I don't often watch F1 anymore, but I tuned in for this to see how the 'new era' would start. It was OK but I still found myself getting distracted and idly checking my phone and using the ipad.

Some of the droopy-willy nosed cars are really ugly, but then there are also some lovely paintjobs. I liked hearing the whooshy turbo (at least, I think that's what I was hearing) but the engines were a bit drony and seemed a little flat. Overall I missed the sound. I wonder if it was any better in person, as of course it was coming through my little TV speakers.

The rotating-camera view from under the front near the wheel was ace. Is that new? It was cool.

The difference in engine noise from the front line. Through my new headphones (thanks Royal Rumble!) the first bit is unbearable.

I do like 2014 engine noise as it's not going to deafen me and also you can pick out sounds from the engine. Sounds a bit futuristic too, like a scene from Star Wars. Although 2013 does sound more scary.

I think I'll miss the loud prestart and start. Somehow less exciting now.

FTFM

Apparently Bernie is horrified by the new engine sound and is looking to get it changed already!

Honestly, the changes over the years have reduced me from not missing a single session to, only bothering to watch short highlights.

Oversll, I view these engines as a positive, but its not really going to absolve all the bullshit that's already in place.

I loved the V12s. I didn't really.like the V10s. The V8s sounded like shit - presumably because of the rev limit.

I watched a bit of the highlights and from button's in-car thought it sounded brilliant, far meatier than any 1.6 I've heard before and the strangled regen-dump off-throttle is well.sci-fi.

Given how much I disliked the sound of V8s the trackside noise was far more pleasant too.

Yeah, Hamilton and Rosberg was excellent stuff, the safety car couldn't have come at a better time.

Crashes = exciting races.

Far too few crashes and safety cars these days. Obviously I don't want to see people getting hurt but the drivers aren't scared of crashing they are scared of getting punished for getting it six inches wrong when they're going toe to toe.

Stefano Domenicali has left Ferrari, apparently.

Or, at least, he's resigning as Team Principal.

Not surprising. He's been about as impressive a team principal as Martin Whitmarsh was.

I'll be sad to see him go.

Because watching De Montezemelo get pissed off by his team being shit is so heartwarming.

Seems like Vettel is only keen on team orders when they're in his favour. What a little shit he is. Lovely that his teammate passed him anyway.

I'm not convinced. I'll have to dig out some old footage.

Perez and chilton both penalised next race for causing accidents.
Perez 5 place grid penalty, chilton 3. I expect they will need to paint a few extra grid boxes to give max his penalty...

So from next season, safety car restarts will be no more, and any restart after a safety car period will be a standing start from the grid, with the reasoning that 'Rolling restarts aren't exciting enough'.

Since when was the purpose of a safety car period to make the race more exciting?

Yeah, this is a bad idea. Hopefully it'll be quashed before the start of next season.

They should neutralise the reace, then set them off again with the same time gaps that were there when the race was stopped. After eliminating any runners a lap or more down.

Magnetised track, iron floors on the cars. As soon as there is a crash, flick the magnet power switch to on.
