I just went and bought the full version of Escape the Hellevator! from inside the app and sure enough it used my stored balance by default. I'll not moan about that again and will stop shitting up this thread with my boring chat about it all!

Paying to unlock stuff: it fucking annoys the shit out of me, unlocking stuff in games. I spent £40, I want every track and car from the beginning.bastards

Have you ever spent £40 on a mobile game? Assuming not then we are in a very different context here. Most mobile games that follow this model offer a free app which is essentially a demo with a small payment to unlock the full content of the game, which is a completely fair and easy business model. And a shitload easier than the older way of doing it which was to maintain two completely separate versions of your app: a free 'lite' version which was the demo then the separate paid-for full version. That meant maintaining and updating two separate apps in the marketplace and your users having to install a new separate app if they wanted to 'upgrade' to the full version which was a giant fucking pain for everyone.

31. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. It was alright, basically. Incredibly beautiful but so utterly obtuse in places that you can actually miss out a shitload of the game without necessarily even realising until you get to the end. And the mechanic it relies on for piecing together events was quite annoying. Oh, and the landscape is completely empty apart from a very few occasions when there's something you need to find so you never know whether to spend ages investigating every nook and cranny or to just wander in a more relaxed fashion which is an annoyance.

Are we doing The Walking Dead by chapters or episodes for a "game"?

myp whined at me earlier for counting individual chapters of The Wolf Among Us so I'm assuming it's the full game. Which is fair enough really, now that all the chapters for the first season are actually available to be played.

Well, I've done the first three episodes but I'd have to buy the rest.

So far:
  1. Lego Marvel
  2. Sniper Elite: Zombie Nazi Army
  3. Marvel Puzzle Quest
  4. Untrusted
  5. X-COM: Enemy Unknown
  6. The Bard's Tale
  7. The Walking Dead

Bugger, The Walking Dead's pretty good, isn't it?

It's incredibly good at creating tension by giving you dialog choices that you don't want to choose because you know the fallout will be massive but you know it's the right choice and you've only got a certain amount of time to choose one and and and...

Unlike some other games, the choices you make really do effect how the rest of the game will play out. I had to choose one of two people to save early on in the game, and the character was still around and interacting with me hours later (to such an extent that I thought that maybe they cheaped out and forced you to save a certain character no matter who you chose, but a quick glance at a walkthrough suggests that's not the case).

It's really pretty to look at, too.

I played the first three episodes (there are two more, but I'd have to pay for them) so I'm counting this one as done.

So you're really enjoying it but because you'd need to pay for the final two episodes you're going to stop? You're the reason freemium exists!

Because I've played a fair bit of it. I'll go and do the rest soon, I reckon.

Is there not a second series out, as well?

I've no idea, you didn't actually say. And you can hardly blame me for the impression you got when your own selection of words sent the very strong impression that it was the 'paying for it' bit that was the barrier to your continuing.

32. Escape the Hellevator!: a 'room escape' game like millions of others available for iOS/Android but this one's slickly implemented with a pulp-horror aesthetic that adds some charm and, most importantly, the puzzles are generally very logical so if you're after something along these lines this one comes highly recommended.

Understandably not quite as good as 8, but still pretty damn good. A couple of the courses which are mainly underwater are a bit tedious, though.

Yes, the guy who wrote the app version is a different person though.
At the end there's a whole developer commentary about how they never met, and just communicated by email, but the app guy tweaked stuff endlessly to change the gameplay such as how long before certain events happen.

It was fascinating stuff.

33. Asura's Wrath: I thought I'd already posted about this but must have fucked something up. Anyway, my opinion is: a resounding meh. There are points where the sheer sight of really angry guys shouting and, to be fair, spectacularly punching the shit out of stuff is entertaining but the game itself is too repetitive to really grab you and the story's not good enough to make up the rest. I suspect if you really liked that genre of anime you'd love it because then it would be the interactive story it was meant to be, but it didn't do it for me.
34. Unmechanical: a lovely Android conversation of a puzzle/exploration PC game that I believe is also slated for the PS4 at some point soon. Anyway, certainly as a mobile game it was great fun and definitely looked the part due to being an Unreal Engine game. The downside with that latter aspect is it's quite the battery eater so arguably suited better to tablet play due to that and just generally looking better on a bigger screen (though I played the whole thing through on my Once Max and it was still great). The only criticism I've got is that the graphical style sometimes stood in the way of the gameplay, in that often there's was an object you're supposed to actually pick up and use but it was sometimes hard to pick these out from the static environment furniture. Once you realise that though it becomes much harder to get caught out the same way so it's hardly a deal breaker. There's not a massive amount to the game and as a full price PC or console release my opinion might not've been so high but as a mobile game for a few quid it was excellent.

I bothered to do a Google and yeah, some kind of extended version of Unmechanical is coming to the Vita/PS3/PS4 at some point.

38) Little Inferno (iOS). I thought it was a silly distraction game where you burn stuff in a simulated fireplace. How wrong was I? It's only got a Tim Burton-esq storyline and, erm, and burning stuff in a fireplace. Quite how they've managed to combine the two is a stroke of genius though. It's the best iOS game I've played in ages. Not least cause most mobile games are utter shit.

39) Outlast: Whistleblower (PS4). I can't afford Alien: Isolation but if it's half as good as this DLC then it must be pretty facking awesome. Graphically it's the best thing I've played on PS4 so far - not because the graphics are nice, cause they are, but the environmental details are the mutts massive nuts. There's a section enshrouded in fog where you can see about 3 feet in front of you and it's marvellously done. Really amazing. There's a section where a nearby church is on fire and the light of the burning church fire comes flooding through the windows. Really lovely. There's also a section where a basketball court is used as a meat freezer by a guy who wants to turn men into women. Erm, yeah, that was weird.

Actually, the more I played, the closer and closer that it got to being the next-gen equivalent of Manhunt. How fucking cool would that be?

It's scary as fuck as well. There's a great bit in the fog again. You're walking about and someone runs up and smacks you on the back of the head. It happens once and never again. It's absolutely terrifying. I love playing a good horror game every now and again. Not too often but when you're in the mood they can be like no other game, the way they play with your fears and emotions.

40) Dark Souls 2: Ivory King DLC (PS3). It's Dark Souls again. It was really really good. It's definitely up there with some of the best environments made in DS2. All the DLC was fantastic though. I really liked the snow storm in the optional challenge area; actually the snow effects all round was fantastic. Yeah, it was really really good. Top-hole!

I raved about this in various threads, including probably this one, because it was so awesome and you all just ignored me. >:(

I couldn't find it on Android. Were you raving about it on Android at all?

I remembered though, and that's what counts. I've got to be in the mood to play a game on my mobile and I rarely fancy it.

Yeah, I started playing it on the PC then moved over to Android as it seemed like the kind of thing that would be lovely on a touch screen (which it is). This is it here:

Is it maybe not compatible with whatever device you were using to search for it?

If you're logged into Google, it will tell you if it's compatible with any of your Android devices.

EDIT: Also let you buy it and install it on any device you have.

Not from an actual Android device it won't, in that case it'll only even show stuff up that's compatible so I was wondering if that's what was going on.

Oh right, yes, even if you search in Chrome it will take you directly to the Google Play app.

They don't let me name names on this blog, but the person behind the hit I was investigating is dead now.
In fact, I may have killed more people than I actually avenged here.
I didn't get the trigger man. It was the only play I could stomach. Wish I could say it was the right one.
I don't know.
I guess I picked the least shitty of two incredibly shitty sides.
Maybe that doesn't matter. Maybe all that matters is that I now have the ability to kick down doors.
Either way, I need a drink.

In fact, I'm shoving 42. Kentucky Route Zero (PC) on my list cause I've done all 3 acts and I've no intention of going back to the final 2 acts. Not least cause they don't exist. In my mind, I've seen all there is to see and I've finished it. It was disappointingly lovely in few places.
