the seller had a Prime and None Prime price for the same thing, it was around £4 more for Prime so I wonder in many cases is postage just added to the Prime price???

"Next day delivery" is true about a third of the time for us it seems. No way I'll be paying £80 next year. I only let it renew this time by accident.

Had I not accidentally just renewed Prime, I would cancel it. Unreliable as often run by Yodel et al.

I think in the 18 months or so that I've had it, I've had about 3-4 deliveries not turn up next day. Everything else has been fine, and we pretty much do all Christmas and Birthday present shopping on there these days

Every time I've had a late delivery I've complained and got an extra month added on.

Right,

We were intrigued by this, so we've now got Prime, but really wanted to see the Prime Instant Video offering.

We started off accessing it through our Sony Bravia, which meant we had to register the device to the account. A bit weird, but it turns out that just means you need to sign in with your Amazon account.

It then shows you the full range of Amazon Instant Video.

"Cool, all three seasons of Game of Thrones. Netflix doesn't have that."<click>
"Oh, £1.89 per episode."

<Research>

It turns out there's a difference between Amazon Instant Video and prime Instant Video.

The Prime Video, which you get as a Prime account holder gets you all the Prime video to stream for free, but that's around 2000 films, and 900 TV shows. The app, however, shows you all the videos from Amazon Instant Video, that you can buy or rent.

So with no way to browse through without knowing which is free and which will still charge us, it seems a bit shit.

No, massively shit.

And is one of those the same as what used to be LoveFilm's streaming service? Or is that a separate thing entirely? Who knows! They've made a real cunt of this in my opinion.

Amazon Instant Video is actually called Amazon LoveFilm Instant Video.

Prime appears to be a sub-set.

Do I recall it saying somewhere that they were doing a 'match' thing on any DVDs you bought? So in addition to whatever's on Prime Instant Video, anything you've bought as a DVD is also free to download. Or have I completely made that up?

I've not heard of that. Are you sure you're not confusing that with AutoRip?

Well that's what I mean - I read somewhere that they were doing the same thing as Autorip, but for films.

That was six months ago. I'm sure I'd seen (or dreamed) a more recent, more solid reference than that.

It's the only thing that makes sense. Or they're banking on enough people being lazy and forgetting to cancel auto-renew.

Well by raising the price by 60% they can afford for 40% of people to cancel...?

What about the additional costs of providing the digital movie and book service? That can't be zero.

I was having a chat about online retailing and the cost of deliveries is pretty small compared to the return visits that occur when a delivery pass is bought. It's, apparently, a really good method of customer retention.

Yep, totally. I used to shop around for the best prices before I took Prime out. Once I did, I felt I had to get my money's worth by using it often.

It's a bit of a con really.

I've just logged in using the PS3 app formerly known as Lovefilm; there is a clearly marked section called 'Prime Instant Video'. Seems straightforward enough.

So every single thing you can see in that app is free? No mixing in of the pay per view stuff?

No, there's a movie and tv section where you can buy stuff too, but the Prime section is where all the 'free' stuff is.

Then I am annoyed that they have put a sub standard version of an app on our TV. The tits.

Will check but pretty sure there is only free stuff on the Xbox One app.

My mate was having a look through it and found Mad Men, I have told him that we enjoy it so he thought he would add it to his watch list and see what his wife thought

He said they didn't have S1, it started at S2 :D

I also have a Prime account via my department credit card for small purchases, so I could bin my prime off and add myself as a family member as we will renew that.

I switched our Lovefilm account over to Prime last night because it pretty much forced me to. As I was fiddling with it I went in to check out what they had available and, when trying to play something in HD, was told that I didn't qualify for an HD stream because I wasn't using an HDCP compatible connection (the PC in question uses VGA to the monitor). Which is fucking stupid because (a) what kind of sense does it make to only try and protect an HD stream of something, it's not like people don't pirate SD material at all and (b) Netflix don't pull this shit which means that Amazon have needlessly bent over for the studios in a way that negatively impacts my use of their service. Essentially telling me that I need to go out and buy a whole new monitor just to watch the shit I'm paying for is madness enough, but the fact that their main competitor in the same space wouldn't require me to do so makes for a very poor comparison between the two.

I looked at this the other night. There's nothing there for me really. It probably doesn't help that anything I wanted to see that wasn't on Netflix I've just downloaded anyway.

Given that I have accidentally renewed Prime recently, I checked this out. The choice isn't fantastic, but there's a load of stuff for kids and a few movies I'll watch. Not worth the money at present, but maybe if you use the Prime service a lot.

You can stream from a browser and there are dedicated apps for things like the PS3.

The PS3 Lovefilm Instant app quietly updated to Amazon Prime Video on my dashboard last week. It has a lot of the same content as Netflix, sadly.
