39. Flyhunter Origins: An Android/iOS platformer who's USP is the alleged involvement of animators who work, or did work, at Pixar. And the character animation during the cutscenes is indeed very good, but the rest of the game's pretty shite. Incredibly repetitive and boring level design throughout with some weird and annoying 'chase' levels chucked in as sort-of boss battles. A deeply flawed currency system (you can collect enough to unlock all the shitty weapon upgrades within the first few levels leaving you literally no reason to bother collecting anything after that) and pretty poor graphics are the final nails in it's coffin.

47. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (PS4). Are you having a laugh? Are you having a fucking laugh? Double boost jumps, hook grapple, laser guns, mech-suits AND YOU FUCKERS CHURN OUT THE SAME OLD SHIT? How did you manage it? Not only have you managed to produce the same old turkey shoot for the eleventh time? Unbelievable. If this what passes for the next-gen then you might as well shove it up your arsehole cause I'm sick of it. It could have been so much better and how? Double boost jumps, hook grapple, laser gun and, mech-suits YOU DAFT SHITS. It could have edged more towards Halo and made the campaign more open and fun. It's strange because about 9/tenths through and you notice a small difference in the enemy hierarchy: grunt (couple of bullets till dead), helmet grunt (more bullets, gov?) and mech (three grenades please). There's the making of an interesting selection of enemies to shove together to create some, fuck I don't know, some emergent gameplay. Oh, you want to have the grunts shuffle around like zombies and the mechs to endlessly march towards you? Fuck you dickheads.

That's not to say that it's terrible but, really, it is. It's horrible crap.

You want to make it better? How about some vehicle crap? Jet ski, car and a mind numbingly stupid plane ride. The latter plays like afterburner but just in the canyons bit, and, even on hard (which I finished it on, fact fans), whether you shoot anything at all is inconsequential. Stuff just blows itself up in front of you. You won't care. You won't care about Kevin Spacey. You won't care about the same gruff black guy or the bearded white guys. The only thing that'll keep you guessing in this mess of a story is whether that's Jason Statham's voice or not. I still don't know if it was and I didn't stick around when the credits started to find out. He could have been the first name but I couldn't give two fucks to find out as my thumb was stabbing X. The only - the only - thing that can be said for the game is the lack of multiple main characters. You play one guy, so I suppose the story makes more sense than usual.

But what about the set pieces I hear the voice inside my head screaming? NO ONE GIVES A FUCK. Stuff blows up, shiny stuff blows up, there's some gadgets that are used in front of you.

Oh, my fingers hurt tapping this out on a phone. Let's just say this: I don't like it. I don't like it at all. The makers have learnt nothing about how to do a good campaign (or forgot why MW was so special). This crap can go to hell.

I like multiplayer though. Tis gud ya?

48. Dragons Crown (PS Vita). Remember the guy who made the original Dungeons and Dragons beat-em-up? Me neither. But after umpteen years HE'S BACK! No one? Ok. So what's he gone and done this time the voice in my head says (what's that guy's problem)? Well, he's only gone and made a Dungeons and Dragons beat-em-up! A-MAZE. I can imagine him sitting in his little tiny japanese chair stroking his bonsai tree racking his brains for years wondering what sort of game he should make to follow up his Dungeons and Dragons beat-em-up.

And who cares! Because I love this.

Here's what you do. Press X to start and then hammer the square button for 9 hours in the most sumptuous hand drawn drawings of drawings. It's all a bit pubescent boy with giant tits on both men and women alike but it won't matter much when you're bashing lizard men, Knights, sorcerers and a killer bunny rabbit. The latter of which is a boss. Turn off brain. Smashy smashy smashy. I liked it. 8/10.

It was free on PS+ ages ago. You've probably missed it, chump.

So far:
  1. Lego Marvel
  2. Sniper Elite: Zombie Nazi Army
  3. Marvel Puzzle Quest
  4. Untrusted
  5. X-COM: Enemy Unknown
  6. The Bard's Tale
  7. The Walking Dead
  8. Alien: Isolation

Took a bit of a break from this when my Technohat and Elite turned up, picked it up again yesterday and completed it just now (in fact, the credits are running on my other monitor as I write this).

It was superb. Absolutely superb, and the best Alien video game by some distance. I'm sad it's finished.

The little audio clips you get when you find the logs of the Nostromo are brilliant, (especially that one).

Going to check out the DLC now.

Also, Ian Holm was credited as the likeness for Ash, so they must have got him in, but the voice work was done by someone else. That's a bit odd, isn't it?

Either he would have cost too much money or he wasn't available.

I'll give it a solid 7 as it entertained me without bowling me over. So much stuff happens without you having any control it may as well be a theme park ride at this point though. It probably helped I hadn't played one in five years.

Finished this a couple of years ago on the 360, but playing MV gave me a hankering to revisit it. If you like pixel art, haunting music, platforming, puzzles and some light cryptography you can't go much wrong. Will probably leave a while until I give NG+ a go for the 200+%.

Obviously looks loads better in full 1080p too.

Well, if you're a member of the one a week team, I don't think it's going so well.

49. Never Alone (PS4) is getting some rave reviews ain't it? It's a basic platformer that's supposed to tug on the heartstrings. Little Esikimo girl and her trusty cute fox do a very simple story that was apparently told by some old guy to the peeps who made this game and inspired them to make it. The game. It's cute if basic and the basics are basically a little clumsy. Some finicky jumps or smudged uncomfortable platforming bits here and there. It's a tiny (tiny) bit ropey in places - structurally speaking - and beyond some nice effects here and there it could easily have been made on previous gen stuff so you won't get your next gen kicks here, no sir. But that's not to say that it's not good, this is: it's not good. It's ok. It reminds me of Brothers: A tale of a Couple of Brothers insofar as it's a cutesy story but there's no gut wrenching here ending here. That's at the start of the third act instead.

But I'm here to help you decide whether you want to buy this with money you've earned. THEN THIS SIMPLE QUESTION WILL PROVIDE A DECISION ON YOUR BEHALF.

All you need to ask yourself is this: Did you enjoy Brothers: A Tale of A Brother and his Brother?

If the answer is yes, then don't bother with this as you've played the superior game.

If the answer is no, then don't bother cause you won't enjoy this either.

And to think I got this instead of Geo Wars 3 cause the usual suspects are already ruining it with ludicrously unbeatable scores. Shitheads.

9. Divekick (Vita) - story mode
10. MotorStorm: Apocalypse (PS3) - Veteran difficulty 100%
11. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) - Gold kart
12. NES Remix (Wii U) - well over 200 stars, unlocked all games
13. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) - rescued Princess Peach with 104 stars.
14. Mario Kart 7 (3DS) - gold trophies for all 50cc, 100cc & 150cc grands prix
15. Monument Valley (iOS) - finished all ten chapters
16. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (PS4) - campaign finished on Normal
17. Monument Valley: Forgotten Shores (iOS) - finished all eight chapters + Ida's Red Dream
18. Fez (PS4) - completed to 103.1%
19. Resogun (PS4) - end credits on Rookie
20. P.T. (PS4) - end credits
21. Thomas Was Alone (PS3/PS4/Vita) - completed the story

Not sure how it managed to get me emotionally invested in a set of rectangles, but managed it. Beautiful score, solid puzzles, and fun narration. Occasional frustrating platforming is the only blot on its copybook.

Also great Sony cross-buy and cross-save support - I finished this across three different platforms!

Well, that was pretty fucking harrowing.

It puts a lot of other games into perspective. If you've not heard of it, you basically play a group of people caught up in a war - they're not soldiers, just everyday people (I had a TV chef, a footballer and a music student, among others). You have to keep them alive, and it's fucking difficult to start with.

More than worth a go, if just to find out if you'd beat the old couple to death for the chance to get some bandages.

I have missed Resogun from my list? I've completed that to the end on experienced.

I've got the final boss to ravage on Soul Sacrifice too, which is (temporarily) given up on. So close.

52. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4). Facking hell, I missed this one off the list. I totally collected everything that I could be arsed collecting and did all the mishs.

And that's 52.

I'm probably going to end at 16, given the only game I'm currently playing is Lords of the Fallen, which I'm finding quite hateful and can't see myself wanting to finish (the issues are many, but I don't think anyone would be particularly interested in a long rant about it).

Ok....

Reasons Lords of the fallen is not too great:
1) Technically it's arse. I can only talk about the pc version, but framerates <20 are less rare than one might hope. And you rather need v-sync off to get anything out of it which turns it into a horrible tearing nightmare. And don't use the gauntlet unless you value framerates somehere < 1fps.
2) Thing Dark souls never does: Makes your character invisible. Knowing the current state and position of your character is rather important. Am I on the floor? Can I dodge out of the way, or get a shield ready? Etc etc.Guess what? Yeah, get too close to a wall and your character is handily rendered invisible. Usually the case because an enemy has knocked you into the wall and you're possibly on the floor. Who knows? Not me.
3) Controls. May not be an issue if you're not used to the DS control scheme, but having different, undefinable controls is not great. (No, I didn't mean to change magic spells, I meant to roll, thanks) amera is rather hopeless even beyond it's ability to dematerialise you.
4) Active equipment inventory being done on a cyclic basis. DS had a whole load of different toggles (left hand, right hand, both hands) meaning you can quickly get to the configuration you need. This it's all done on one button. And the feedback as to what you're currently holding is... not great (particularly when invisible) The item and spells weren't quite as simple, but did give you fairly clear graphics. Again, not the case here. (And not only are the graphics indistinct, the choice of having the use spell button being the same as switch spell is an... interesting design choice. (Would be the same for items, but I only ever have the health potions equipped anyway)
5) On the subject of feedback, the lock on indicator is tiny and out of the way. Not great.
6) Depth of combat options is slightly lacking. For ranged combat, you get 4 rather pants spells and a magic gauntlet. That's it. the weapons you can get are a small array of different weapon types.
7) Crafting system. For ages it bugged out and didn't work. Even when it does it's somewhat limited in scope.
8) The shield enemies. Seemingly the only way to reliably kill them is to Benny into them repeatedly. Ridiculous. And the non Bennyable enemies are hateful. (Particularly the ones who are bosses who summon more enemies. Which was not great in DS2, and it remains so here)
9) Indeed in general, the enemies period of vulnerability is often swingingly small. If he's taken a huge lunge at me, I don't expect him to be able to get the shield up/jump out of the way before I can counter. If he's charged head first into a wall, he shouldn't be able to turn round ready to attack with nary an animation.
10) Oh and it's inconsistent. Benny into an enemy once and you'll knock him back. Another time and he'll just ignore yo and then smack you. No obvious reason for the difference. Same for damage from the gauntlet of ultimate slowness Whether it does damage or not appears random, Or whether lock on actually locks on (See: rubbish lock indicator) In DS I rarely felt damage I got was anything other than my mistake. Not so here.
11) Distinct lack of tension. Staying alive isn't exactly important, and for the most part it's easy but tedious.
12) That despite having a 'proper' tutorial, it's considerably less clear than DS. (The lack of player hints really shows up here).
13) Which really shows up with the tough enemies that can only be killed once you've picked up something in an anonymous jar elsewhere in the level. I had to look that up. It was either that or I would've stopped playing at that point. Seriously, you spend minutes killing the bugger and after you exhaust ypur health, he punches the floor and returns to life. The only hint you have is a red ribbon which charges off into a wall.
14) Generic levels. Again with the dark sould comparison, everywhere there had a unique feeling, and once you'd reentered an area via a shortcut or whatever, you immediately knew you had and recognised the area. And it was easy to generate a map in your head as everywhere was rather distinct. Not the case here. You go somewhere and you may possibly have been there before, but it's hard to know as it all looks the bloody same.
15) Also - generic, bland plot.
16) Also also - the game isn't long. Although you might argue that's a blessing.
17) Not strictly game related, but if you announce a patch in the next few days, hold yourself to that. 15 days later... Still nothing.

So yeah, I don't much like it. Other people do, but I've seen very little bumming of it.

Stupid, hilarious, brilliant, occasionally frustrating. This is the gaming equivalent of a Laurel and Hardy short.

Picked this up a while ago when it was free, and am now kicking myself for waiting so long to play it. - it's brilliant. Still have two bonus chapters to play too!

I've now officially done better than last year with two weeks still to go.

53. Alien: Isolation (PS4) Stalker alien was brill. Killer robots were brill. Endless engineering tasks were so mind numbingly dull that any enjoyment I had was instantly tainted by this repetitive tedium. I'd love someone to count how many levers, locks and mini games are needed to complete the game. Come on Internet, show us what you've got.
