41. Papo & Yo: An engaging enough wee thing and I'm glad I played it, but it gets a bit repetitive and the aesthetic that carried it so far in the demo feels stretched out somewhat over the course of the full game. Also it's not at all challenging. Also the central motif (game as therapy for game developer working through his issues with his alcoholic father) doesn't really get touched until the very end where it's all raced through in a very heavy-handed way. But! Still a fun game if you're looking for something short, interesting and relaxing. Which I was.

You can tell I'm not working right now, can't you?

The very end dragged on a little, but otherwise this was pretty enjoyable stuff. I'm in no rush to go back to it, though.

Can you tell I'm going through my iOS library desperately trying to scramble a few more games? I bought this YEARS ago and barely touched it. It's very good. Draw the path your car takes and watch it drive while giving yourself the odd nitro boost. Made by the same developer as Trials.

25. Antichamber (PC) I'll be honest, whereas I was initially enjoying it, my interest fell off a cliff after 2 hours. I was progressing, progressing, doing it, doing it, enjoying it and then I didn't know where I was going or why and I suddenly thought that I'm actually not enjoying it at all. The main reason being is that there's no narrative at all besides some "clues" on the walls and I'm not that interested in solving puzzles for the sake of it. It's too much like work. I thought I might have missed a trick about how great it was and so I read a few reviews and, boy, was everyone enjoying it loads.

So, to summarise, I'm probably wrong but I don't think it's that smart or that clever and I probably don't particularly like puzzle games much which is why I wasn't getting much out of playing it. I got properly stuck about once and had to resort to a walkthrough (most, if not all, are walkthroughs on this games are useless, given the abstract nature of the game and non-linear pathways through the game) just to find the right path to take to the next bit. Then I got moderately stuck and could probably have figured it out with a bit of time but the patience was drained and I used the walkthrough again. And then twice more. I did feel like a cheat, but I just wanted it to end by then.

That being said, like everyone on the planet, I fucking loved the Portal games so maybe if they had a narrative it'd have been much more interesting and worthwhile in my brain.

So Antichamber: If you like to solve puzzles, you might like to solve these puzzles.

I'm going on memory here but isn't that mostly what the EG review said about it as well? That it's very clever and well done but lacking a central conceit to tie it together and make it more of a coherent experience rather than just, as you say, a bunch of disparate puzzles? I'm expecting to enjoy it in part but to not really 'get' the whole thing due to a combination of the game being too obtuse and me being too stupid.

Let's see how I did against my prediction:

Did I enjoy it in part? Yep, for a short while anyway.
Did I 'get' it? Nope.
Was that due to a combination of the game being too obtuse and me being too stupid? Oh God yes.

Excellent, I was entirely correct. Antichamber: it's sort of fun for a short amount of time, and certainly has a nice aesthetic, but works much harder at poncing around being an 'experience' than it does at being a fun game. Not very recommended.

Use a walkthrough. The trippy infinite loop end level is worth seeing just because you could imagine it in a better game.

I'm usually more than happy to lean on a walkthrough but just couldn't be arsed this time around. I did try with a couple of the more advanced puzzles, but I even got bored trying to follow what some YouTube guy was showing me and my attention wandered to the point I knew I was never going to care enough. Weirdly I think it's the kind of thing I might enjoy watching a Let's Play of later on down the line as I'm sure it has some pretty surprises, but right now I'm just not bothered. Which is a shame in a way because there's a kernel of a game in there that I would adore, but something about the way it's been presented/designed is just putting me off massively.

Relatedly: the black and white aesthetic of it reminded me massively of 'The Unfinished Swan'. Which is the zenith of "beautiful and acclaimed indie game without the depth to carry it past it's single idea" but if you haven't played it you really should as it's awesome. Well, some of it's awesome and some of it's alright; but it's absolutely worth the price of entry on an aesthetic basis alone.

Yeah, I moaned about it here: viewtopic.php?style=19&f=3&t=9039&p=714217&hilit=Unfinished+swan#p714217

Too twee for my liking. If they'd do a sequel, set it in a dungeon and fire black blobs until a giant phalus is revealed implailing a guy in the head then, erm, that'd be cool maybe or something?

On the upside, your link there reminded me of how annoying creepypornangel was; so that's nice (that he's not here any more).

43. Journey: Obviously I played this when it first came out but I played through it again last week. I was slightly surprised to come across other players as I assumed no one else would be playing it by now.

53. Gears of War: Judgement (360). I suppose the purpose of the 52 challenge was to clear the backlog but I kept playing new games. Still, this brought me back to that central conceit.

Finished. It was ... more Gears. But broken down to levels. Some of those levels were just hoard maps. Yup, the game actually tells you 45 seconds to next round whilst you wait and set up the defences.

I was a bit bored. It was occassionally half arsed fun and not terrible, but, I dunno, I just couldn't be bothered with it. Ah well.

Fuck sake! Three quarters of the way through God of War: Ascension and it crashed out corrupting my save game so now the game just freezes whenever I try to load it up. I was really looking forward to adding this one to my list as it would've represented finishing this year and the previous generation off properly at the same time but, although I was enjoying it and not struggling with it so would've definitely finished it otherwise, I can't be arsed played that first seven hours worth of game through again. Still, it does mean I should probably buy a PS4 tomorrow or something.

55. Sword & Scorcery EP (iOS). Graphically, this is pixel art done right. It's lovely in an Another World or Flashback kinda stylee. Musically it's lush. With the headphones on there were some cracking toons pumping out. The sound effects suited the pixel art and had some nice plinky plonky noises and 8-bit style effects; like the 8-Bit waterfall noise. All fzzzzzzzzzttt.

Same the story was largely bland nonsense. It's light hearted and well written (in its own way) but the main thrust of the story left me a bit cold.

Worse still it's broken to a point on my iPhone 5S. There's a bit when you change the moon cycle. You sit on a chair and wait for the moon to change and get up. Simples. But I can't get up on the dark moon cycle so I can't do the dark moon bit. The game then gives you a hint that you have to change the time in the app settings as an alternative!? The fuck. But the app settings are empty so I'm altering the phone date and time to move the time along. 12 o'clock, 1 o'clock, 2 o'clock. It's not fucking working. I've played it for about 2 hours I guess now so I have to resort to a walkthrough. Seems I was right: sit in the chair or change the time. The walkthrough did suggest when I'd know I'd got it as the screen would go dark blue. So I leave it at 12 midnight and change the dates... tomorrow, the day after, the day after that. 9 days later and it finally works. What a load of random, stupid tedious bullshit. There's no need for it whatsoever. What-so-ever. Up until this point it was plain sailing and, in fact, really easy. Then this!? The difficulty curve just went through the roof. This obtuse puzzle out the way I crack on and I've no problems whatsoever again. Finish the dark moon and reset my clock. Tedious fuckers. Then I come across one more puzzle: I'm in the right place holding everything that I need pressing the screen but, after, like, 3 hours playing and never doing this before I'm expected to shake the iPhone. Not once have I done it. Not once did it tell me to do it. No clue, no where. Yeah, I went back to the guide. Fuckers.

Then I rattled through and finished it. I fucking hate these obtuse puzzles. Just because you've got a phone with multiple functions doesn't mean that I have to shake, rattle and roll the fucker for every game. You want me to do something I haven't done before THEN GIVE ME A FUCKING HINT. It's all to happy to tell me to turn the screen to fight so why not a clue to shake the screen violently for THAT ONE TIME IN THE ENTIRE GAME.

Really spoiled it for me them two bits.

I couldn't care less about the ending, the music or anything else after that.

Apparently the same people are doing a game for the XBONE though with the same art style. Should be really nice if they sort themselves the fuck out.

That game has indeed lovely visuals and music (which i listen to every now and then), but the gameplay is just nonsense. I couldn't be bothered to finish it.

Looks like Trials Fusion slipped out of the list at some point - I've just readded it. I think I'm done now. Nothing else I'm playing has the end in sight and I've ticked off all the quick wins I can think of. Still pretty pleased with 32 though - 9 more than last year. I could probably do with spreading them out throughout the year though - I managed to complete a whopping 18 games in Nov/Dec, but nothing from June to September.

Completions by format:

PS4 - 8
iOS - 8
PS3 - 6
Vita - 3
Wii U - 3
PC - 2
3DS - 2

Bring on 2015!

Did you not play 'a dark room' or '80 days' on iOS? You should have done.

80 Days is on my wishlist. I'd not heard of A Dark Room but it looks intriguing...

Didn't they fix that and add the original japanese? That might have been the update/sequel thing though.

Also, I started Watch Dogs which was the biggest pile of shit and I jacked it in. I've no intentions of ever going back to that steaming turd.

Every time i see watch dogs get mentioned it's always negatively. I went on to check its metascore.

Eighty? Ok, gaming journalism is still as good as i remembered.

Actually it's about ethics.

As far as I'm aware, (and a brief look hasn't shown anything different) the original japanese was available as a pre-order bonus, but never released outside of that in Europe.

Which is a shame, as I rather liked the (japanese) demo. But the combination of a rather terrible load of voice acting (and not terrible in the entertainingly terrible sense ala Castlevania SOTN) and having played it without said shite rather made it hard to continue.

What a charming little mobile game. You play Fogg's valet and accompany him on his trip around the world. You need to chose where to go, find secret routes, control the luggage and finances, and clip Fogg's moustache.

It's wonderful, and you can get around the world in a hour or so ("That's way less than 80 days" - no-one funny) once you get the hang of it - there's plenty of replay value with all the different routes, too.

Now - who's going to beat my 47 days?

I really enjoyed this thread this year. It's nice to mark the completed games, and it showed me how much I play iOS games compared to other systems now.

Yep, it's given me a sense of achievement I've missed since giving up on literal achievements.

I traded this thread for writing a Steam Review every time i finish a game, or every time i abandon a game because it wasn't good enough. this last one is a good ideia for a "Abandon 52 challenge 2015".

Last game that did it for me was Jazzpunk because it made me literally sick. That game gave me vertigo and motion sickness.

Finished in 2014
---------------------

Jan
1. COD: Ghosts [WIIU]. - Meh.
2. Don't look back [IOS: iPhone] - Ace.
Feb
3. New Super Mario Bros U [WIIU] - Incredible. Best 2D platformer I've ever played.
4. The Legend of Zelda: link between worlds[3DS] - all killer no filler Zelda. Cut to the prime.
5. VVVVVV [3DS] - one simple mechanic fully explored in 3hrs. Beautiful music, imagery and even story. Love it.
6. Attack of the Friday Monsters [3DS] - slight. Empty. But gibli childhood simulator.
Mar
7. The Last Of Us [PS3] - still recovering from the ending. So bloody good. HBO: The Game.
8. The Last of Us: Left Behind [PS3] - more of the same. Which is pretty much the greatest compliment possible.
9. Magic The Gathering 2014 [iOS: iPad] - lumbered with the most inelegant control scheme (which is a legacy of it's XBLA days) means it loses all of the tactial magic (hoho!) that should be present in a tablet version. Real shame.
10. Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations [DS] - It really shouldn't work - but it really does. Primarily because you care so much for the characters.
Apr
11. Guacamelee [vita - PS+] a fun so called metroidvania although it's far too linear to really be one. Wonderfully designed combat is the draw. Chaffless.
12. Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed [vita - PS+] despite being from Sumo I dismissed this game. Boy was I wrong. It's wonderful. Beautiful drifting. Not sure it would have grabbed me as much on the big screen though. Perfect for portable.
13. Luftrausers [vita] a perfect amount of scope.
14. Hotline Miami [PS3 & vita] the controls are a learning curve, but it comes alive on the vita thanks to tap targeting.

Added 13 & 14

Hmm, forgot to update this. What did I complete that isn't on here?
(In no particular order)

15.PT - Possible game of the year. [PS4]
16 Shovel Knight - Likely Game of the Year. [3DS]
17. Fez [PS3/Vita]
18. Proteus [Mac]
19. Megaman 2[3DS]
20. Super Mario World - Got to the first credits at least. Critically acclaimed and still underrated. [WiiU]
21. Spec Ops: The Line [PS3]
22. Hyrule Warriors [WiiU]

And some others on the 3DS at least, that I can;t remember now. Should be working, I'll edit the rest of this later. Maybe.
