I suppose economics play a part, its no doubt expensive to host a trial and then if he gets jailed that costs money to keep him in there.

Why bother with any of that when you can get a huge fine from billionaire law breakers and everyone wins :DD

Surprised there were no posts for the last race where Rosberg decided to wipe Hamilton out.

Anyway, some great driving in Italy at the moment. Hamilton recovering from a terrible start to lead, great racing from Perez and a storming series of moves from Ricciardo.

Yeah, Rosberg took the Schumacher inspiration a bit too far, there. I read he has been fined some 6-digit amount, but he hasn't been penalised points-wise in any way so as far as he is concerned, he got away with it.

Anyways, according to my quick calculations, if Hamilton stays on form he will only need 3 races to catch up with Rosberg so it's still very open.

I think your calculations are wrong - assuming Rosberg continues to come second, Hamilton has to win every race remaining.

1st place gets 25 points and 2nd gets 18. So every time Hamilton wins and Rosberg gets second, Hamilton catches up by 7 points.

Rosberg now has 238 points and Hamilton has 216, so that's a difference of 22 points. In 3 races Hamilton would have gained 21 points on Rosberg.

What am I doing wrong?

Clearly Damon is a dick that can't count (I think it was him that said it).

That'll teach me to regurgitate what I hear on TV.

Actually, under the same assumption that Rosberg will always be second if Hamilton wins (or vice versa), he would still need to win 5 out of the 6 remaining races to end up on top, so he really does have to be the fastest for the remainder of the season or have a bit of luck come his way.

Schumacher has left hospital to return home, apparently.

Considering the amount of care he could afford, that doesn't mean he's better.

No more driving advice for drivers allowed from Singapore onward.

Allowed

- Telling a driver when he is allowed to or meant to stop for new tyres

- Team orders in terms of overtaking or letting a team-mate past

- Warning a driver about the traffic situation during qualifying and the race

- Safety warning relating to yellow flags or dangerous situations on the track

Not allowed

- Informing a driver to change any settings on his car to improve its performance

- Informing a driver about his fuel consumption and how to manage his pace

- Informing a driver about his own performance in sectors and where he can improve

- Informing a driver about the condition or state of his tyres

- Informing a driver how best to approach the formation lap or setting changes to make better start

Interesting, and I don't disagree with any of those banned topics in principle. However, teams will just update the steering wheel to show more data I'm sure.

However I wish they'd stop fucking around midseason when there is no apparent singificant mischief happening.

I think that would still come under the "communication" heading.

I don't think it's a problem at all. They seem to be desperate to make it to an individual sport rather than a team one.

Maybe next year the driver will have to hop out and change his own tyres.

I like it! I'd actually ban all radio communications completely once the driver is out there. Pit boards are ok.

I foresee problems, given quite how much the car is designed round those kinds of capabilities. It's the sort of change that should be done between seasons, not in the middle of one.

I'd imagine that a steering wheel display showing data generated by the car would be OK. If there's a bounceback to base to process the data first that would be an issue.

Ban pit crews. Just give a driver a car and a trailer at the start of the season and let him get on with it.

From formula1.com:

Quote:
Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has informed the teams that they must refrain from making pit-to-car radio transmissions relating to the performance of the car or driver.

The move follows recent media scrutiny about the amount of information being given to drivers by their race engineers, particularly in terms of how they can gain lap time.

F1 race director Charlie Whiting underlined the fact that Article 20.1 of the sporting regulations - which states that "the driver must drive the car alone and unaided" - must be respected at all times.

“No radio conversation from pit to driver may include any information that is related to the performance of the car or driver,” Whiting wrote.

“We should also remind you that data transmission from pit to car is specifically prohibited by Article 8.5.2 of the F1 Technical Regulations.”

The directive will be enforced from next week’s race in Singapore, round 14 of the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship.

My emphasis. Which I guess means that they couldn't just show this stuff on the steering wheel display as has been suggested.

It also suggests that there hasn't actually been any change in the rules, merely clarification of interpretation.

Apart from that, though, and the slightly silly pitstops, I thought it was all rather good as auto racing goes, certainly no worse than Formula 1. What a ridiculous move by Nico Prost at the end, he sure didn't look very proud about it either. The whole race is on YouTube for anyone interested in watching it. I am already looking forward to the next one.

I thought it was utter bobbins.

Far too uniform*. Too slow, Wank music, The rather unsporting idea of fanboost, dull circuit, rather stupidly thought out pitstops (Aside from the entire car changeover thing, the fact that they were timed over the entire pitlane rather than the time in garage can obviously lead to shenanigans - get out quickly to block and then go slowly - completely negating the safety aspect). Oh, and obviously unsafe curbs and drivers who just don't seem to be good enough to make it to F1 despite their famous name.

* - Uniform acceleration, uniform breaking, uniform handling etc etc. Didn't really add anything to the feeling that anything could happen.

What Dave said. I also have a horrible feeling that the rubbish track was chosen specifically because the cars don't go that fast. Put them on a real race track and they're going to look really slow.

I think they'd be much better off with a pair of sprint races rather than one long one where they have to swap cars, which is properly absurd.

Also I'm surprised they didn't give them boatloads of mechanical grip so they wouldn't need so much downforce, thus allowing them to go a bit quicker.

Which is pretty much what the ban should've been in the first place. Drivers aren't engineers and the cars aren't designed for them to be as such. Moreso given the way that getting it wrong can impact multiple races.

I find it utterly unsurprising that the sports foremost senile old dolt was behind it all.

So Hamilton was just reminded that he has new brakes. Isn't that against these new regulations? Or do they only apply during the race?

Is it on the telly?

They're probably not replaying the crash until they know what the situation is. I remember when Senna crashed and all the replays and speculation around that, they were taking the twitch of his head that was visible to be a good sign that he was alive, but it turned out that was a spasm and he was already dead. (IIRC he suffered three separate massive injuries, any one of which would have been fatal.)

Apparently the lack of helicopter was because it couldn't fly in the storm. I'm not sure there were any TV shots from the copter in the race either.
