24. Traps n' Gemstones: a brilliant wee Metroidvania platformer for Android/iOS that comes highly recommended. It's got a really fucking stupid roguelike scoring system which means you quickly learn to ignore all the coins/gems littering the place and the controls are crying out for the ability to resize/move the buttons but you adjust after time so it stop mattering so much. Those moans aside it looks lovely and plays well and is one of the few mobile games that I've started playing again as soon as I got off the train and back home again. Note for Android peeps: the game is much cheaper from the Amazon app store than from Google play for some reason, being 59p vs £2.99. I noticed that the Amazon version is older (v1.0 instead of v1.01) so it looks like it's lagging behind on updates but I don't know if that'll make much difference.
25. The Room: I played this through again the other day.

ETA: I'd somehow fucked up one of the previous posts and missed VVVVV out so I've added that back in.

It took me more than a year of playing it once in a while to finish just the main story line (plus most side quest, but not anywhere near 100% of everything else), so I guess you couldn't say it gripped me as such. The "finale" is brilliant, though. And the way the game continues after that even more so.

26. Devious Dungeons: Android action platformer made by the same guys who did the Random Heroes and League of Heroes series'. As it's a swords 'n' sorcery theme this time round your character has melee attacks only which actually brings quite a lot of strategy to how you approach the difference enemy types (especially as a few of them can fling projectiles which puts you in some very vulnerable positions) and the procedurally created levels keeps things fresh. It's got an odd structure though in that you only get to 'save' every three levels so if you die on, say, level three you'd go back to level one again on restart. You keep any cash/XP you've earned though so you're basically grinding and upgrading as you go. It starts off pretty easy but the last set of levels are a stiff challenge such that you find yourself running for the exit door as soon as you've found the relevant key rather than exploring and looting the entire level as you do when things are easier. Fun stuff with excellent controls and comes recommended, especially if you like their house style.

An improvement over the original in lots of ways, but still a bit of a mess. And until the last level it's basically the same thing repeated over and over for way too many hours.

33. FEZ (PS4) It's good! It's nice! I liked it! Unfortunately, due to my greek heritage, I was unable to join the secret cabal though so I ditched it at 115% complete.

34. OMG ZOMBIES (PS Vita). For the £1 I paid I seem to have got an awful lot of playtime from it. Apparently I got the PSP version though. All 81 levels completed. 52 platinum'ed and the rest gold. Bar two stinking silvers. Stinking silvers.

Anyway is this game well known or not? Apparently it's one of the top ten PSP games or some shit. Basically you have to set off chain reaction of death with a limited number of sniper bullets. So there's fatties that explode taking out other zombies in the area, or cops with guns who fire off a shot when they go down, or an army guy who randomly fires off rounds when he dies. And so on. So basically you need to, say, kill 80 zombies with 3 bullets by setting off a massive chain reaction. I'm not explaining this well. Look at this video or something will ya.

Anyway, it's a pretty fun and silly distraction. Apparently there's a PS VIta specific OMG ZOMBIES HD MEGA REMIX with HD grafix and stuff. It actually looks alright.

I played the HD one for a while. A reasonably fun diversion for a while, but gets stale quickly.

35. Metrico (PS Vita) It takes too long to load, it's not very interesting and it's annoying. Still, I finished it because, well, this thread, but also because it's a bit weird. It's basically a platform puzzler game that uses all the functions of the Vita usually introducing one new thing that the Vita can do to the mix for each of the 6 worlds.

So you might be jumping with X, them your firing with the front touchscreen, then aiming with the rear screen, then tilting platforms, then doing something shit with the camera pointing at red, green and blue objects. Anyway, for some reason, and it's got nothing to do with presentation or the game being interesting, I felt the need to finish the lot. Which I did.

It has no end screen and it turns out that bothering to do the lot was a mistake cause it's got no pay off whatsoever. What a waste of my time. Still, it was a bit weird and different. Someone might like it. IS IT YOU?

No.

1. LA Noire (PC) - story, all DLC cases and some collectibles
2. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (PS3) - 100% & platinum trophy
3. OlliOlli (Vita) - all amateur and pro levels five-starred
4. The Last of Us (PS3) - NG+ and Left Behind DLC
5. The Lego Movie (PS3) - 100% & platinum trophy
6. Brothers: a Tale of Two Sons (PS3) - trophy max
7. Luftrausers (Vita) - level 10, all parts unlocked, blimp destroyed and SFMT mode unlocked
8. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS3) - main mission + all Side and Extra Ops
9. Divekick (Vita) - story mode
10. MotorStorm: Apocalypse (PS3) - Veteran difficulty 100%
11. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) - Gold kart
12. NES Remix (Wii U) - well over 200 stars, unlocked all games

Strange one. Some fun remixed stages from classics such as Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Excite Bike, Zelda, etc, but got a bit stale too soon. Ended up chasing stars to unlock games I wanted to play, and I've played enough iOS puzzlers to know I've had enough of that. Might have been better off buying the best games on the Virtual Console. 6/10

27. Leo's Journey: an incredibly pretty Android/iOS platformer with good controls that suffers from being mostly too easy; only the last few levels present any kind of challenge and even those are blown through with little problem. There are extra 'stars' to be had from finishing each level with zero deaths or within a given time limit but those targets would require rote memorisation and massive grinding of each level so aren't much fun. Also the extra stars are only required for an achievement so there's not a lot of incentive. There are some extra special collectables hidden in certain levels which might go back and hunt for but I might not bother my arse.

EDIT:

Blah blah blah some stuff about Crysis that I've just accidentally deleted weeks later.

I'm sure it was interesting to someone somewhere...

So far:
  1. Lego Marvel
  2. Sniper Elite: Zombie Nazi Army
  3. Marvel Puzzle Quest
  4. Untrusted
  5. X-COM: Enemy Unknown
  6. The Bard's Tale

Half way, fuckers!

The Bard's Tale was pretty fun, in comparison to looking out of the window. I played it on my phone on the way to work, and it was fairly enjoyable, but pretty easy. It was occasionally funny, though.

The Bard was voiced by Westley from The Princess Bride.

Amazing, beautiful, so much fun. Would have been as delighted had been a home console release. Can't wait to play 3D World now.

Obviously it's nice you can approach the levels in slightly different ways but I suspect it might be one of those games where having only a single solution for each level would've allowed much tighter design. Still, excellent stuff and well worth playing.

38) Little Inferno (iOS). I thought it was a silly distraction game where you burn stuff in a simulated fireplace. How wrong was I? It's only got a Tim Burton-esq storyline and, erm, and burning stuff in a fireplace. Quite how they've managed to combine the two is a stroke of genius though. It's the best iOS game I've played in ages. Not least cause most mobile games are utter shit.

39) Outlast: Whistleblower (PS4). I can't afford Alien: Isolation but if it's half as good as this DLC then it must be pretty facking awesome. Graphically it's the best thing I've played on PS4 so far - not because the graphics are nice, cause they are, but the environmental details are the mutts massive nuts. There's a section enshrouded in fog where you can see about 3 feet in front of you and it's marvellously done. Really amazing. There's a section where a nearby church is on fire and the light of the burning church fire comes flooding through the windows. Really lovely. There's also a section where a basketball court is used as a meat freezer by a guy who wants to turn men into women. Erm, yeah, that was weird.

Actually, the more I played, the closer and closer that it got to being the next-gen equivalent of Manhunt. How fucking cool would that be?

It's scary as fuck as well. There's a great bit in the fog again. You're walking about and someone runs up and smacks you on the back of the head. It happens once and never again. It's absolutely terrifying. I love playing a good horror game every now and again. Not too often but when you're in the mood they can be like no other game, the way they play with your fears and emotions.

40) Dark Souls 2: Ivory King DLC (PS3). It's Dark Souls again. It was really really good. It's definitely up there with some of the best environments made in DS2. All the DLC was fantastic though. I really liked the snow storm in the optional challenge area; actually the snow effects all round was fantastic. Yeah, it was really really good. Top-hole!

How long did this take you in the end? I've been off and on with it for a little while but it just ain't interesting enough to stick with for sustained periods of time.

I can't say for sure because using that auto-drop app to force all my Steam cards out has totally fucked the playtime counters but I don't think it took me more than a few hours all in; it's not massively long game. I was really enjoying it though and went through it all in just two play sessions. There's only 19 levels altogether, and a lot of them aren't all that long.

30. Hitman GO on Android. A fantastically presented and very original puzzler that's well worth your time on any platform. I haven't three-starred all the levels and it's very unlikely that I will but the entire system is a brilliant way of adding further challenge after you've actually straight completed each level.

Objection. It's a lazy way of adding replay value to a puzzle game after you've finished it. So many mobile puzzle games do this and it's a complete chore.

I pretty much agree with that. I won't move on until I've got three stars on each level on Hitman:Go, for example.

How else do you expect replay value to be added? In a puzzle game you've got two options: more levels or different challenges on existing levels. More levels takes time and dev effort (and the the developers are actually doing that in the background in this case) so why not add some advanced difficulty for those that want it in the mean time? Also, Hitman GO does go a bit further than most by actually varying the challenges rather than just have the same things to do each time (although 'finish in X number of moves or less' does crop up a lot to be fair). Fuck it though, it's utterly optional and you can just completely ignore it all if you want. If completely optional objectives in a video game don't interest you then don't do them; they can only become a 'chore' if you let them!

Yeah, I guess it's a hangover from when I used to be an achievement completionist. My heart used to always sink when I saw the three-star mechanism in a game I'd just started.

Nuh-uh. You need a certain number of stars to unlock the levels.

Granted it's not many, but still.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. When they arbitrarily make you go back and do the old levels over so you can unlock later ones. I really don't like that at all.

Fair enough, I do disagree with that mechanic entirely (especially when apparently you can pay real money to unlock further levels if you're too shit) so that's a point against it. I never realised that because I must've always had enough card stamps to unlock the next box whenever I finished the previous one.

I've got a few quid built up from doing surveys but I keep forgetting it's there and I'm not entirely sure how to spend it. Ideally it would just automatically take the balance away from whatever you were buying but that doesn't seem to work. I'm running really low on the ridiculous free Amazon app store balance I built up last year so I might need to actually start paying for mobile games again soon! >:(

That's how it seems to work for me, it uses the play balance first.

Edit to add, you have to have the full price in credit though, I don't think you can part pay with play credit and then top up with another method.

Interesting; my current balance is up to £3.44 which should be enough for whatever game I buy next so I'll be curious to see if it works. It's still all very hidden, there doesn't seem to even by a way from the Google Play app to see what your current balance is which is a bit shit.

I just went and bought the full version of Escape the Hellevator! from inside the app and sure enough it used my stored balance by default. I'll not moan about that again and will stop shitting up this thread with my boring chat about it all!

Paying to unlock stuff: it fucking annoys the shit out of me, unlocking stuff in games. I spent £40, I want every track and car from the beginning.bastards

Have you ever spent £40 on a mobile game? Assuming not then we are in a very different context here. Most mobile games that follow this model offer a free app which is essentially a demo with a small payment to unlock the full content of the game, which is a completely fair and easy business model. And a shitload easier than the older way of doing it which was to maintain two completely separate versions of your app: a free 'lite' version which was the demo then the separate paid-for full version. That meant maintaining and updating two separate apps in the marketplace and your users having to install a new separate app if they wanted to 'upgrade' to the full version which was a giant fucking pain for everyone.

31. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. It was alright, basically. Incredibly beautiful but so utterly obtuse in places that you can actually miss out a shitload of the game without necessarily even realising until you get to the end. And the mechanic it relies on for piecing together events was quite annoying. Oh, and the landscape is completely empty apart from a very few occasions when there's something you need to find so you never know whether to spend ages investigating every nook and cranny or to just wander in a more relaxed fashion which is an annoyance.

Are we doing The Walking Dead by chapters or episodes for a "game"?

myp whined at me earlier for counting individual chapters of The Wolf Among Us so I'm assuming it's the full game. Which is fair enough really, now that all the chapters for the first season are actually available to be played.

So far:
  1. Lego Marvel
  2. Sniper Elite: Zombie Nazi Army
  3. Marvel Puzzle Quest
  4. Untrusted
  5. X-COM: Enemy Unknown
  6. The Bard's Tale
  7. The Walking Dead

Bugger, The Walking Dead's pretty good, isn't it?

It's incredibly good at creating tension by giving you dialog choices that you don't want to choose because you know the fallout will be massive but you know it's the right choice and you've only got a certain amount of time to choose one and and and...

Unlike some other games, the choices you make really do effect how the rest of the game will play out. I had to choose one of two people to save early on in the game, and the character was still around and interacting with me hours later (to such an extent that I thought that maybe they cheaped out and forced you to save a certain character no matter who you chose, but a quick glance at a walkthrough suggests that's not the case).

It's really pretty to look at, too.

I played the first three episodes (there are two more, but I'd have to pay for them) so I'm counting this one as done.

So you're really enjoying it but because you'd need to pay for the final two episodes you're going to stop? You're the reason freemium exists!

Because I've played a fair bit of it. I'll go and do the rest soon, I reckon.

Is there not a second series out, as well?

I've no idea, you didn't actually say. And you can hardly blame me for the impression you got when your own selection of words sent the very strong impression that it was the 'paying for it' bit that was the barrier to your continuing.
