Technically I've realised the first game I finished in 2014 was NSMBU - but, rarely this is a game that I don't really consider that actually finished until you have all of the gold coins. It's by far the most enjoyable part of the game.

And whilst most people have overlooked it due to the repeat of the art style, I have decided it is the best 2D Mario I have ever played. (It was previously NSMB 1 for the original DS - shut up nostalgia nerds)

Target:
As soon as Dark Souls II comes out it will become my focus, so I've till then to get the last 30 coins on NSMBU and finish Zelda: Link through Time.

My list so far:

  1. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
  2. Pikmin 2 (Gamecube)
  3. Heavy Rain (PS3)

So far, so good, but since had already started playing those games before New Year I don't think I'll be able to keep it up.

1. LA Noire + all DLC cases (PC)

An interesting concept, but pretty poorly executed at times. Difficult to empathise with Phelps, and by the time the story got interesting I'd had enough. Would be interested in a sequel though, if it could iron out these problems.

Personally, I thought the first case was great, and it quickly got boring after that. I assume it picked up again, but I had long switched off before then.

I found that it got a bit silly when you selected the 'express mild scepticism' interview choice, and the guy all but calls them dirty lying scumbags and headbutts them repeatedly in the face.

The game makes much more sense when you realise it is actually a sim of a man in the middle of a nervous breakdown.

Makes sense, since it's such a borefest, specially the beginning.

I thought the skyward sword was the one with the boring opening? That took me a few hours and then I gave up once I got to the game proper.
Having said that, this one had all that nonsense where you were stuck as a wolf for ages, and I remember that getting a bit tedious.

I'd even forgotten about the wolf. My main memory is mainly struggling with the controls. Particularly a section shooting things while on horseback.

They both had pretty boring openings to be honest. At least Twilight Princess became fun if you pressed on; Skyward Sword was turgid shite.

If we're talking Zelda for a minute, has anyone played the Oracles of... Games on the GBC? The originals go for silly money on eBay but I'm wondering if I should get them on the E shop?

I was playing through one of them on an emulator on my phone, but stopped for some random reason. Played like the original nes game.

I played them both quite a way into the game via an emulator but got bored they were not as good as either the original GB game or the later GBA games - if your looking for a portable Zelda after you've finished ALBW then either get ALTTP (GBA rename) or Minish Cap (GBA original)

Minish Cap was really good fun, I played it on an emulator on my phone and only an annoying glitch in the very last level, which apparently no emulators could work round, stopped me from finishing it.

I have Minish Cap from the free 3DS promotion thingy so I think I'll try that next. It's supposed to be one of the shortest Zeldas too so that would help me with my limited time these days.

If you DO play it, make sure you don't play it when it's sunny. Or on a monitor without an easy way to alter the brightness/contrast. The game is in some kind of eye destroying "badger vision". It's like playing a game with the gamma slider all the way to the right.

Update to my list.

Killer is Dead(PS3), Beyond: Two Souls (PS3), Badland Day 2 (iOS), Another World (iOS), Borderlands 2 (PS3) and now Prince of Persia Classic (iOS).

Prince of Persia Classic is almost the antithesis of Another World: It doesn't have classic graphics as well as the FUGLY updated graphics, it feels significantly more ropey than I ever remember the original being, stupid, stupid, stupid requests to "buy" extra lives, Keeps bothering me to "Like" it on iTunes, the buttons are unresponsive, the layout can only be changed along the bottom of the screen (rather than anywhere or in the top half), 2 of the control schemes are unusable (a "Slider Bar"? Seriously?), the combat is terrible, updated large baddies are terrilble, the fight with the skeleton no longer "works" - you can't even push him off the edge, I never managed to push anyone off anything or into anything, the new graphics for the falling blades are GARBAGE.

It's terrible. Another World got me into retro gaming on my phone and PoP has knocked me right back down. Garbage.

PoP Classic on the XBLA was really nice. It had updated graphics akin to the Sands of Time, but the mechanics were pretty much the same as the original.

I've finished The Legend of Zelda: Link between worlds today and it was brilliant!

That brings my total to two games this year so far... Better than anyone could have expected.

Mass Effect 3 done. I quite enjoyed the ending (or the one I picked anyway) and am left wondering what all the fuss was about. I can look into it all now I don't need to worry about spoilers.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons finished and indeed maxed; making it only the second game, after Flower, that I've managed to do that for. The achievements in it were very cool in that working out what to do for each was a puzzle in itself, with the achievement description serving as a hint as to what each one required. In fact the sub-text for each one actually changed from the original hint text to a reference to what you'd actually done once you'd popped it, which I don't think I've ever seen before.

Plenty of games do this, but it's more subtle like 'Kill a dragon' changing to 'killed a dragon'.

I like the idea of it being part of the game though.

Fair enough, I've obviously just never noticed it before. The achievements aren't part of the game in that you can finish it without ever getting a single one of them so they're more like an interesting extra set of optional puzzles. After you finish the game a chapter select feature appears so you don't even need to play the full game through again to get them.

NSMBU is the greatest 2D platformer of my life. The fact it's been ignored because of 'teh graphix R same LOLZ - game muzt B 2' bullshit is tragic.

Got every Star Coin. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it.

Moving on to Rhythm Tengoku Wii (Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise). But might switch to game with narritive...

It looks lovely on the WiiU. I don't know if the WiiU Is doing any upsampling (like the 360 does with DVDs) but original Wii games are once again playable on my fancy TV.

The WiiU is incredible console, and it's being ignored dreamcast style. :(

Episodes 1 of The Wolf Among us done. It was a good idea to give that away for free as, despite being a Fables fan, I don't think I'd have bought it otherwise but now I probably will buy at least episode 2 to see how the story pans out.

A short mod and a single slice of an episodic series? Straw clutching a go go!

Do you say a box set is finished when you've watched a handful of episodes? "Oh well, I'm sure he'll save the day - I don't need to know the details..."

Two in two days! Just finished Legend of Zelda: link between worlds.

Another game criminally underrated. All the fluff and padding from skyward sword has been removed to give a short 20hr power play. Great stuff. And the open dungeon design and tool purchasing system was great. Slightly heartless. The 3D works brilliantly, but the art style is missing something. That said the ending was great and the heart was found.

Ah. Right. Maybe. I just didn't here much about it. Either way. Fucking great.

Do you say a box set is finished when you've watched a handful of episodes? "Oh well, I'm sure he'll save the day - I don't need to know the details..."

Stop being a twat. You twat.

Two in two days! Just finished Legend of Zelda: link between worlds.

Another game criminally underrated. All the fluff and padding from skyward sword has been removed to give a short 20hr power play. Great stuff. And the open dungeon design and tool purchasing system was great.

It's mainly this which puts me off buying it. Removes some of the suspense and exploration from the game, to my mind.

You should buy it anyway as it's brilliant.
